possible lightweight hatch class for EA82 coupe.
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
pretty close i think. using your figures for the size of the window, I take it as width- 4 feet length- 3 feet. I am assuming that you measured the curve of the glass. that's 12 square feet of glass. at 3.2 lbs per square foot, you get 38.40 lbs. the lexan is 1.56 lbs per square foot for 1/4 inch glass and .95 lbs for 1/8 inch glass. There is also and extremely thin .092 inch glass for rear windows only at .78. The weight would be 3/16-19.68 1/8-11.40 .092-9.36 anywhere from 20lbs to 30 lbs of weight. so if the lexan is 200 plus you are looking at 10 bucks per pound saved. that's equivalent to driving around with 3 less gallons in the gas tank. Hmm.... shorter range, 200 plus dollar rear window..... BW -
meet up w/Marshall while on vacation in Denver. Had him assemble my two emergency axles for my OBS. Picked them up 2 hours later. super nice guy and a great product. I almost don't want to install them b/c they look so pretty. BW

hmmm.. interesting how a post about lightweight windows has now become a peeing match about the weight of doo-doo... let's get off this stercoraceous topic and back to lightweight windows. ohh.. wait I have to go... I need to get rid of some payload.... -

5 lugs is an option, but w/xt6's being harder to find, i am looking at other options. BW -

not sure exact numbers. I am talking about the rear hatch glass on an RX coupe. I don't think it's going to be 15-25 lbs. It's more like 50-60lbs. I guess I can do a rough calculation of weight savings. I found another site that makes lexan windows and a 1/4 inch thick square foot of lexan is 1.56 lbs. the same for glass is 3.2 lbs. I don't know about you but I think I would die if I pooped out even 10 lbs of weight. -
Just got my adapter plate. Having made one myself.. this one is 100000000 bajillions times nicer. Plus, i didn't have to do any cutting/welding/grinding/drilling. Update: Will have to grind off a bit of the adapter on the passenger side for it to fit. It hits the turbo bracket. well worth the money. props to RGUYVER. BW

so here is the website for the actual manufacturer http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/flexite-molded.html I note that it says it's lexan not plexiglass. They will also form custom glass for a price. You need to supply them w/2 pieces of glass (non-returnable) and they will make 10 of them. I sent them an e-mail for price per unit. Depending on the price, I might be willing to donate my rear window. Their factory is in Milton, WA so we could get the meet up at WCSS10 and get the two pieces together and sent to the factory. OR... if we did it before then, we would have the glass picked up and distributed at WCSS10. That would save a ton on shipping and handling -

can you remove glass from the SVX? I would like the rear side glass and the little window that goes up and down. You can also ship to VA b/c I will be there in December. BW -
So I have some pretty sweet plans for the RX, but I don't want to be stuck w/using 4x140 wheels. I know that some people have re-drilled their hubs to a 6 lug set up and I know there is a RX that was re-drilled for 4X100. i am leaning more towards 4X100 b/c there are more sportier wheels available and b/c this is not going to be an offroader. From what I see 6X140 is mostly for trucks. Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

My thoughts exactly. You could even set up the rear suspension on a swing arm, chain drive set up to get more travel. The shifter could be cable operated. 4 cables to move the shift rod in, out, rotate left, rotate right. I have ideas, but no time or space to make this happen. Gyoas, if you guys do enter, give me some lead time so I can lend a hand wrenching or driving chase.

If you have a piece of glass outside of the car, you can use clamps and then get it to fit really nice. I have a set for SVX door top windows I might try and replicate. BW -
Let's make this happen on President's day weekend. I am not sure about camping b/c it might be crazy cold, but if we get enough interest we can maybe do a motel at base of the mountain or maybe a cabin. I do need help with planning routes and stuff. I guess it really depends on what people want to do. One side note is that there is a all subaru meet and cruise that happens once a month on the 17th in Downey, CA. There are usually 50 or so new gen soobs there so it would be nice to get a pack of 80's soobs there for the cruise. Let me know who's up for it. BW

I was looking at my RX and the rear hatch of a 1991 Integra. I couldn't help but notice how similar they look. I researched and found some overall measurements for the RX and the Integra and they are pretty close. RX: length=174.6 Width=65.4, height=53.4 Integra: Length=172.8 Width=66.73, height=52.16 Does anyone have measurements they can take of the rear hatch window for the Integras? Summit racing sells a plexiglass window and if they are close in terms of size, maybe it will retrofit to the RX. I am shooting to lose about 200 pounds from my RX. BW

travel advice needed Los Angeles to Denver

Well made it back last night at 12:00. The trip was basically LA to Denver, Denver to Moab/Arches to Cameron/Grand Canyon. Then Cameron to LA. No major problems with the wagon. Temp gauge stayed in the sweet spot the entire time. This was the first major road trip that I have taken it on so I was alittle wary at first. Meet up with Marshal at MWE for some axles and with Beefaru. BTW you Denver guys should go hear this guy sing. Eric maybe you can head up to WCSS10 and perform. I would be willing to pay to hear your entire set. The only major setback was a speeding ticket in Monticello UT. BTW if you are ever headed through RT89 and the speed changes from 65-45-30. You'd better slow down. Those guys were out in force Saturday night. They probably make all of their revenue from speeding tickets. That's why they can afford those new dodge charger police cars. Overall it was a great trip. BW -
Old member back! Anyone seen my car?

Welcome back. Drove through your area yesterday on my way to Denver. The wagon was sold a few weeks ago to newsoobdude. BW -
What if you did a working vacation type deal. is there anything simple that can be done by someone that they can learn in a day or two? Some of us working stiffs, who are single and have time, might want to take a week vacation and go there to learn how to make your stuff. Then they can make parts for you while they are down there. One way to get some quality control is to have the person make pieces that he wants for his ride, like 3 lift kits and then you chose one to give him as payment or at a discounted price. I realize that this might be more of a liability than helpful so careful screening of the your apprentices might be the first step. I realize that you are a small operation and work on a per order basis, so it might be hard to keep inventory and raw materials. Maybe part of the deal is that they bring their own raw materials. Anyways just some thoughts. BW

nice BRAT mike. We gotta hook up some day and go to pismo and romp. I can maybe bring up two other BRATs depending on how we plan it out. BW

+1 I have a headache now...

The EJ25 DOHC most likely overheated due to the infamous phase 1 gasket problem. if you use the 2.2 heads, you should be able to bolt on a distributor to it. If you have the pass side head, take a look at the back and there should be a sort of round plate about the size of a 50 cent piece w/two tabs securing it to the head. This is where the disty would go. Then everything should be the same as what Monstaru did.

or you could do a EJ22t swap.... no wait... that's what I am doing... On a serious note. Engine swappage is not something for the faint of heart or their first attempt at car wrenching. Sounds like you are familar w/soobies and not a noob so that's a good thing. It also sounds like you have a grasp of what it's going to take to make it work. Do what you want to do and feel good about it. Accept the comments from others and their advice and remember that it's just that. ADVICE. You will be the one that have to do the work and you will be the one who will enjoy the benefits. I ran into the same thing when I did a EJ18 swap into my BRAT. There was the you-shoulda-put-in-a-ej22 bandwagon. But I got the 18 for FREE and can't beat FREE. So EJ27TT RX. heck yeah. I'd rock it. Might want to consider doing a 5 lug swap while you are at it to get the bigger EJ brakes in there.
-
now were talking... I would do some homework and see what the engine replacement laws are in your state and the emissions testing laws. You might be able to get away with an JDM motor and drivetrain for about 1000 or so, maybe 1500 w/shipping. Eastcoastswappers is in MA and they can probably get you the motor. Have fun and take pictures.

WCSS10 Location and Date Set!

mmmmm extra sharp cheddar.... Thanks for all of the info. This does sound like a more family friendly location. BW -
IMO the HP gains from the two would not be worth the effort to do the swap. I would do it if you had a dead EJ22 and a free or really cheap EJ25 that you can get your hands on. tranny will bolt on w/o a problem, the wiring harness will have to be either modified or you can use a trimmed down EJ25 harness. Let me know if you need diagrams. BW

travel advice needed Los Angeles to Denver

According to weather.com, it looks like there is going to be light snow on the 21st. (I feel pretty confident of my OBS's snow romping abilities, but I know that my wife is going to ask me if I am sure, so I am throwing it out here now.) My friend said that if it's snowing, they don't allow cars w/o chains. Do soobies get exempted b/c of they are AWD? What radio stations to I keep a track of if I am headed towards Colorado? I looked on the map and I figure that once I get past Grand Junction, I am pretty much commited to taking the 70 in all the way. Is the Rt50 to I25 any better than the rt70? it is less mountains or are they about the same. Also is there anyone I can get a hold of in the area to either check road conditions or worst case scenario roadside assistance? PM me with numbers. If there are people who are interested in getting together we can maybe do a mini-meet. Thanks. BW
