Anyone else go cross country with an EA81T?
Prospeeder replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would get a new radiator if i were you, highway driving made my Subaru with a clogged radiator heat up fast and run really hot! In town it usually stayed cool. if it has a newer radiator i wouldnt worry then -
HID lights on the GL wagon
Prospeeder replied to suberdave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my headlights used to SUCK!!! But i got some new headlights from Edrach and they looked like new, and they light up the road probably just as good as the original picture with the HIDs -
Help me... What's it worth?
Prospeeder replied to oronocova's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
for a non running justy (knocking = dead engine so really its not running) id say 300$ max for it, its like trying to sell a geo metro with a blown up motor, the 4x4 might be all that might interest people -
i used a 4 foot long pipe to do mine, it ruined my 1/2 in drive ratchet tho, destroyed the ratcheting mechinism, so i returned it to sears and got another one for free, lol. left it in gear with the Ebrake on

86 EA82 Clutch swap
Prospeeder replied to Subaru_Mechanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
umm clutch.....automatics dont have clutches, they have torque converters, manuals and automatics, TOTALLY different in operation. Sooo uhhh yea there could be complications on putting the clutch in the automatic, lol, it wont have a place to go. Oh but im thinking you mean the engine that had the automatic. shoulda said that more clearly. Some1 should know if the flywheels are the same for autos and manuals -
Central locking door system
Prospeeder replied to mazlik's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well a central locking system is just that, the drivers door is the "Central" lock and the other locks do the same as it, unlock or lock. There is no acuator in the drivers door, but there are in the other 3 doors. -

Stiff clutch cable - found my solution
Prospeeder replied to Prospeeder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
im fast enough with the clutch and gas i dont (if barley) roll back to go. -
Brand new Dealer intake gaskets. Im guessing the spark plug had the stuff on it from when the gaskets were leaking. But im pretty sure the heads are cracked or somthing, because theres wetness around where the exhaust meets the head on the passenger side. But the car does run odd, it probably has some air leaks, can you order complete vacuum hose kits for these cars from the dealer, same with that STUPID intake hose from the airbox to the turbo, it broke, and i got one from the j/y and it cracked as i put it on (it was Warm too, i put it on a head vent for a few hours before i brought it out to put on. So i might have air leaks too. But its definyl got coolant coming out the tail pipe, may not be alot, but some. The running condition and coolant lost decreased ALOT when i did the intake gaskets, so im confident they sealed ok. Im actually kinda looking forward to pulling the heads this spring, it might be fun, i hope i can get this car to run tip top this coming winter. Also the thermostat housing is leaking like 2-3 drops a day i would guess, from one small spot, its so slow you cant visually see it leak, just the residue/liquid left.
-
oh really, would you be willing to sell them in the future? and for how much....
-
Well crap, i guess what everyones been saying is true (im so hard headed, ahha) Well the car when u drive it, runs great, you stop, turn it off, and walk away for prolly 10 minutes, come back, and it belches out a hideious white cloud of coolant smelling smoke. Its loosing aout a pint of coolant every 4-5 days. Intake gaskets are brand new, and the bolts are all tight. WHen its warm, it has a miss at idle, like a "puh puh puh ....pt put put..ptpt puh puh like a disruption in the exhaust and the car will like, shake when it does the miss, but when ice cold it runs smooth as ever. Im thinking cracked heads more than a headgasket, because it doesnt overheat, doesnt have bubbles in the system, no coolant in oil, or vise versa. No external leaks besides the thermostat houising very slowly seeping out coolant. I pulled a spark plug, and it had white ************ on it and it smelled abit like coolant. but it was hard to tell. Hmm i dunno if i could "try" to sell this car before it gets worse (if cracks in the head can get worse if the car stays cool) The only way this could have happend is when my cars radiator was plugged up and it ran 3/4 of thegauge while driving, and one time up a hill it got right before red and i turned around and went back down the the temp went back to 3/4. My friend commented on being able to smell coolant when following me. Man i got some bad subaru luck, lol. I was gonna just drive it till march, im gonna drive my Pontiac, and id have all spring and summer to work on this car if needed, but it has some knarly dents and some decent body rust, nothing frame related tho.

Well i have a stiff clutch pedal. The pedal also liked to stick when it got really cold out also. Very annoying, well i lost a part of the cable to my hillholder so i disconnected it, havent had to problem since, the pedal is much easier and it has never once stuck and its been really cold latley. So much for buying that new cable, i stil have it in the original package so if anyone wants it lemmie know, i spent 29$ and 5$ shipping for it. So if your having stiff clutch problems, and ur hillholder doesnt work anyway, disconnect the cable or replace it, it may be the problem

LSDs are nice, mines got a Brand new LSD, that has like 10k or less on it, its still somewhat shiny and silver, iv been through some mud/snow so its not as shiny as when i bought the car. I didnt know they were so rare! If my car blew up i know what id be advratising for sale, lol.

low oil pressure in e82
Prospeeder replied to floortom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
try a new pump before you destroy the engine. If its not nocking liek crazy and the lifters arnt screaming. If even the lifters arnt screaming your sender could be messed up -
Today i watched a 2000 or so Subaru OUtback AWD slid into a ditch, so the front was in the snow bank, and she was stuck, only one wheel has to loose traction in the front or back and your screwed. So i hooked up my towstrap and with easy pulled her right out slowly, didnt wanna do any damage. She thanked me and drove off, i felt pretty happy seeing as my old subaru pulled a new one out.

Reasonable price for my RX?
Prospeeder replied to Prospeeder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I dunno old subes sell for alot here for some reason, an 85 Brat, Beat to HELL, bald tires, peeling paint, rust, dents and missing jumpseats, ripped up interior, went for 2500$! 4 Speed Dual range. So i might be able to get a 1000 or so for it. -
Well im sure im going to be selling this thing right after winter. Now granted i fix the thermostat housing so it stops seaping out coolant, and start it cold, and it runs fine for the most part. What do you think i could fetch for this thing. So far it has 35k Motor less than 10k on Clutch CV joints ignition system Rear LSD and Driveshaft Less than 1500 miles on Alternator Intake Gaskets Alot of coolant hoses timing belts main seal water pump Radiator (BRAND new) New Muffler and Chrome tip Headlights will be getting replaced with good ones Paints in OK condition, clear coat peeling on roof and trunk Surface rust around rear wheel wells, nothing structural Rear defroster, like 1/2 of the lines work Heater does work A/c Inoperable, just a line was leaking, compressor is good Windsheild has no cracks Gauges all work Doesnt overheat, stays right at 1/3 of the gauge in all situations GREAT tires, lots of tread, the Snow tires look nearly new and the studs are still sharp, may be included also. ALL power windows work and are fairly quick Manual transmission goes into every gear fine, and is abit notchey, and the clutch has never slipped for me. Car is very very queit exhaust wise, you can barley hear the exhaust, you mostley hear the clutch fan winding up. No suspension shake on highway, rear struts good, fronts alittle bouncy. Frame is straight Now im saying any person on the street who would buy this thing, not some1 who can pick every problem out http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/Prospeeder/Subaru/RX.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/Prospeeder/Subaru/interior.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/Prospeeder/Subaru/RXside.jpg I was thinking of Putting 1000 in the window and seeing if anyone bit on it.... i sold my 1988 mazda with no options and 160k , burned oil and had a salvage title for 750$ Iv got about 750$ total into the car, including How much i bought it for, licensing, and everything

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46734&highlight=Headgasket+blown heres one, He said it was never overheated. But theres no conclusion, so for sure we dont 100% know it was a headgasket, but it sure sounded like it. Sorry to argue so much, but iv searched alot on headgasket symptoms because i suspected it, and have seen some that didnt have overheating as a headgasket cause, but im sure overheating is a major cause of blowing headgaskets, but the cooling systems in these cars seem very unstable and inefficient,
-
Didnt expect it, just the "omg subarus are so reliable omg", and hearing of every one blowing a headgasket under 100k and roasting cylinder heads like its going out of style is a little rediculous. Oh and the point of my Grandmothers experience would be the extreme problems the EA82T problems you say are just my car or somthing. Giving another example, but im sure it doesnt matter cause its just a Lemon right....right.... I Like subarus for what they are, Good looking, 4WD, versatile, solid bottom end from what i hear, but i wouldnt buy a turbo one again, i woudl consider an SPFI one or somthing tho not saying ALL subarus are peices of garbage, but the turbo ones have the most problems, and he wanted to know what problems the Turbos had. and you all have basicly said, leaks, and leaks, and headgaskets, and cracked heads, sooo with all that, how can you say its NOT reliable? i can admit some things age, like the vacuum lines, but some things could just be made better quality

bah my pontiac Grand Prix is 17 and all of its rubber parts are original and are all still soft and pliable, none of the sensors have failed yet, i have had one coolant hose blow, and it was actually a hardline that rusted, right next to the passenger side wheel well. doesnt leak a drop of coolant, or oil, doesnt make any funy noises, Air hoses are all still perfectly felixable and dont break and crack. and also it was its 2nd production year model, and a turbo, and a limited run car. Trust me, im going GM only after this expericence. (also my mazda was 18 going on 19 and all the rubber parts were original as far as i knew and they were all perfectly soft, and none of the sensor failed for its FI, and it ran great with minimal problems, just oil leaks.) I would say this shows a pretty good lineup of EA82T problems, especially the leaks, cracked heads, cooling system problems, ect, because if you search, theres a bazillion posts on stuff just like im talking about, mostley turbo models. (can you tell im not having a super happy Subaru Experience.) My Grandma had a 1988 Subaru GL-10 Turbo, she Left the peice of ************ at the Mechanics shop in 1998 and told them to keep it after the Waterpump blew, heatercore blew, timing belts broke 3 times, drive belts wouldnt stop breaking, a/c line blew, coolant line after coolant line blew, main started leaking, ECS light on constantly from sensor malfunctioning. she finally said screw it and left it at the mechanics and left him the title. She forgot to mention those details to me untill i bought mine. She had it maintained perfectly, and never drove it hard, prolly barley had 120k on it then
-
Well its fun as hell to drive, i love it, i dont love fixing somthing every single day. Its getting really old.
-
If anyone asks me about an EA82T ill tell them. Its NOT a reliable engine, and not for some1 looking for good reliable transportation, especially cheap and efficent. It gets poor mileage, well for a 4 banger it does. Iv had many many coolant hoses blow, gaskets fail, main seal pouring our oil, timing belts broke (before i got it) water pump failed, turbo hose (coolant), MANY MANY vacuum hoses break and crystalized, air intake hose broke (nice ripoff of 40$ for that) to have it just crack again. PCV hoses all break, parts hard to find, turbo blowing oil smoke on start, heads probably cracked and leaking coolant, radiator go bad thermostat housing wont seal, sensor after sensor failing, oh man im having soooo much fun with this car i can hardly stand it, and it only has 35k on the engine. Its getting a big for sale sign in it in a few months when the winter snow breaks.
