  1. looks like sgp.com is quoting you parts: 13085aa080 toothed idler 13073aa142 lower smooth idler 13073aa190 upper smooth idler and importexperts kits has 2: 13073aa142 (mmm :-\) however you mention the tensioner part: 13069AA037. I think that is the old tensioner and you need: 13033-AA040 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=220340667155
  2. for the 98 obs i just received the kit from Import experts on ebay: TS26172 I also just got the Paraut waterpump from them: PTNM: 131-2102 theimportexperts looks like they are currently out of stock for both on ebay I'll be doing the 2nd TB change this summer ~150k miles, so just starting to collect parts now. the only other thing is the TB covers are a B**ch to remove as and I've already bought the driver side inside cover to replace the one I boffed up-I guess you only really need a couple bolts to hold on the covers :-\
  3. just in case we're not all member on all the subaru forums (DI) http://www.joost.com/0197pq9/t/WRC-Channel I can't get enough of Sweden, Kenya and Greece and can you even imagine how they can change a transmission in 20 minutes?
  4. driving home I came up with the idea of mounting some small flatter driving lights inside my non-functional hood scoop. would it be legal? and would they even be that effective for the size they would have to be?
  5. so, why can't subaru/FHI conceptualize a practical car for our most likely future? 1.8 boxer to supplement toyotas hybid technology utilizing a 6eat cvt tranny-i don't care what they look like (mostly) if they are the functional and realiable awd machines we've come to love. I can park my own car and turn my head to see if it's safe to change lanes-I'm sick and tired of bells and whistle that just add weight and increased cost for repairs and insurance. can you tell my next subaru is going to be a 87 gl wagon? 3.7l ? give my an f'n break-yeah, i guess it's needed to move a 3800lb car :-\
  6. the timing belt kit for the 98 OBS seems to be a puzzle. I need to confirm the pulley part #s but the belt is right. why wouldn't this work even though it says Legacy? at least it encompases 98. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220340667155&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem= i'm about to pull the trigger on this unless someone definitely thinks it's wrong. edit: bingo PCI TS26172 http://www.preferredcomponents.com/Subaru.php?PHPSESSID=3e8bde8694ed5f721eadc9c70b181ff0 looks like it should work...maybe
  7. once again: http://www.cars101.com 01 RS got the 2.5, obs 2.2 everything changes for 2002 though. just to add, in Colorado a 2001 obs for 6000 would probably have around 120k miles. I gotta shop for a sooby somewhere else :-\
  8. http://www.cars101.com for options a nice 01 obs is just that, nice. as with any car, you're looking for signs of regular maintenance or evidence of poor maintenance. soobies can go this mileage with little or no maintenance. has the cam belt etc. been replaced? same tires and even wear all around? check the coolant overflow tank for condition of coolant etc., leaking struts?, when you pick up a sooby with this mileage you may be changes fluids, replacing sensors, struts might be getting tired. bottom line, if I saw that car for 6000 I would probably buy it, minus $300 if the timing belt hadn't been changed yet, barring any obvious problems like a fried clutch or overheating it would be nice to have the cruise control and alloy wheels for that price
  9. that is an awesome ride man, older subarus rule. oh, check it! lol, I couldn't resist:
  10. depending where you live the stuff they put on the road can really have corrosive effective on aluminum wheels and other undercarriage parts. "Ice-Slicer" in Colorado contains Magnesium Choride and I try to wash underneath my car as soon as I can. Not sure if the salts would mimic a rubber smell when melted though. could be asphalt from the road in the de-icer maybe. If you open the hood and stand on the side over each wheel (a little harder to see on the driver side) you can look down and see where the axle connects to the transmission and where the inner boots are. also, if you see a lot of grease flung aound in the area then you have a project on your hands. I check my boots at least once a week. I check the outer boots and ball joint boots regularly as well-especially in winter. (this is all for the front) jon
  11. if you notice the paint on the hoood beginning to bubble-I would not pop the hood. burning rubber and burning cv grease on the cat are pretty distinct- we need some more data.
  12. so your betting on this lasting 6 months, okay. what if it doesn't? if it cost you $1000 to fix it, your chances of making it 6 months drastically improves. and I'm pretty sure someone would buy it for $1000. you were going to junk it anyway right. it just sounds strange that you can drop coin for a 2010 but are such a tightwad on this matter. again, obviously no one say if this will last 6 months or 6 years more but I also wouldn't go anywhere without having AAA on speeddial and a screwdriver to take the plates off
  13. if you get a new car-i'd keep the old one-it's worth more to you than it will to anyone else-i'd love to see a pic of it-non interference to boot also, I don't know about the quality of soobies in the last 6 years, safer, of course and more bells and whistles, heavier, less fuel efficient. I detest bank payments for a car so i'm limited to what cash I have and save for the next one-for example, I can't wait for my 04-5 san remo obs se in about 2 1/2 years
  14. generally, imvho, you'll never get the cars value as a trade-in. don't even mention trade-in. buy your new wheels and then determine how much to sell your 98 on Craigs. but if they're willing to give you 3k for trade-in you have a hard decision to make. good luck.
  15. mmm, for $80 I hope you got a little warranty. good to know is was an easy solve though
  16. Ugh, I want to avoid this. Maybe this is why I'm seeing so many '97 to '00s for sale with around 150k+ miles for sale. It's not just the timing belt but water pump (most likely), reseal oil pump, cam seals, idle pulleys, tensioner etc. As I put it, getting to the moon is relatively easy-getting home is the ***************. ha, so with a lower to mid 100k engine inspecting the belt (2nd) is probably not going to reveal any impending doom. now, a wobbling cam sprocket is good to know-prolly why those covers are soo close to the sprocket. Question, do the cam/crankshaft sprockets actually have bearings-aren't they just fixed to the cam and crankshafts (like the crankshaft pulley)?
  17. well, I guess my plan would be to buy that kit and then get another subaru belt 13028AA102 (211 teeth). if the picture is correct in that auction, the belt has 223 teeth. not sure what changes would add 12 teeth. BTW, I removed my TB driverside cover but couldn't tell what tensioner I have. I'm assuming the new kind (build date 11/97). current belt looks good-just a little dust on the cam pulley. ran the engine with the cover off, everything looks tight. should latst the winter at least. my other thought is that the tensioner life is measured in time (duh) more than miles and could be needed to be changed sooner than the belt? any opinions.
  18. oil leaks ftw: http://www.stiblog.com/news/subaru-the-only-brand-to-show-a-sales-increase-in-2008/:rolleyes:
  19. yep, stole my line (insert pic of peter boyle here). did you get the AT light? check radiator cooling lines-that's a lot of pressure on the system with, what like 15 qts? Also, I just want to say how much I love this site, where you can admit a misake and not fear constant flaming
  20. someone chime in and correct me if need be but I think the long history of engine problems was 99-01 with the phase I DOHC 2.5. if you get the 09 flagship you will be a happy camper and in good company and i will hate you jk. ps. just look under the bonnet and the belly once and a while-it's still car and things can happen.
  21. okay, so if I were searching ebay for a timing kit for my 98 OBS, woul this fit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-2001-Subaru-Impreza-2-2-SOHC-Timing-Belt-Kit_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742Q2em153Q2el1262QQcategoryZ33625QQihZ012QQitemZ220334213764 since I can't find an auction specifically for 98 2.2 sohc, I'm thinking this would fit. what if any changes did the 2.2 undergo between 98 to 01? bought the car with 94k-it is on second belt-everything else I would assume but if the dealer was just shining me then 135 is overdue for a belt change-I inspected the belt about 10k ago and "looked" okay. I'm more concerned about tensioner, pulley failure.
  22. that's amazing, thanks for sharing...I'm going out and buying a lift jack post haste
  23. love this post you must yes, proper winter snowflake tires and if you need chains then you probably have other problems eh? oh, cables on fronts only (who has chains and a subaru?).
