i have to agree with Ed. its nice knowing that if i ever have any problems with my car, i can just barrow my father's or sisters as they both drive sticks, and nothing else. its alot easier learning when you are new to driving because most people who have driven auto their whole life are too lazy or not compelled to learn how to drive a MT. it really adds to the driving experience.

subyrally's annual frederick cookout!!!
75subie replied to subyrally's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
hows brat progress going for you man? any pics? glad you finally got a brat! i just pulled mine out to clean it up and put it back on the road and damn, its already starting to rust after spending just one winter on blacktop outside. i think that bothers me more than if i had a new car that got scratched or dinged. -
now with MORE lights!! (looky looky pics inside!)

i`m in the process of trying to aquire a 79 4wd wagon. it's not set in stone yet, but if i do put a deal together with the guy before the dragon would anybody consider driving/towing it up to me at zip 12586? the car is in Hampton, TN, almost directly on the way to the dragon. its 3 hrs from the fontana village resort to the 79, and then 9 hrs 43 mins to my place. my offer is, i`ll pay your gas both ways for your vehicle (and gas for the 79 on the way back) let me know, Jon

on another note, penguin are you going to the va beach area in the near future? there is a guy down there that i stopped in to see a week ago. he was a subaru dealer from 68-2002, and has been a dealer for over 50 yrs total. (he now runs a little hole in the wall style place) seemed like he was down on his luck, and most of the cars looked as if they have been there a while, but he was a real nice old fellow. i stood there talking with him for probly an hour. anyway, he has a REALLY clean ea82 5speed d/r coupe with very little rust and working a/c for $900 obo, along with another coupe, a few xt turbos, a few wagons, ect ect. his prices seemed very reasonable. amazingly he also said he has a TON of new early subaru parts in his storage, like 2 containers full. he bought out some dealer in MI in the 80s and put it all in storage. he said he really couldn`t even remember all thats there. if you ever go down to the beach, please pm me, i`ll send you his #. if you could take pix, or a rough inventory of what he has, that'd be great. you probly would find something to buy as well. i`ll gladly give you some $$ as well.

hey, if you guys seriously want to drive this far, you can have the whole thing, or bring a sawzall and cut away. its a great carcuss for all the peices you need. its towable if you have a dolly as well.
-
if you guys were closer, i`d let you take my parts brat, or come and cut sections off of it. from the cab forward its nearly rust free. if i cut it up to bring it to the dump, and you guys haven`t fixed this one yet, i`ll try to cut and send sections. but yeah, from what i`ve seen you can just cut the rust out and weld new sheet metal in its place. just make sure you overlap panels. these cars have good structure.

no pic?

i've seen simular rust fixed. the best way to go about it is grind off all signs of rust, prime the heck out of it. then get some steel together and make some caps to cover the rusted area +about an inch overlapping. weld those on the best you can (or pop rivet, but i doubt thats as strong) then get some rubberized undercoating and coat the heck out of it. this will not be as strong as original, but definatly preserves the car just a little longer. its still safe to drive for a few years. its fixable, but probly not worth trying to make it original again.

does it not run? you can buy a replacement at a junk yard for -$100. i hate to be an a$$ but if it ain`t broke don`t fix it. that is unless you want it to be a learning experience in which case it would probly take you no longer then 2 to 4 days off having the correct tools, a manual, and all parts in hand. good luck

got back early from vacation i have a few things to button up in the morning, but i'm gonna try to make it down to meet some of you guys. gonna try scrapin up some gas money, looked up the directions to the address Connie pm'd me, it looks like only about an hour and 17 mins. i know i missed out on the burger and hotdog count, but i`m trying to cut back anyway lol:rolleyes: i`ll be in my redneck mobile. a 97 imp obs dark blue with both doors and fender on the drivers side dark green, and a green pass side door. it also has mismatched mirrors and 3 different brand tires oh yeah, and some exposed bondo/slidehammer holes. its a work in progress. theres a case of black spray paint in the trunk tho;) hope to see you all there......... -
nice coupe mike, still real straight looking hey nip, if you want another gl coupe, i just this week saw and spoke to the owner of a 87 GL 5sp d/r 4wd in VA Beach for $900. body was in great shape, absolutly no rust exept for the usual windshield corner rust. still had the factory steel wheels with all 4 centers and all 4 mudflaps. working a/c too.

if your seriosly interested i probably could. you could save and get a one way flight, then drive a brat back!i am leaving tommorow afternoon for tn tho, but i`ll be back by the 30th. i`d let go of the lifted blue one. it'd take alot of persuading to make me let go of the brown 85 tho. not because its any better, but it just has sentimental value to me. -
