  1. Progress Report. DAY 1 - Got the heads off and the crappy 3 speed auto tranny out of the cavity. Also had to remove both 23 spline half shafts to replace with 25 spliners. I started at about 10:00 AM and stopped around 7. Took a few breaks, did lunch, and waisted some time looking for misplaced ratchet or sockets. All in all - a very productive day. DAY 2 - The day in a nutshell. The ultimate goal - to at least get the new tranny mounted. I had some extra jobs to do today (you know the equation, work = money = more Subie parts; this is like an adiction), so I started early, 7 AM'ish. I pulled the shift lever for the automatic, then went to work for a couple of hours. During the day I went to pick up the 25 sline halfshafts. Got home and found one of the new halfshafts was a 23 spliner. Crap! That means another trip to the store. I ended up doing a lot more running around than I wanted, waisting sevaral hours. I got the crappy 3 speed auto tranny out from underneath the car. Man - that thing is heavy! I forgot to secure the torque converter, so of coarse it came off and spilled tranny fluid everywhere. Funny thing is that when I was installing it a year and a half ago, I did the same thing. At the end of the day, I got the Full Time 4 Wheel Drive tranny up into the tranny bay, plus I also cleaned the cylinder heads and prepped them for install. I couldn't get the one halfshaft to slide onto the differential stub. I fear I have the wrong one. Will try again tomorrow. I think, if I get the halfshaft issues resolved, I will tomorrow have brought Murphy back to life.
  2. What do you guys use to clean and prep the heads... i.e. solutions, techniques, etc. etc.
  3. I've got a pic of my wagon with all my band equipment in it. I'll post it if I can find it.
  4. Many of us have a problem with overheating. You will have a "problem" wil over-cooling .
  5. On the FT4WD 5 speed, is the center differential normaly in the "unlocked" position? I will be installing the tranny today but I'm not sure if I will be able to connect the circiut for the vacuum actuator. Would the car be safe to drive temporarily until I get that hooked up??? PS. Does anyone know if some of the wiring from the auto shifter can be use for that circuit?
  6. Today, Mon. Oct 2, is tranny swap / head gasket day! I will take some pics and maybe video and post it when I'm done. I still need to pick up 25 spline DOJ's or half shafts, whichever is easier to get.
  7. The first series of Lexus's were recalled for a simillar malfunction soon after its introduction in 1989. The center bake light housing would melt if the brakes were appied for any length of time. I took note of the recall because Lexus issues the recall voluntarily, while Chrysler and GM were in the news for resisting to recall some models for a more serious problem. I thought it was great public relations on Lexus's part and stupid for the Big Two to allow the bad publicity, and both companies were forced to issue the recall anyway.
  8. Never listen to me 'cause apparently have no clue what I'm doing! Went back to the same car today and the Turbo is sitting right where it always is. For some reason I was thinking the oil line sits right on the turbo itself, not in front of it, so when I looked at it, my mind said the turbo is not there. Maybe I've been doing too much of this :drunk: lately!!!
  9. Pulled a FT4WD from the yard yesterday. $150 smacks. I accidently left the center drive shaft behind:banghead:. The yard I got the tranny from is about an hour away. Can I pull a DS from a regular 5 spd hi /lo or do I need that exact one from the FT4WD. I need to go to the yard tomorrow to get a pedal assy and would like to go to one ot the more local yards. Also Murphy the T-Wag has the 3.7 diff, but it's not the LSD diff . Will this cause a problem with the FT4WD?
  10. I have been writing about my tranny swap progress on the "Tranny Swap Options" thread, but figured this bit of info deserved its own thread. I went to the J-Yard yesterday and pulled a FT4WD tranny from a dead Subie wagon. It was one with the raised roof, but it looks like a tree had fallen on of it, so, now it's raised not so much:eek:. The donor car was labeled as '"Full Time 4 WD" on the rear drivers side, but not on the passenger side. I'm pretty sure it said turbo on the one label, but I can't say for sure. It had all the familliar trapping of a turbo under the hood - waiste gate assy., up and down pipe, even "the "Subaru Turbo" air channel - but there was no turbo installed. The down pipe was stock and didn't look modded. So the engine was MPFI with no turbo. I would think that taking out the turbo would make that car run crappy. Anyone seen this from the factory or is this (more likely) a mod?
  11. Pulled the FT4WD from the yard today. $150 smacks. I accidently left the center drive shaft behind:banghead:. The yard I got the tranny from is about an hour away. 12. Is the front and the rear both LSD or just the front?
  13. UPDATE - Went to the J Yard today to look for a center console and stuff for the tranny. I found a FT4WD Wagon with everything but the rear diff. I am thinking that, since I will most likely have to pull the tranny to get all the shifty bits, I might as well get the tranny. A. E. D. doesn't have one of these, and I'm liking the idea of having AWD with the locking diff. I would like to have the low gear option, but figure between the two options, the AWD will be more functional as the car is a street roamer and won't be doing much mud mucking. I wish the junk wagon had its rear diff., as it was probably a limited slip, which Murphy doesn't have.
  14. I'm going to the Bone Yard this morning to do some center console reconisance. My choice of transmision will be determined by the consoles I can find. I suspect that the plain ol' 5 speed with lever actuated high low is going to be the only type of console I will find.
  15. This week-end I will finally be ready to swap the crappy 3 A/T in Murphy, the $500 87 Turbo Wagon, with a 5 speed. I just got off the phone with the guys at All Engine Distributing, a local used engine / tranny reseller. They have several 5 speeds in stock, including several 3.7's. To activate 4WD, some are vacuum and some are lever actuated. Some are Full Time 4WD with hi / lo. Which in you oppinion is the best option? Consider instalation issues (if vacuum activated, where to pull the vac) and functionallity The car is not going to be doing much in the way of serious off roading, though I will be driving on the beach from time to time, and maybe a snowy Sierra Nevada mountain road or two.
  16. Do not drive that Subie in 4WD on dry pavement. It simply isn't designed for that. I have my suspicions about why they designed it like that, something about turning in snowy conditions, but one of the tech-heads will come along and give a better explaintion why than I could. PS. Congrats on the band. Bass Players Rule!!! One reason I love Subies so much is that they are PERFECT Band Wagons. While everyone else is getting rained or snowed on, fiddling with tarps and tie-downs, I've already packed my bass rig into Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag, and am in 4WD, heading down the mountain on my way home. Should write a song about that.
  17. I was getting a quote on a new EJ22 for my 94 wagon. The guy I was talking to said the engines mated to auto trannys have EGR valves, while those with manual trannys do not. Does this sound right to you? Is this also true for EA-82T's, and if so, will that effect the auto to 5 speed tranny swap in my 87 T-Wag? Also, will EJ-22's made for 95 - 2000 (DOHC vs SOHC) Subies fit into the 94 with out modification? PS. Is the EJ-22 a non-interference engine?
  18. Today I went through the engine looking for external things that might cause it to be frozen. Timing belts are OK and not broken. Starter is out of car. I am pretty sure it is the motor itself. So now I have to search for a new(er) one. There is a place in town called All Engine Distributing that sells all sorts of engines, auto and ag. I will check with them to see what they sell a new motor for.
  19. I didn't think of the possibility that the starter could be frozen on the flywheel. I'll check that. Someone on the old gen list pulled a car fax already. I might have trped it in wrong here.
  20. Congrats! You are well on your way to becoming a Subitologist, GL class:banana:
