  1. Nice. Like people said Superdave & rguyver are great resource for complete transplants. Plenty of people here have done engine swaps. pics and stuff will be great when you get this swap started
  2. Miles, NASIOC has some really good documented EJ18 turbo builds. http://www.wac.addr.com/auto/obs/turbo/ejcalcs.html is a good reference point for EJ hybrid motors and compression ratios. This is a Comp Calculator that I made using excel. It’s a nice reference point taking some of the data from the above site and playing with it until it worked. These are not real world numbers and some of the head/block setups may not bolt together. I am not sure of the benefits of putting EA82 pistons into an EJ18 motor. Most people on NASIOC do the EJ22 head swap to lower compression. One drawback with using the EJ18 block is that there is no knock sensor. It might be possible to use an EJ22 harness/CPU and put a knock sensor onto the EJ18 block. Most people don’t bother and rely on emanage or other types of engine control to keep things working.
  3. contact beefaru. He's a great singer. He sang landslide by Fleetwood Mac and made my wife cry... so I punched him.
  4. I think that USMB is like CHEERS. That nice homely feeling where you pull up a stool and grab a beer and gab away about life or in this case Subarus... This calls for a song... USMB theme song Keeping your SOOB alive today takes everything you've got. Getting some help for all the break-age, sure would help a lot. Wouldn't you like to get away? Sometimes you want to go Where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came. You wanna be where you can see, our troubles are all the same You wanna be where everybody knows Your name. T.O.D. and phase 1 gasket, that sure like to pop Making it home in 3WD, the stories never stop Call it a Brumby, Ute or BRAT… You know you wanna go, where everybody knows your pain. And they don’t think your insane, You wanna be where people agree You need an EJ powered EA…. You wanna be where everybody knows Your name You wanna go where people all know The beauty of all wheel drive You wanna go where people keep Subarus alive…….. *bow* thank you... thank you.... BW
  5. The Cali board member that did the swap is SuperNova. There are two ways to get this conversion to pass smog. The easiest if just to take it to a smog station and have them smog it. If the hatch hasn't been tagged as a Gross poluter, you might get away with a smog tech who doesn't know anything about Subarus and test it as is. If it is a gross poluter and you have to take it to a test only station, you might has trouble explaining why you don't have a carb any more. If that is the case you will need to contact a California Air Resources Board (CARB) and arrange for a CARB referee to inspect your car. Tell the operator that you did and engine change and you need to get it inspected. The CARB ref will inspect the hatch as if it were a 91 Loyale. Basically, they want everything that was related to emissions from the 1991 put into the 84 hatch. This means that the CEL light will have to operation so you have to solve the clutch switch neutral switch issue. Once they ok the swap, you will get a new sticker that the regular smog techs can scan that will tell them it's a 1984 CAR w/a 1991 engine. That was the process that I had to go through with EJing my BRAT. You mentioned porting out the intake. If you have time or have taken the engine apart, the heads can benefit from a lot of smoothing. I just ported an old set of EA81 heads this morning and I was really surprised at how much room there was for improvement. Will post pictures on a seperate thread. what area are you located in? Give me a PM if you need help? BW
  6. right on. I am going to go to a rally cross on 2/2/08 at Johnson Valley OHV. Camping is available there and there are some trails. Not sure how rough the terrain is going to be. seeing as this is going to be President's day weekend, there my be a lot of people there. I have Friday off and wife permitting I was planning to head out there early. Please let me know a more firm head count so I don't go there all by my lonesome. BW
  7. what part of california are you going to be at? SMOG rules differ depending on where you are located. RE: registering a non-cali car, send a PM to crabman. He is in the process of getting a 1st Gen BRAT registered in the Los Angeles area. He might provide some insight and help. Supernova was able to convert a Hatch to SPFI and get it to pass smog. here is the link http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=72183&highlight=supernova Depending on what area you area you are going to end up in, legacy's are pretty cheap. Craigslist Orange County has 3 pre 1997 Legs under 2,500. Craigslist Los Angeles has 5 of them for under 2,500. EA81's are getting pretty scarce. They either end up getting junked or people want 3k for them b/c they are cherry. give me a PM if you have any questions about this. BW
  8. Sure. I can do some recon. The main thing that I want to make happen for that weekend is to attend that all sooby drive on Sunday. We can camp out in the Mojave or some other ohv areas. Granted that might be a busy weekend b/c of the holiday but the desert is pretty open and there should be lots of places to go. Let me know who's down for this. BW
  9. Not sure about the Bay area, but old gen soobs are getting harder to find in So Cal. They are mostly EA82s or overpriced BRATs and hatchs. As long as things are mechanically sound, your should be ok with SMOG. They have to take account the age of the vehicle. Older cars get more leniency. You can always do an EJ swap is all else fails. Since the car is from out of state, there is a chance that you will have to get it inspected by a state carb referee. send a PM to Crabman. He bought an out-of-state 78 BRAT and is in the middle of the smog adventures. BW
  10. One month or so bump. Looks like we are gonna get a bunch of snow with this coming storm. bw
  11. Scotty FTW I had some messed up second gear synchros. I lent my OBS to a "friend" of mine and he returned it to me messed up. I figured he was flogging it on the freeway and downshifted from 5th to 2nd b/c I have a short throw shifter. Before scottys, downshifting from 4th to 3rd would cause a small crunch. couldn't downshift into the 2nd gear w/o a lot of grinding and crunching. First gear was impossible. On hard acceleration, 2nd would crunch and so would 3rd After scottys, no downshift problems from 4th to 3rd. slight grinding into 2nd and once in 2nd 1st if no problem. NO noise at all on acceleration. I realize that I will have to replace my tranny eventually b/c there is mechanical damage and this is just a band aid. But so far so good. BW
  12. This is not a one time run right? I need rear only but not right now. BW
  13. bought the mitchell one from ebay. Invaluable for tool. I would pay two to three times the amount w/o hesitation. It has helped a ton with the ej swap that I did. I original bought it for info on my wife's SVX and I have used it for every car I own. BW
  14. I am swapping e-mails w/the guys from crossbreed perf. I am asking it they will sell just the rear hub and not the entire set up. If it's cheap enough or if we can get a group buy together, it might be a cost-effective alternative. BW
  15. Emailed Gary. Here's what he writes... BW
  16. Ok so with the increase in posts asking "can an (insert EJ motor) be put into (insert EA body)" I thought it would be good to compile a list of EJ swaps that way people can ask specific questions through PM. Here goes: Board Member: S'ko Engine: OBD1 EJ18 Chassis: 1982 BRAT Tranny: EA81 D/R 4spd Other: 5 inch lift, 5 lug swap, EA82 crossmember for Powersteering
  17. It's doable, but probably not the best platform for the EJ22T. Power is one thing, but handling... that's what seperates the racing men from the ricer boys. EA82's have few handling options available. The EA81's even less. Would a EJ22T EA81 hatch slammed to the ground w/a 5 lug swap and WRX wheels look hot... heck yeah. but it might handle like a POS. Here's the thing. w/the EJ-EA adapter plate and some wrenching knowledge and willingness to cut sheet metal you can put any EJ into any EA body style. You will have accept that the answer is going to be "doable, but..." because each swap will have it's own set of problems. As long as you are willing to stick to it and make it work, you can do anything. I mean, the themixtoo was doing a complete EJ drivetrain swap into a BRAT, including rear sub-frame. He's still working on it. it's been two or so years. I think I will start a thread that hopefully will be stickyed w/a who's who of EJ swappage so people can PM them w/questions. BW
  18. The reason I looked at the bearing sizes was in the hopes that I could find a bearing that could be pressed into the EA trailing arm and have the EJ hub pressed into that. So the magic number would be a bearing that has a 38mm bore and 58mm O.D. This would fit the EA trailing arm and the EJ hub. EJ bearing's O.D. is 7mm too big. Great. Pics would help in solving this problem.
  19. Poormansimpreza: Thanks for the input. There is another thread going on in the Old Generation forum for an adapter. Based on the a picture that RenaissanceMan put up with the 4x140mm holes compared w/the 5x100mm holes. If you were to redrill the hub to 5X100, you have to weld up two of the 4X140 holes to get it work right. I am leaning more torward 5X100 b/c that's the same as my Impreza and the BRAT. BW
  20. Ok so I realize that the simplest way of doing a 5 lug is to use XT6 parts. with these parts getting hard to find, I am looking for alternatives for the 5 lug set up. From what I found the bearing size of an EA81 EA82 (including XT6)is Front = 1.378 in /35.001 mm bore, 2.8346 in / 72mm O.D. Rear = 1.2598 in /32 mm bore, 2.2835 in /58 mm O.D. EJ bearing size is Front = 1.6535 in/42mm bore, 2.8346 in/72mm O.D. Rear = 1.4961 in/38mm bore, 2.5591 in/65 mm O.D. So it looks like an EJ FRONT hub will press into a EA82 FRONT bearing w/o any problems. Kinda pointless b/c you can't use EJ brakes w/EA82 hub assemblys and the EJ stuff can be bolted directly to the front w/o major modification. This will mostly focus on the rear wheels. So a bearing with 38mm bore and 58mm O.D. bearing would work in the rear. Online search at various bearing houses have come up w/nothing. If anyone can help with that it would be great. If you machine down the EJ hub to 32mm. This is 2mm on each side. I don't have an EJ rear hub lying around to get measurements so if someone has one, can you please measure the thickness of the part that goes into the center of the bearing. So I am thinking that the simplest way to do this is to get the EA82 re-drilled to 5X100. The XT6 rear hub is essentially a EA82 hub that is drilled to 5x100. BW
  21. Well I finally got some time yesterday to work on the swap. The EJ22T engine mounts were torn so I need to get a new set. Does the WRX ones fit? Also the adapter plate from Rguyver needs to be trimmed about an 1/2 or so in the passenger side in order to clear the turbo bracket. need to finish reaming two of the flywheel hole and then bolt it all up. I got the hook up on a cheap TDO4 so I will be looking into getting that put up. I already have a WRX downpipe so it the exhaust if going to be easy to complete. If you guys remember the FrankenBRAT, I just can't do a normal swap. I always have to add something different to the mix. This time I have been looking into alternative 5 lug setup for the rear. The front I plan to use EJ stuff. The rear I am looking at either a bearing swap to make it fit or maybe getting the EJ hub machined down or the EA82 hub redrilled. Will probably do a seperate post for what I find. BW
  22. I would be interested in 5X100 Specifically the rear. B/C that would solve the problem of 5 lug rears. BW
  23. ouch. on the other hand you now have a nifty boomerang How hard do you have to be romping to bend the radius rod? BW
