  1. Actually all older gen subes are welcome, gen 1 though 3. Seems like there was little interest in the Meet and Greet forum, so I thought I would drop a line in this pond. :-\ Anyone interested? I will have one or two of my EA81s there and I would like a chance to shoot the breeze with other older gen folks. The meet is planned for Alki Beach, here is the link: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=79539
  2. My guess is that the cams are out of phase with the pistons. Go thought the procedure for installing timing belts to make sure that they are lined up correctly.
  3. To the best of my knowledge, yes. Gen 1 brats came with 1800s in 1981 in the States.
  4. Just an update on these brackets. After returning from WCSS8 I found the one of the brackets had broken due to vibrations/stress/etc. I removed the TI brackets and I'm currently running the original steel peices, but I have some thicker TI stock that is already cut and bent. Once the proper holes are drilled they are going back on.
  5. Took it for a drive this morning. I actually had people pull over and yell at me that my car was about to explode... Those theories both sound plausable. I'll run that compression check today if possible. I'm pretty sure its not the turbo, but not sure enough to rule it out yet. Are there any oil lines that I could have accidently plumbed back into the intake? Would this occur if the PCV system was reconnected wrong?
  6. So there is no way that we could have strechy front axles? I'm actually more interested in having 25 spline EA81 front axles so I can slide them on a RX tranny. Any other ideas on getting the fronts to work? Sorry about the semi-hijak.
  7. We will have to have a little EA81T meet sometime in the near future!
  8. Great job Chris, but I still am left with a question. When was the last time that poor subaru was driven hard offroad? Show the URX, not the wag man!
  9. When I awoke this morning, I started the wagon and let it run until it was good and hot. After a time the smoke out the tailpipe HAD been reduced but Bob still had the splif. The minute I touched the throttle however, the smokescreen returned. I don't mean like some exhaust and some smoke, its like this engine breathes in air and exhales smoke. Bad rings (shudder), bad valve guides (wince), hole in piston (more likely than not)? What is, or could be causing this?
  10. I finally got the replacement XTT engine installed and hooked up in my 88 GL-10 but now I have the problem of massive amounts of smoke out of the engine. When you first start it there is not much, but you can easily see it. If you rev it up however, it starts taking big rips and leaves a smoke screen behind it. Not water vapor, but engine oil, and i was told the engine ran before I bought it and that it had come out of a car with a bad tranny that was being scrapped. Any ideas?
  11. Why wasn't that gone over in your conversion guide? Are turbo EA81 tanks suitable?
  12. Do I even need to say that if you ever decide to sell that car that I will fly out to NZ and travel home with it?!? I'm serious man, if you ever do decide to get something else, let me know!!!
  13. Dudes, I should have checked the forums before I left, Zap, I didn't see your post until just now. I am going back this week, so I can look for one then. RX is crushed with the tranny still inside. I was battling the rear discs as the fork lift drew near, but didn't have the drive to get the trans.
  14. Ed, why didn't you tell me you were down there today!? I was there around noon and I'll be back tomorrow morning!
  15. Do any of these sypmtoms point toward a blown headgasket or does it sound more like the radiator might be the problem?
  16. 10-4 on the Tstat. Already put a new OEM one in and it didn't help.
  17. Does anyone have a favorite brand of radiator? I have the water temp gauge installed, but not hooked up. I think that is the next project along with the radiator. Maybe I could have a shop braze a bung for the water temp sensor!!
  18. Is anyone in Washington planning on going to the track day at Bremerton on Friday or the autox there on Sunday? I think I'm going to try to enter both since I have both days open.
  19. I'm fed up and confused with my wagon. I have had a slow overheating problem for the last few months, not getting any worse and not making the car undriveable, but obnoxious none the less. As I drive, the temp gauge will begin to climb past it's old level (dead solid at five bars on the digi dash) and would overheat if I didn't turn on the heater. If I turn on the heater and drive around the car will gradually cool off and return to normal until the next hill or the next time I get on it. I have a new water pump, all new heater/turbo coolant hoses, rad hoses, etc. No leaks besides the radiator overflow when she does get hot and there is no water vapor coming out of the exhaust. It didn't get any better after I ran a bottle of radiator flush through and back flushed the system today. No oil in water or vise versa. Gets hot on the freeway too, and oil temps gradually climb to 250+ *F. The car gets hot more quickly in the daytime compared to night driving. So what do you all think it could be? When I had the heads rebuilt the shop said I had a minor crack between the valves but that it wasn't something to worry about (Sube shop in South sound area) and I have only once or twice had it in the red on the gauge. Could this crack have enlarged and allow exhaust gas to super heat my coolant? Blown headgasket? Super clogged radiator? Things that I have changed since it began to over heat: header, downpipe, exhaust, chopped air box.
  20. I have talked about turning up the boost on my wagon, but have not yet done that. I'm fighting what I beleive to be a clogged radiator and excessivly high oil temps (Above 250*F at times). I really don't feel comfortable adding more stress to the system until these problems are figured out. Besides that, I refuse to turn up boost pressure until I have my intercooler on which requires my hood scoop as well. Soon enough (this summer) I will have all these goodies on the car and will report back how it is etc, but I have WAY TOO MANY PROJECTS to get through before I can work on my baby again. As for getting more power from heads and cam, the real problem with the EA81 in general is that they only rev to 5.5k rpm!!! When talking to my profs at school, they reccomended new springs and retainers stating that the Al pushrods would be fine as is. I will be satisfied if the engine revs to 7k rpm after this and with a VF-11 or TD04 I can fill in the top end with the turbo power while the stock cam fills in power below that.
  21. I don't like the idea of any loose metal upstream of my turbocharger. If you are planning on turning up the wick, I would do everything possible to remove those, just to be on the safe side.
  22. I have not disassembled my EA81T but when I installed my header, I did not notice any tins in the exhaust ports. However, when tearing down a 1600 recently I did noticed tins in it's ports. Not sure why your's has them, but they must be origianl. How many miles on your engine? From your decription of your car, it sounds like you are well on your way to having an awesome Gen 2 turbo.
  23. That was the longest run-on sentance I have ever read. Sucks about your HGs though.
