UP - UPDATE!!! Did a little more diagnostic. I decided that before I fire up the engine I would prime the engine since it hadn't run in God knows how long. I tried to turn the engine a few revolutions by hand using the crank pulley bolt and a breaker bar. The engine won't budge at all. Frozen. I'm thinkin' I'ma gonna have to throw in a new engine. I'll check the timing belts to see if one is broke and jammed up in the... oops, wrong year, that would be singular. Belt. Also, the radiator fans keep cycling on and off in stand by mode. Anyone got any clues?

I solved the key problem. I pulled the lock assy from the tailgate and took it over to the local locksmith, and got three keys made for $29. Progress so far: Front passenger speaker not working. Of coarse the stereo is the first thing I try. Car won't start... the starter is either out or just frozen. will take a hammer to it and give it a few good taps to see if it will budge it loose. My other battery might be low on juice so I will try and jump it.

"Red" is in my drive-way. Cost so far : $300 for car. $60 for tow to house. Who knows how much the expired tags and reg is gonna cost. But I'm into it now. It's driving me nuts. Dude never could find the key so I can't crank it yet to find out just what I'm dealing with. This morning I pulled the lock out of the tailgate to take it to a locksmith. Last night I put the battery from Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag-with-a-blow-headgasket, into "Red". At least I know the dome lights and door locks work .

One time, in band camp.... The year - 1991. At the time my ride was a 1979 Honda Accord hatch, a cute little FWD car purchased in a time of my life before I discovered the joy of 4WD, and band equipment hauling mojo of a Subaru. My college band "Outta Hand" used to practice in the art building at Fresno State (my drummer was palsey walsey with the dean of the art dept... kiss rump roast). We would smuggle beer and other "musician assistents" into the room where we practiced. Well I never smoke while I play because it makes me play crappy, and I didn't drink that night, though I can't be sure of that . We ended practice around 10:30 pm and load the band stuff in our cars. I was the last to leave. To leave the school parking lot you had to make a turn around an island to get to the exit. Well, they had recently rebuilt and widened the island and, while the concrete was set, they hadn't filled in the island yet. So I make the turn around the thing like I normaly do, but I guess that wasn't good enough or wide enough because the next thing I know I jump the island curb and ended up getting stuck, much like in cartoons where the car ends up balancing on the edge of a cliff. It had rained that week, the center of the island was a mud pit, and the front end of my car was stuck in the mud like a diving hippo. Since the car was front wheel drive, there was no hope of getting any tracktion and pulling myself out. Needless to say, the tow truck driver had a great laugh that night. PS. Exhaust systems have always been my achillies heel. The week before, I had, for the first time EVER, completely sealed the exhaust system after replacing the head gasket. No leaks at all. It was purring like a kitten. It figures I would completely trash it within a weeks time.

T-wagon Stranded Me!!!!!!! Argggggghhhh!!!!
Sonicfrog replied to 86ruguy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What year is the T-Wag? It's probably the head gasket, but there is a little cooling hose under the turbo that could be leaking. This happened to me once. The water was leaking onto the downpipe or the block and boiling away so I never saw it drip to the ground. -
What Firstwagon said. This spring (no pun intended... really) I had to replace my air suspension on Murphy, the $500 87 GL-10 Turbo Wagon. The front driver side air strut would deflate over night, and the wagon always sagged if parked for any lenth of time. It looked like it had a hang-over in the mornings. One day while driving the car, the suspension just stopped inflating. Not a comfortible ride! Personaly, I suggest getting new assembly or using new struts and building the assembly with used spring (what I did) vs just getting the whole assembly from the J-Yard and installing as is. Chances are, the used struts are toast. It will be more work, but you will be happier with the results using new struts.

Should I re-mill the heads...
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got the engine too hot going up a long, steep hill in southern Cal called the Grapevine(stupid me, I just had to push it even though I knew better). After I replaced the gaskets this spring, I had some heat transfer problems as the rad I was using was old and had some clogged passages. I replaced it with a newer rad from a junk yard. It had better flow, but was only a single core. And I think the gasket may have been leaking a wee bit before it blew. -
Tomorrow I start taking Murphy appart to change the head gaskets. I just had the heads milled five-ish months ago the last time I had to change the heads. Should it be done again? Also, what do you guys recommend to clean metal surfaces to prepair for gaskets? Sometime this week I will be picking up the 94 Alpine Sport wagon, that will probably be known heretofore as "Red", since the outside is... well.... Red!

Ooops I Did It Again (head gasket)!!! UPDATE
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nope. I couldn't be that lucky It's definitely the head gasket. -
Mucho Grasias!

WOW! Great story. Here in Fresno there is a guy who is trying to sell 3 Brats. He is asking way way way too much for them, given their condition. I ended up finding a 94 Legacy wagon for $200 I will be picking up next week. So, between fixing Murphy's head gasket woes, and getting "Red" (the new Leggy is red) up and running (have not a clue what's wrong) I have no time to adopt a Brat. If anyone is interested in the brats though, they are listed on Craigstlist in Fresno. PS. I will be getting rid of my old EA82t and tranny on Craigslist soon.

Ooops I Did It Again (head gasket)!!! UPDATE

bump again (for the last time) -
I am a regular on the Old Gen list, and thought I'd drop by, since I may become a regular here too. I may have found the steal of the century... well, for me anyway. While at the Yard today looking for a 5 speed D/R tranny (found none) I ran into a guy who wants to get rid of a Subaru. It is a 94 Mi (?) wagon, not running, 152 k miles. for $200. He thinks its the clutch (its a 5 spd:) ). I went and looked at it and, except for the eight months of dust accumulated on the body, it looks very good. Interior is very clean and in very good shape. He couldn't find the key, which probably doesn't matter since the battery is D E D dead, so it probably wouldn't start anyway. So before I decide to buy said beast, I would like someones help and run the vin on car fax for any needed info. Here is the VIN: 4S3 BJ6336 R6957256 Thanks in advance for the help. PS. Dude is leaving town for a week so I will have time to think this through. PPS. What mods do people do with these 94's. Engine Swap? Tranny?

Ooops I Did It Again (head gasket)!!! UPDATE
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I only paid twelve buck for rad one I have now. The J-Yard was having a 1/2 off sale, and I couldn't resist. I will get one soon. The 5 speed tranny will help too. As will the soon approaching winter. -
Did they use them on the GL 10's, or just the RX???

Silver Lining Of Blowing Head Gasket!
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm in the process (long process) of changing careers and just sold my business, so I have a bit of extra $$$$ / time to spend. OK. I'm done rubbing it in . But I have to be careful to make the little windfall last till I get paid for my next job that I don't have yet! -
