- Mudrat Designs???
THANK YOU Mikeshoup, looks like I got some head scratching to do. Did all work out for everyone involved??? I hope so.- Mudrat Designs???
Anyone know if Mudrat is still around? I'd like to get ahold of him and get some things off him for a project or two that I might be getting. Not to push buttons or start problems but I think I remember in my drunken haze that I am to be fore warned to NOT trust him. Was this my drunkeness or someone having fun or SERIOUS? I don't want to throw $$$ I don't have away on bunk products and all but he might be my best best w/o alot of head scratching and down time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.- What Have You Done To Customize Your Soob?

DON"T WASTE YOUR $$$. Otima's have gone to SH** in the last five, six years. BIg ol POS's. Go with a Napa dry cell (same style as OLD GOOD Optima's). I killed an Optima Red Top in the LESS than 2 years in my old 04 Frontier (granted had KILLER 1300w stereo in it ), but none the less EVERYONE I've spoken to about replacing the Optima Yellow Top (that's dying after LESS THAN 2 YEARS) in my 98 LOB (with FACTORY no-frills stereo) that used to be in my Fronty, says the same thing "DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. THEY CHANGED THERE DESIGN AND ARE SH** NOW. GO WITH NAPA) Even the independent shops say the same thing. I wish I knew the web address but google should tell you and just check the ratings of the dry cell batteries. Same thing. Wish I kneew that before I wasted the $$$, but atleast this time I kept the reciept for the battery. Dry cells are GREAT batteries and I WILL be getting a NAPA shortly, and a refund from Optima for their POS battery. Sorry for the foul language but after forking $300 in 2 years for batteries I aint no happy camper and want to warn EVERYONE.- Pick my car
Mugs, welcome to the site. As for choices of a good Subie 4X4 Wagon that you can lift and what not, I'd personally go with an EA81 (the style of SJRs Hatch only in wagon form). That and if you and your son find a Brat later on, all the lift components will swap right in. From what I've gathered over time and reading through the older postings (going back as far as possible) from what I remember they are smaller on the outside and have a better turning radius as well. As for fuel injection on an older gen engine (EA81/82) that was originally carbed check out http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=67272&highlight=spfi . Yes you can always drop a newer EJ series into your ride and gain some HP, but the old EA81s are basically grenade and bomb proof and will run FOREVER. Avoid the EA82s if possibbe due to the timing belts. Avoid the EA**t's (turbo's). They wont do any good offroad and are very temprimental from what I've read (besides the fact that the EA81t's only came in an autocrapic anyways). If you find an EA81 with an automatic it will have the hydro lifters instead of the solids available in the manuals. The Dual Range transmission of choice for lifted rides is the HIGHLY coveted 5spd which was only available from 85-89(?). As for getting the later EA82's or Loyale series I believe you can put a D/r into them (someone on here is doing it atleast http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=72984&highlight=D%2Fr%2A%2A+Loyale) The locked diff option is the "Lincoln" Lock (welded) or going LSD. You can go with an LSD but.... Someone told me that the 5spds are capable of an LSD of some sort, for the front ONLY would be my guess. As for rodding of the engines I believe we are limited to cam grinds http://www.deltacam.com/index.php but you can always check out google for the personal aircraft guys that use the EAs (LOTS of $$$ from what I've gathered). My best friend after joining this site was the good old "search" tool, he showed me alot of interesting stuff and just reading all the posts in the different sections (retrofitting, older gen and off road) as far back as possible that sounded like something good/ informal/ intersting. Good luck with everything. PS- we WILL ALL want pics of what you get and your progress, so, fair warning:grin:- XT6 Air Suspension Compressor Fuse
I don't know about free but I'll talk to my friend and see what he wants for it.- EJ Swap w/ Guage Cluster Question
Sorry guys, forgot to mention this will be going into my 1985 Brat.:-p- EJ Swap w/ Guage Cluster Question
I've seen pics of people using Impreza guage clusters in their EA81s and was wondering since I hopefully will be getting an EJ out of an Impreza if I grab the cluster too is it a more or less direct bolt in swap. The cluster and engine will be from a 1993 Impreza. I know I have ALOT of work to do for the engine swap and figured I might make it a little easier (and nicer) if I use the donor cluster as well. Any help/ tips would be appreciated on the guage cluster swap as I know their are TONS of EJ swap threads to sort through, but I haven't really seen anything about the cluster swaps.- XT6 Air Suspension Compressor Fuse
Anyone know where the fuse for the air suspension compressor is? It's not labeled in the main panel under the dash. My friend just bought one that was converted to coils and he says the compressor comes on whenever he starts the car. And before anyone tells me to go to XT6.net or anything, it's not my car and I don't feel like registering on any new forums. Any help would be greatly appreciated.- EA82 into EA81
I have my 84 Brat thats dead in the water (engine wise) and my running 86 GL Wagon 4X4 and am wondering what it would take to put my carbed EA82 into my Brat? Is it a straight bolt in and play? I'm not doing this as a PERMINENT swap, just a temp. until I get either a) running EA81 or EJ18. I'm tired of having no pickup truck and with summer approaching and riding season started I'd like to take my bike out without having to borrow a trailer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.- thinking of repainting my wagon + photoshop =
Looks sic as sh**!!! Go for it:headbang:- Time for a NorNV/NorCal meet!
I'm game for any weekend. It would be nice to meet a few heads on here and see some other peoples rides. As for the wheelin, depending on the terrain, hope someone doesn't mind a passenger, I don't want to hurt my OB as it's my daily and I haven't got all the bugs out of the GL yet, but if I can get it running good enough, I'll beat it:headbang: .- Roll call!
Well, I guess I'll add all of mine as well in the order I recieved them. 1998 Outback with the f'in 2.5 traded my Nissan Frontier in for it and yes, I've already blown the head gaskets- one month after purchasing:mad: 1983 Rust Wagon 4X4 bought for $200 for parts for my Brat that I was going to get. Had four different d/r 4spds put in and ALL would not go into third:mad: . Then as I was moving it into storage I think (hope) it blew a head gasket. Will be stripping for the Brat and ditching the rest. Next is my Brat. 1984. Got it in trade for the running gear and air suspension out of an 86 Turbo coupe MINUS rear discs (kept for myself). Does not run and will not move (tranny seized I hope). Will be getting an SPFI EA81, SJR 4 or 6 inch lift and already got some 14" Pugs for it (got the Pugs off a friend for $50 ). Last for now is my 1986 Gl Wagon 4X4. Bought it off TahoeSoob for $350 for the d/r 5spd, only it's too nice to part out. Came with NEW snow tires, plugs and wires, timng belts just replaced and new hoses. Was missing one hose and replaced it, now after putting 22 miles on it, it does not like to run. Hoping its the accelerator pump. Plans include an SJR t-case lift and 6 lug conversion. And to think, four months ago I did not have even one Subie, now I have four:grin: . Minus the Outback I've paid a total of $675 for three Subies and have my eyes on another 83 4X4 Wagon and an extra engine (both been sitting for a while and needing gaskets and seals) for $100:eek: . Also know of more EA81 wagons, one 2wd EA81 Coupe, one 2wd Hatch, ALOT of EA81 and some EA71 parts, 2 EA71 Brats (one rolled one not), 2 EA81 Brats, and a 78 and 79 4X4 Wagon in the area. I think I'm in trouble:lol:- Looking for tube buggy pictures with subbie running gear
Same with Wyoming. As long as it has mudflaps it can be driven down the road, atleast 6 years ago you could.- EA81 CA Smog w/o CA engine Questions
I live in Amador County. 44 miles SE of Sacramento. Savage- I DEFINATELY second ditching the smog setup after the test, but I have to pass the test first to drive it legally on the street- EA81 CA Smog w/o CA engine Questions
OK. After switching out 3 different D/R 4spds and still having no 3rd gear, I've given up getting my parts car driving and will be yanking the engine out of it and putting it into my Brat. My only concern is the fact that I live in CA and have to smog it:( . I've never swapped an engine on a car needing smog so this will be a first. The engine is from a Nevada car and runs good. BUT, does it have the necessary goodies (engine parts wise) to put into a CA Brat w/ the necessary smog crap? My main concern is having to tear down a good running motor to add the necessary parts. Does everything that's not included on the Nevada engine bolt up w/o having to teardown my engine? Sorry for the stupid questions but, as I said, never had to deal w/ smog before on engine swapping. Any info would be greatly appreciated.- Lifted EA71 Pics Wanted
I know there are very few people out there who have managed to lift their EA71s. I'd like to see pics of them and the list of mods done to them, including lift size. Any help would be greatly appreciated.- D/R IDing
I know of a 5 speed D/R that is for sale but the guy does not have any info on what the trans came out of. Is there a way to ID the diff gearing on it and any way to tell if it came from a turbo or N/A? I have a 5 speed D/R out of a turbo coupe w/ 3.7 gearing but I need the 3.9s and a N/A trans. Any way to ID these things before I drop the chunk of change???- Auto to manual trans. Good idea?
Well something happened so I cannot edit the reply I JUST posted (WTF?!?!?!?). Can I take the 3.9 parts out of my D/R 4 speed and put them into the 5 speed D/R? Or am I stuck with the 3.7s on my soon to be lifted rig???- Auto to manual trans. Good idea?
OK. So I have a D/R 5 speed I just pulled from an 85 Turbo 4 door that has 3.7 gearing. I have just the trans. The vehicle I was going to put this into has 3.9 gears. I'm SOL w/o swapping to the 3.7s:confused: . I want the 3.9s and everything but...- D/R 5 speed driveshaft Q's
I'm replacing the bad d/r 4 speed with the d/r 5 speed in my 83 GL Wagon, if I can get all the parts for it - Mudrat Designs???
