something like this http://www.designmassif.com/trihawk/ WARNING, website has sound. There is the noise of a car starting. turn speakers down or off at work. I bought these plans http://www.rqriley.com/doran.html but they are pretty useless. They were not drawn by an engineer and a lot of the measurements you have to infer or use geometry to get. Like the a arms do not have lengths for the various parts. . It is basically a metal backbone that's made of out 14 ga 8X4 inch tubing. But he doesn't want you to use a single piece of tube, you have to get 14ga sheet metal and bend it to make 2 8X2 channels and then weld it together. Then the engine and stuff goes onto the backbone. It's not a ladder frame. The composite fiberglass foam core body is secured on top of frame w/reinforced mounting points. THERE IS NO CAGE or METAL TUBE INSIDE THE BODY. If I build to his specs I need to get a yellow jumpsuit that I can wear while driving it. That why I will be the yolk inside of the eggshell. It's an interesting starting point and the use of EA81 hatchback parts is good. I have most of the stuff in the garage so I am good to go there. Just need the design and the metal to make it. So I was kicking around the idea of the powered single rear wheel. I get a welded rear diff and mount a DOJ cup w/a sprocket welded onto it. This will go a the pivot point of a rear swing arm. Chain will go all the way down the swing arm and then connect to the rear axle. The swing arm will be located on the passengers side to offset the weight of the driver. main problems are 1) mounting the sprockets (will have someone else weld for me. 2) gearing. Gearing will have to be close to 1:1 so it matches the front wheels.

So now that the BRAT is completed. I am jonesing for a new project. I have been kicking around the idea of a three wheeled motorcycle. I would like to make it 3WD. So can anyone thing of a way to make it work that way? I guess I could take a rear diff and put it back there but the weight it a bit of a hinderance. I am trying to get it to weight less than 1500 lbs. are there lighter rear differentials that I can use? Doesn't honda or someone make a shaft driven motorcycle? BW

It seems like you are missing something from the power steering lines. What I did was connect the lines from the crossmember to the lines from the EJ engine. Not sure if you still have the parts. Also for the radiator, I am using a stock EA81 radiator. I have the fan wired to stay one when the ECU is powered. I have no problems with heat. In fact the radiator return hose is warm to the touch, while the top hose is hot. I am also only using a single fan. Hope that helps. BW

Took FrankenBRAt to California SMOG Ref. (PASSED)
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Thanks The key is to find out who who your local smog ref is and see if you can get his number. I spent a long time talking to him on the phone and he knew basically what I did when I showed up. Also keep all of the EJ22 OBDI stuff from your donor. Your engine bay should pretty much look like an EJ's bay, expect for the spare tire holder. I also brought my wiring diagrams from the BRAT and the EJ ECU. Give me a PM when you are close to doing the wiring for the Check engine lights and stuff like that. I can give you detailed info on how to do the vehicle speed sensor and how to get the CEL working. W/a OBD1 engine, there is really not that much that can go wrong. The only CEL light I threw was the starter circuit. That was an easy enough fix, just spliced a wire from the starter to the ECU. Anyways thanks again. BW -
Blue and white. No seriously... With that royal blue color I would go with a black or a white. If your blue were a shade lighter I would do the gold/bronze. The color you have to too dark for the gold. And yes you can use the diamond plate idea.

I bought the BRAT is 2004, the 19th day of the second month at night. Not the prettiest but a good score, the price of $550 was just right. Bought it for a friend that I know, for business of lawn shaping. He'd use it to make his dough, as payment I would be taking. Then when he got his own truck, I would buy it back from him. With these terms the deal was struck, it was good, we both would win. Went to the junkyard to look for loot, and what a treasure we found Jumper seat and the frame to boot, wagon wheels just lying around. Then a new fender soon would grace, for the driver’s side there was a dent Then a push bar went on his face, with some lights underneath went He was named BOB merely because, his license plate did state it With care and patience changes was, making him appear less faded. As sometimes in life deals go bad, and the payments were not made So repo BOB no choice I had, although the friendship stayed. Now in my care and the tags a due, it’s off to smog I go I failed the test and was flagged anew, as a gross polluter, oh no. Many months of research and repair, mostly on USMB But the elusive problem was still there, no sign of victory. The EGR was blocked and plugged, the vacuum lines were all crossed Nothing worked, it was all bugged, I was at a total loss. So I kept failing in order to get, a monthly moving pass Time I spent I do forget, too much according to my lass Soon the biggest test yet to rise, is coming into sight And BOB the BRAT to survive, I must put up a valiant fight. The days of singlehood for me, started to set and fade August 28th, 2005 you see, I was engaged and a promise made To wed I would to my sweet dear, not the BRAT you must know But her feelings for BOB were all clear, less affection I must show So money was diverted away, to pay for our wedding plans Greasy hands happened less everyday, as less used were the jack stands Then friend of mine, that hardy chum, borrowed it for a day. I get it back the tranny’s done, in 4th gear it would stay. So off to the junkyard to look for parts, a dual range tranny I did loom Popped it in and as it starts, I drive headlong into DOOM Can you guess what happens next, what calamity befalls You’ll have to wait a bit perplexed, for another paragraph calls The castle nut was not torqued and tight, to the proper tightness So it came loose to my fright, what happens is this horrible frightness Driving down the road at 65, the driver’s side wheel ejects Fighting the steering to stay alive, a Honda Civic wheel it wrecks. Back to my junkyard the parts I find, to fix my (somewhat) trusty steed. Back together and just in time, to do the marrying deed (12/5/04) So for a while BOB does sit, as I spend time with my wife. And not passing smog could it be it, the end of his Subaru life? In the back of my mind I still do try, to determine all that ails Oil blowby on the list is high, of the cause of my SMOG fails Engine Rebuild or engine replace, what should I do o what to do. The problem stares me in the face, and I haven’t got a clue. Then stumble upon a worthy Soob, one willing to sacrifice His tranny is shot, from lack of lube, but his engine will suffice. A wagon of EA81 vintage, was parted and cut and scrapped Ahh the horror, the frightful visage, his organs in storage slapped The engine went into BOB, to help him pass the SMOG test The other parts as I said were lobed, in storage, to take a rest. To be called on in future need, to replace damaged parts In order to preserve the breed, just like his transplanted heart Well then the tranny decides to die, shifting become a labored task 1st and 2nd grind and cry, 3rd pops out when you go fast. And so is this it for poor BOB, crippled and lame he went. For another year poor BOB, in disuse it was spent. Then in November of 2006, the madness it did start. In the garage for a major fix, and an EJ18 heart. Challenges and trials were unforeseen, to make all work right Weld, Wrench, ULT SOOB in between, asking for help in my plight Adapter problems, flywheels too, lift blocks and the whole mess Clutches dying, wires turned to goo. My wrenching skills did test. Retrofitting everything, that Subaru has made The chassis being the only thing, from 1982 that stayed But now the ballad draws to close, and the end is soon at hand For despite the 9 month full of woes, I have reached the promise land. BOB passed SMOG, dontcha know, and California has certified That his EJ18 hearts good to go, it is complete, truly alive. So as this tale draws to an end, the last I must do Is go to the DMV and 30 dollars spend, to register you know who….

PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS!!!!!!!!!!!   (gratuitous banana dance) You don't realize what this means.... I bought the BRAT in Feb of 2004. I have been trying to SMOG the beast since then. For over 3 years. He first year or so I didn't smog it until Sept b/c the tags were still good. Then I spent a lot of time trying to correct the previous owners mikey rigged emission tricking stuff. Like putting a plate made out of an soda can over the EGR and stuff like that. Finally it was an EA81 engine swap but the tranny died. Then in Nov of 2006 I decided to go with the EJ18 swap and now.... now it's complete. (sigh) BW Today's meaning of BRAT is B.osco's R.eally A.wesome T.ruck. Probably change tomorrow b/c something else is bound to break/melt/short. -
Problem with electrical resolved (burned wire)
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ok no ground on driver's side confirmed. One thing i notices while looking underneath is that my exhaust is blowing right up against the metal heat shield protecting the wires. Very possible the due to the heat build up, the wire plastic is melting and they are shorting out. Will have to let the car a bit before I remove the shielding and take a look. BW -
Problem with electrical resolved (burned wire)
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just finished tracing the hazard circuit and I found out that the wires from the parking light, reverse and hazard all come together in the lighting relay. HMM...... That may be the problem. where is the lighting relay located? Will have to look at it some more. Also can anyone tell me where the reverse light switch is. I think it's hooked up to the EA81 tranny near the driver's side mount. -
Well.. THANKS TO ALL FOR THE IMPUT. My exhaust was exiting really high in the rear of the BRAT and the wires were caught in the blast. When I took off the heat shield, the wires crumpled in my hand exposing 5 bare wires. Lot's of reasons why the shorts /weird light issues were happening. BTW the thing that I learned from this is that when there are multiple systems having problems, ie turn signals, reverse and stop lights, there might be damage to the harness somewhere. OFF TO SMOG tomorrow. Well the problems never ever seem to end. I took some of my lights off to paint the BRAT and now I have some messed up electrical issues. 1) Rear Driver’s side lights will not work. I traced diagrams and I think it’s the ground. Voltage is good to all of the powered wires. Will have to test the ground to see if that’s the one. 2) This one’s the weird one. When the parking lights come on, the reverse light also comes on. This is for the Pass side, b/c of problem 1. When I use the turn signal to the left, the parking light and the reverse light pulse lightly. The right turn signal is dead. Also the front turn signals are not working. The hazard switch flashes the rear pass parking light and reverse light. I think I have traced the problem to the hazard switch. But I am not sure. I will scan in my wiring diagram tracings when I get home from work so you can take a look. Starting to HATE my BRAT again…. BW Ps. Hey I just thought of another meaning for B.R.A.T. B.ound to R.epair A.ll T.hings

I drove to the event on 205/55/16 tires. It put a lot less load on the engine. The actual white tires are 225/75/R16s about 29 inches. Lift is 5 inch. I do have a aftermarket moonroof. Leaks like crazy b/c it was a flat moonroof installed on a round roof. Thanks for the comments. BW

here are some photos of the BRAT at the Drive the Legend car show. Didn't win anything, but drew a lot of attention.

+1 on the roll cage. At least put in some roll protection. Like a square that is crossbraced. It's a lot easier to do now when the thing is apart. 3-4 inch beads and caulk will not protect you when the car rolls. BTW I have some glass from a GL-10 sedan, the ones that are behind the rear door if you need them. BW

Took FrankenBRAt to California SMOG Ref. (PASSED)

Thanks for the tips. I have another appointment w/the SMOG guy on Wed 8/15. Will be going for a pseudo long road trip to the Impreza event this weekend so I will give the denatured alcohol trick a try. Any one have input on the mix levels? BW -
here you go.

I stored the picture in photobucket.com then linked it here.

Well I passed the comprehensive visual inspection. But I failed the emission test. I was not able to do a two speed idle b/c the guy recognized that it was select 4wd. My NOX levels were really high. 15mph is double what it should be and at 25 mph is about 200 over the limit. The ref suggested that I put smaller tires on the car so it doesn't have to work as hard. I have a set of Impreza tires that I will be throwing on and then off to the smog guy again. BW

subyrally's annual frederick cookout!!!
s'ko replied to subyrally's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
hey... I will be in the area on Dec 12-18 think you can hold off on the BBQ until then? But seriously, it would be great to do a winter meet. I will be soobless.. unless I can rent one for the weekend. -
5 inch lift. I realize it's an off size, but that is the size of the steel tubing I found at the metal yard. I did an EJ18 swap once again this project is a tale of what was available for cheap or free. In this case FREE EJ18 w/harness and ECU:banana: . I used 2002 WRX exhaust. I had to modify the cat flanges and the exhaust tubing to make it work. I also had to hammer the crap out of the resonator in the mid pipe to keep it from hitting the driveshaft. Crockettbrat. I take it TOMORROW to the CARB referee and hope for the best. All indications are that it will pass. Since the tags are old on it, I had to get a 1 day moving permit for tomorrow. I plan to take it at midnight for a drive to get the system cleared up. BW
