Clear write-up on swapping a new gen 5mt into an ea81?
s'ko replied to cyberbackpacker's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
You would need the adapter plate to mate the EJ tranny to the EA motor. I think that the ej tranny is similar to the EA82 tranny in size. It has the two piece driveshaft. There might also be an issue if you are retaining the stock EA81 hubs b/c then you will need custom axles. I have a 5spd EJ tranny from an EJ18 that has a 3.9 final drive. Let me know if you are interested in it. BTW sorry about the XT6 parts. I didn't have time to get them. BW -
Betcha he's got a sweet mullet underneath that ball cap.

Dang... gotta stop parking my truck when I'm drunk...

You can get cast off Impreza rims for about 200-300 a set w/tires. They are 16 inch tires so your selection of tires is limited. 15 inch steelies are plentiful at J/Y and that also increases your selection of tires. I am getting a set of Forester rims w/good tires Saturday for $250. They come w/225/60/16s. Not super huge but it's 1.75 inches larger diameter than the stock tires. I plan to get a set of 15 inch steelies the next time the J/Y is having a 1/2 off sale. BW

I can just see it now.. Zap kneeling on a grimmy oil stained floormat facing west towards Japan. BTW great work on the garage/shed. -
ok who owns the shop on......

richie is also a top notch guy that allows you to pick his brain over the phone. Helped me out countless times. BW -
so ask her if she saw a tunnel of light?? Maybe it saw the blue EA81 wagon and the gray GL-10 that I parted... or the twin XT's that I had to scrap....
-
me too... I was telling my wife the about a month ago.. "BRAT is done, OBS check engine light is gone, SVX is running like a top... all is good in the Subaru Fleet" whamm.. crappy EA81 tranny mounts start to rip. Got those replaced with these... thanks to Scottf and while I was down there I notice that my pass side inner boot is off the DOJ and with the stiffer mounts I am getting a slight drivetrain vibration. Ohhh.. and the AC compressor in the SVX took a crap. (sigh) BW

true. But I have 16 inch rims on my OBS and I would like to keep em at 16. Rally tires don't come that big.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=TY088 they are 195/65/r16 so that's 1.1 inches bigger than stock. so roughly 1/2 increase in radius. Decent tread pattern. kinda pricey at $165 each.

Troll around NASIOC or I-Club and look for Forester guys who are getting rid of their stock stuff and lowering their suspension. I found a guy w/Forester XT struts & springs that had less than 5k on them for 200.00 Craigslist is also your friend. I am getting a set of rins and tires from a forester for $250. they are 225/60/16 so they are a bit bigger than stock size. Hope they fit. It should be only 3/4 of an inch larger in diameter than my stock 205/55/16. BW BW

Still willing to put some money down so I can own a piece of history.. hmmm..what's 1% of priceless??? BW -
don't forget the location of the oil filter. Right up front and you can do it w/o jacking up the car. I remember trying to do the filter in my 1995 Honda Civic

Slightly OT, but let me know how you handle the smog test. I am looking at a 84 wagon to do a SPFI to. BW

My stock Outback Sport can do stuff that is pretty amazing for a sport wagon. Subby are great in fire roads, dunes, shallow mud fields. It's really a rally car type terrain. Their ability gets marginal as terrains gets more extreme. Offroading a soob takes finesse and skill in picking out lines. What a lifted F150 can easily plow through will require a spotter and some fancy clutch/brake work to get through. Ultimately your soob will take you to amazing places as long as you are willing to bang it up. Get the Leg and slap on some Outback struts w/a body lift and that will increase the performance.

I get a slight stumble at idle. Partially b/c I hooked up the thermometer wire to the temp wire to the ECU. I think the signal drain is causing problems there. Will get it corrected soon. I did that b/c my stock BRAT temp wires never worked and I was afraid to run the car w/no temp gauge. One thing that I have determined is that EJ18 w/stock EA81 radiator w/the fan on all the time works just fine.

For 750 you could probably get a complete Legacy EJ22 donor car. BW -

talk about simple design. I might have to make my chassis w/some sort of suspension. Scott, what does it take to make a mold? -
here is some pics of the holder and the bumper mount. I have to reinforce the upper mounting tab to support the weight. Will probably replace the flat piece w/angle iron. The tire holder was a junkyard find, before I started welding so I am modifying it. I could have probably done a better job if I made it from scratch, but oh well... I have yet to make a latch, but I have some ideas. Right now I need to get some beefier tranny mounts made, so this project is back burner. BW

Is the chassis a rear engine design? I am not sure if I will make molds, but it is possible to get urethane foam sheets and then fit them together and fiberglass the whole thing. If I plan to do it I will take pictures and give measurements. my idea is a 1/3 scale BRAT. basically one big enough to fit into the bed of the BRAT. BW -

no worries, I can always make my own shell out of foam and then fiberglass it. BW -

Any chance you could use the shell to make molds out of. Then you could make fiberglass bodies and then we can all make mini brats!!! willing to help with the cose of making the molds. BW
