1998 EJ25 engine and tranny swap into 2000 EJ22 OBS
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
MORE good news. According to the previous said that he has already done the head gaskets. woo hoo.. OBS will rise again. Now I have a spare EJ22 n/a block I can rebuild and play with. looks like an EJ22 will be residing in my BRAT in the near future. BW -
1998 EJ25 engine and tranny swap into 2000 EJ22 OBS
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
It's a DOHC motor. and comes with a set of Borlas. found a thread by legacy777 on nasioc on how to get the fork to work thought about going that route, but this is a complete EJ25 that was taken out of a 1998 RS to do a 05 STi swap into. There is no problems with the motor. I will be taking the heads off and replacing the head gaskets to make sure they don't pop. Sounds like this is going to be the new engine for my OBS. -
from what I read, the ej18 is not going to work w/o some issues. Found a EJ25 for a good price w/a 5spd tranny. my tranny's synchros were going out so it's a good time to do both. Here are a few questions. 1) EJ25 is that pretty much a plug and play for the EJ22 ECU? 2) The new tranny has a hydraulic clutch cable do I need to retrofit the hydraulic system into my car? Thanks for the input. BW

Front is a challenge in terms of the 5 lug. I used XT6 front hubs w/a EA82 crossmember. Since I had the stock Ea81 tranny I used impreza FWD axles. Even after all of that, my wheels still looked like this \--/. I ended up cutting and welding a 1 inch extension onto the control arms. I over build it like crazy but it's not something I would advocate if this is a daily driver. The rears are a bit of a challenge w/o XT6 hubs. Renaissanceman is working on 4x140-5X100 adapters. Go look in the Old Generation forum for those. good luck with everything PM me if you need more info BW

5 speed AWD, discs and suspension in a brat

Looks like your in England. and since Prince Harry is willing to serve in the military and fight in a war zone, I will withhold the mandatory "DO A SEARCH" blast. It all really depends on the cars that you had available to you in England. did the XT6's ever make their way over there. maybe they were called the Alcyone. The 6 cylinder one will give you a full time 4wd set up. There were also some GL-10s here in the states that had full time 4wd and the RX's had d/r full time 4wd. That and any EJ would work perfectly. If you can't find a tranny from an EA series. You could use a tranny from an EJ and then connecting it to the your stock BRAT rear end. There are some 3.9 final drive trannies out there. That would save you from getting an EJ adapter plate/spacer. But you might have to get a custom drive shaft. About wheels and brakes, for the rear, you need to get the aforementioned XT6 rear hubs. These are 5X100 and will work well with any impreza wheel. there is a thread here in the old generation forum about adapter plates to convert the hubs from 4X140 to 5X100. You can use a set of those adapters for the rear. For the fronts you can use EJ stuff, but you might have some problems with axles b/c th EA81 control arms are pretty short. You can get the front control arms from an EA82 and then you would just have to match spline to the tranny. find out what you have locally b/c you will have to spend more money shipping the parts over to you. PM me with any questions. BW -
Nice find. Did you almost lose your Indiana Jones floppy hat to get it out of the temple of old thread? anyone get killed by the poison arrow traps? BW

I do plan to use a ej25 shortblock and make a high compression frankenmotor. I just wanted somthing that i could fix quickly and be able to drive it. If I this is going to be more complicated than a long block swap, I am going to have to hold off until the RX is out of the garage. I am really close to getting it all back together. BW

So what you're telling me is that it might not be a simple 1 day swap. hmm.... that sucks. BW

For those who don't know, I spun a bearing on my EJ22 motor and I need to get this car running. the EJ18 is only temporary until I get the EJ22 rebuilt. So the main issues that I see right now are 1) Need dual port exhaust header. 2) Need to figure out how to bolt on a knock sensor anything else anyone can think of? Thanks BW

S'ko's 2000 OBS repair thread (combined EJ18 & EJ25 threads)
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Yeah I am going the EJ18 route to get the car working and then I will rebuild the EJ22. Maybe try to get a little more power out of it while it's out:grin: Unfortunately, I don't have garage space right now to do the swap b/c the RX is in the middle of the conversion. I might finish up the RX swap first and then get the OBS in line for a motor swap. BW -
Like it says.... I have driving my OBS on a spirited run last night and it started to make this nasty noise known as dead bottom end. It was only 128,000 miles young.... What to do? 1) take the EJ22t motor I am building and put it into the OBS. (have to modify the crossmember and modify the exhaust, use the harness from the EJ22T) but then when I have to smog it in April 2010 I will have to remove the engine 2) temporarily put in the EJ18 long block I have in my garage and rebuild the EJ22 at my leisure 3) go to the JY and get a EJ22 long block and swap it out 4) part it out b/c it’s pretty banged up

I am using a EA81 radiator. I did the hose in a hose trick to get the radiator hoses to work. Took the old EA81 hose and trimmed it at the collar and then put the EJ one on top of that. One thing that I had to do for the lower radiator hose was use a bit of metal tubing to extend it. W/the lift and the EJ, it was hard to find a radiator hose that had the right bents. BW

Headgaskets might be a little extreme. It all depends on what the history of the EJ. What is the mileage, was it overheated. Can it hurt, nope. It will add more complexity to your build. On the plus side, you can reseal the entire engine while the heads are in the shop getting resurfaced. Ohh. and it you are going that far and taking it apart, you might as well remove the valves and take a dremel w/a grinding bit and clean up the ports and gasket match the exhaust. If you don't want to go that far, I would reseal the front and rear seals, do the water pump, reseal the cams, do the timing belt and call it done. When I dropped the EJ into my BRAT, I didn't do the water pump and sure enough 3k later it starts squealing. Luckily for me, I don't have timing belt housing or covers so it was really simple to the water pump and get it taken care of. Keep up the good work and get the BRAT going. BW

HEAVILY modified EA71 anyone?
s'ko replied to Kostamojen's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
of us kicking back and drinking beer and staring at it. might be a bit boring. I saw we roadwarrior the mess out of it and make a crazy blower stick out the hood like in Madmax. -
year and model would help in giving you the info. Usually the wiring diagrams that I have seen will have lines to tell you where the plugs end. BW

HEAVILY modified EA71 anyone?
s'ko replied to Kostamojen's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
ahhhh... looks like my padawan is ready to become a Jedi.... congrats on your purchase. Now what we really have to figure out how to do is put the old EA71 onto Ethan's go kart. -
Tips on changing the Clutch?? '79 Brat
s'ko replied to Crabman's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Things went smoothly overall. The only thing that snagged us up was that baby pilot bearing in the crankshaft. I had a hard time getting it out and ended up destroying the bearing surface and then using a dremel to grind through the bearing housing. but good time were had in the SOCAL old gen scene. BW -
I think that we are on the right track here. So when you put a lift on, you lower the engine crossmember and you also put blocks for the engine mounts and tranny mounts to keep it at the stock height, mate the tranny to the T-case, run a drive shaft forward. hack out the front diff and get the housing modified so that a rear diff can rest in that area. Connect the front axles to the new rear diff and call it done. Now the question is can Scott cast a modified tranny housing that has the front diff portion gone?

The answer is too often the same - "EJ it"
s'ko replied to audio_file's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Audio_file, In the end it's all up to you on what you want to do with "your" car and how you want to spend "your" money. I am in the middle of my RX swap and I was talking to an Impreza swap shop and he said to me "dude... what are you going through all of the trouble of building a EJ frankenmotor, when you can buy a WRX motor for about 2k and put that in there. Then you will have spent less money and have a better platform to work with. My answer: BECAUSE I WANT TO and I can't spend 2k in one shot b/c the my other half will kill me:dead: Ultimately it was b/c I want to. When I was doing posts about my EJ18 BRAT people said to me.. why don't you put in a EJ22 instead. my answer... the EJ18 was FREE. You just have to move on and ignore the "EJ it" crowd. (of which I am a registered and dues paying member:grin: ) and do your thing. Have fun with "your" car and tell us what you do with it. BW -
I think that there are some sensor difference between the early auto trannys and the later ones. I had a friend with a 1999 outback and the tranny took a dump on him, I was able to source a auto tranny from a 1992 leg we were going to put in but I was told that the sensors and the wiring was different Worth looking into. Hop over to legacycentral.org and ask around. BW

Well. Things are looking really good for my RX EJ22t swap to be completed by April 19th. Just order head bolts, cometic gasket, timing belt, o2 sensor and a bunch of other little bits. Only thing left to do is get the group N mounts from my wife for my birthday and in it will go. So come on down to 2615 Curtis Ave in Redondo Beach.. BW
