needing some help in so cal!!!!
s'ko replied to El Toro's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
What is a driver crank door? Do you mean driver's side door w/manual windows? tell him that the ecology PAP locations are having a 1/2 sale on the weekend of the 22nd. I will keep an eye out for gray EA82s. BW -
Ok so would you technically be able to say that an EA81 w/the EA82 SPFI intake is a EA82 SPFI motor for smog purposes. I am thinking of doing the above mentioned mod and I won't be able to tell the smog ref that I put the SPFI intake manifold onto the EA81 b/c they have no benchmark to compare it to. They will be able to test it if I tell them that I have an EA82 SPFI though. BW

I am in the process of making a spare tire holder with a 5 gal jerry can next to it. I plan to mount it to the driver side rear bumper and have it swing out to clear the tailgate when it is lowered. I put a 5 gal jerry can next to it so when it swings out it's about 3 feet long. I feel that this is kinda long so I have two ideas. Should I put a hinge on it so that the jerry can can swing behind the tire when it is open all the way. The main concern there is that the holder needs to swing real wide so that the tail gate can be opened b/c of the added width of the jerry can. Or should I make a seperate holder for the jerry can and make them barn door style. Then I could put on the jerry can when needed and remove it when it's not being used.

ACk..... I am getting really paranoid about driving my SVX around. I had some moron break the rear quarter window on my OBS a while back and stole nothing. Hopefully no one does this to the SVX. On a different note I scored a complete set of door windows for the car from a junkyard. So i might be ok if someone broke the front windows. BW

since you aren't afraid to hack up your cars, why not take it and make it into a three wheeled vehicle. See the thread that I started about powering a rear wheel in this forum You would still need a FWD tranny for this. The basic concept is that in most states, a vehicle that weighs less than 1500 lbs and is on three wheels is considered a motorcycle. You would have to do a lot of weight shaving in get it down that much, but, the important thing it to keep the firewall, b/c then your pedals and brake master cylinders and such are all ready there. The hard part would be the rear end. You would need to tube the rear end and put in a trailing arm w/a rear tire. BW

Measure the distance from the tie down in your bed to the top of the trim and then add about 2 inches. Go to the Hardware store and look for a hook that is that long. Make sure that the threads are a bit longer than the distance between the hook and the chrome. This is a pretty common hardware item. Just make sure you get two nuts so you can lock it together.

Ok so I have limited time to get parts from this. I think it's white. PM Me or Scottf if you have questions. Prices are going to be PAP prices plus a little bit for labor plus shipping. here is the link to the PAP's price list. http://www.pickyourpart.com/pickyourpartparts.php BW

DARN... right down the street from me and the registration is full. well maybe next year. I wonder how much of it has to be original? BW -
For eyeballing my OBS set up. I know that I am going to have to trim the crap out of the rear fender wells, especially the side closer to the doors. Other than that it would be ok.

Help needed ASAP!! EA81T died driving on the freeway
s'ko replied to Scott F's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Scott. I found a XT non turbo w/a spider intake. The bundle of wires coming from the disty has 4 wires. I took the cap off and I was not able to look into the disty to see the module. I can pull the disty at lunch time tomorrow and see if I can dig out the module. BW -

Yes. Your CR will be around 7.9:1. Stock EJ18 CR is 9.5:1. The stock EJ18 will handle 8 lbs or so from the research that a have done. not sure. I guess there are benefits to this, but if you are going w/engine management, like emanage, it might be redundant. I retract my use of absolute words like “will”. Nothing w/the right amount of research and use of engine controls is impossible. IMO it might be unreliable. This is more based on Murphy’s Law and other intangible thoughts flowing across my synapses. I think the most important thing to remember is that if you want to modify/fabricate, you need to either have time and skills or money to do it. I have spent less than 3k on my BRAT build b/c I did all of the work myself. now that would be sick. You can do 20 lbs or so of boost. While you are at it you might as well put wings on the BRAT so it can glide for short distances. -
kinda late, USMB member BRAT1709 (1968-2005) RIP
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I understand. Like I said I considered him my BRAT mentor. He spent a lot of hours with me on the phone talking and working through stuff as I learned the ins and outs of my BRAT. re: the soobie powered airplane. I don't think his ultralight was soobie powered. I remember him telling me that he was going to go get it from someone in the midwest. I think it was assembled. If he had built it I know that he would still be around. He was pretty meticulous about his BRAT. In a lot of ways, the impact on our lives isn't felt until we are gone. (moderators, feel free to move this to OT if you think it's appropriate) BW -

Not sure if you guys remember or know Hugo or Brat1709. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/member.php?u=1257 He was on here for a little bit and was pretty active in the off-roading scene here in Socal. I consider him my BRAT mentor. He was the one who walked me through a lot of my first repairs and SMOG woes. Well I hadn't heard from him in a long time and he never returned my e-mails and stuff so I googled him. I found out that in May of 2005 his ultralight crashed in San Felipe and he died. I felt that it was appropriate to pay homage to him here even though a lot of your don't know him. I wish I had a picture of his BRAT. Hugo was a huge Subaru fanatic. He had vehicles spanning generations of Soobs. Some of the projects he was working on was a 360 sedan, a turbo BRAT. His daily drivers were a BRAT or a red SVX. I know someone is going to make the comment about seeing if his soobs are still with his family. I will tastefully go and see them. (I only met the dude once in person) I will see about that and if there is a possibility that he will live on in the cars that he loved. RIP BROTHER. BW

Compare the damaged control arm to the undamaged on. It might help to unbolt the damaged radius rod to see how it lines up. just by looking at this picture, it does appear that the control arm is twisted, but it may look like that b/c of the banana'ed radius rod.

cause I am waiting for your to say that so I can go pick a new set up for myself. The current ones that I am running are TheyMightPops.... pick a part specials. BW

I have 215/75/r16s on my BRAT. I have yet to test them on my OBS with Forester XT struts. I know that I will need to do a lot of fender trimming to get them to fit right. The only problem I had with the BRAT was that I originally used OBS front struts and the tire would hit the lower spring perch. I put on a set of Outback front struts and they clear just fine. BW

Dalton, I like your enthusiasm. It's great to read about your ideas and your plans with your BRAT. I hesitate to post this b/c I don't want to sound like a naysayer or be nagging you. That being said, the EJ frankenmotor will not be reliable, especially if you are planning to throw 14-15 lbs of boost. The amount of money you are going to spend get it to run and they money spent on rebuilding the motor when it blows up will be the same as finding a WRX motor and dropping it in. It's either 2k now or 2k slowly. I am all for experimenting and doing things that are different and unique. I am actually going to make a EJ18 FRANKENMOTOR similar to what you want to do. Gathering parts now. Not going to be started for about 6 months though. I don't plan to throw more than 8-10 lbs of boost b/c I have the stock EA81 d/r tranny and mine is lifted. If you are interested in EJ18Ts and frankenmotors, check out RS25.com and look at the technical section dealing with turbos. There are a couple of EJ18Ts there. From what I have read, the stock motor can safely handle up to 8lbs of boost. anything higher you will need engine management and other controls. Car modification is not like Grand Turismo or Forza Racing. You can buy parts and slap them on and things will work out awesome. Perfect example is that show "Forza motorsports challenge" After the cars started to get things modified they were overheating and not running well at all. Just my two cents. BW -

s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The only way I would do this to another brat is if the rear was rusted through and the front was smashed up. If I ever cage my cab, I'll probably do something with the roof at that time. Maybe a true targa top. -
Wow... that's really big. I bought this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=013&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=230153745276&rd=1 here is the tach installed (remember DL) It was straight forward install. The main thing that sucks is the glare. I have to figure out how to make a shade or a visor so I can see the tach in the day time. BTW the speedo is 18% off so I am really going close to 80 mph on 29 inch tires. MUHAHAHAHA gotta love EJ power

Thanks. The sun roof was aftermarket job from one of the previous owners. It leaks like mad b/c it's a flat sunroof mounted on a curved roof. I need to somehow make it fit nicer or get a new one. Cracker. give me a call. I might be going to Orange County to trek up Saddleback mountain this weekend.
