  1. Ok if the Ford Focus look alike didn't want to make you kill yourself Kia Rio sO in the past, you could look down a row of cars or look around in traffic and be able to spot a soob with ease. Now... i might mistakenly wave to a Rio or a Focus
  2. For those of you who haven't seen it. me thinks it looks like a Ford Focus. and the hood scoop is gone. What's up with that? looks like if I get a newer soob it will be a 2007 or older. BW
  3. I would be using the 2.5 pistons. I have since thought about the project and I will be doing a standard EJ25 shortblock w/EJ22 heads. Lots of guys at nasioc have done this. May possibly take the EJ22 Shortblock and bolt up the EJ18 heads to the just for laughs and giggles. Thanks all for the input. BW
  4. This one should be in a USMB calendar. Looks great!!! BW
  5. Still working on the variables and the measurements. The intake might have to be bolted to an adapter of some sort. The way I figure it. I have the EJ18 heads (as long as they are not damaged) I have a way of getting 2.0 rods for cheap or free, I am getting a 2005 2.5 short block for $140.00 (as long as the cylinder walls are not FUBAR) So 'lego'ing this thing together would probably cost me around $500.00 if I get new pistons. If I have to do machine work to the block and stuff then it will probably be in the 1k range or so. But it would be worth it. Would this work w/just the stock ECU, or would I have to go with engine and fuel management computers? BW
  6. MUHAHAHAHAHAHA..... Ok so I killed my EJ18 in my BRAT. I have lined up another EJ18 that I am going to put in but now that gives me EJ engine parts to play with. So..... here is my theory. EJ25 short block, EJ18 heads, EJ20 pistons and a 2mm head gasket. this should give me 10.88:1 CR. Now it's seeing if the EJ18 heads will bolt to the block. BTW here is another excel calculator for Compression ratios on an EJ motors. Values are in mm. The EJ-CR docs are some info regarding EJ engines. BW EJ-CR1.doc ej-cr2.doc
  7. Found another EJ18 for $100.00 I plan to make a frankenmotor out of the dead one. Maybe 2.5 short block w/Ej18 heads or something to that effect. BW
  8. no i mean the EJ18 motor that I just put in is dead. BW
  9. IT’S DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep. I killed the motor. I made a HUGE mistake of putting Marvel Mystery Oil “GAS TREATMENT” into the engine. Turned the oil into a super thin film and it leaked through all of the seal. I also developed a rod knock. Well time to find a 2.2 engine. *sigh* back to the garage. zzz
  10. I am over there and so is Hocrest, though he doesn't post much here anymore. Like nipper said TRANNY IS THE KEY you might also want to start hoarding parts b/c there were only 15,000 of them some in the US and they are getting rare. Luckly most of the parts are interchangeable w/other EJ cars. I have owned mine for over a year now and had not hand any major problems. In terms of the replacement tranny, a local subaru Guru who works for a Sooby rally team said that I should replace the tranny w/a JDM WRX tranny, not the STI one or the RA geared one. The JDM WRX tranny will work well with the EG33's torque. Enjoy "SUBARU's car of the FUTURE" BW
  11. 5 inch. also what are your thoughts on wheels. note the back wheel is painted white to match old school wagon wheel look. Should I do it all the way around or keep the rims silver? Paintwise I am going to keep the blue color and then diamond plate the bottom half. Wheeling pics will be in next month. The tranny is a stock EA81 4sp d/r. I put a seperate selector for the high/low level. Right now i am having problems with the tranny wanting to slide out of high range when I clutch in. It's not engine pitch that is causing it. It might be the fact that the high/low level needs to have constant pressure. Shifting is also a PITA. The stock shifter has way too much travel. I am working on a short throw shifter. Lastly the 4wd selector needs to be hooked up. The hardest part is that fact that all of these levers are in the same area and are hitting each other.
  12. Just wanted to share this w/fellow old geners
  13. Where is it coming from? when you say funny, do you mean whine, click, rattle, clunk, grind? This might help in getting the problem isolated.
  14. Took it out to the local Friday night Subaru Meet. THere are mostly all WRX's and stuff. But they were impressed with the BRAT here is a video http://s81.photobucket.com/albums/j208/boswan/BRAT%20PROJECT/?action=view&current=bratdrive.flv
  15. Took it for a short drive to the bank. I think I will have to rework the shifter to make it a shorter throw b/c it’s a PITA to get it into reverse. First is also hard. I really didn’t want to run it too hard b/c I am still shaking things down bit overall I LOVE THE POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got the alternator wiring figured out. The post terminal goes to the positive terminal of the battery The Thick white wire goes to the BRAT harness. I took the black red wire and also plumbed it to the positive terminal of the battery and the headlight brightened. I removed the positive terminal and the car stayed running. BW
  16. I am having trouble charging my battery. I have a 95 EJ18. Alternator has a plug coming out of the side w/two wires. A thick white red one and a black red one. It also has the screw on terminal. My BRAT is suppose to have three wires going to the alternator. One that is thick and it’s white red, and two white ones. After looking into my engine bay, I could only find a thick white red and a thin white red one. Ok…. So from looking at the diagrams for both cars. I took a outside piece of thick wire from the terminal and connected it straight to the battery. (this was part of the old EJ harness) I took the BRAT thick white red one and the thin white red one and connect it to the thick white red one from the EJ plug. That leaves the black red one. It says that it’s an ECU wire. Which wire should I connect this to? BW
  17. 6 day bump Some guys came over yesterday and we accomplished a ton. Brakes are hooked up and bled. Exhaust is almost done. Camber is still screwy but it's still somewhat drivable.. Here are pics CAmber exhaust welding BTW OBS seat are a pretty easy mod w/a welder and a drill. Take the front mounting tabs and bend them 90 degrees. The inside tab should line up with the stock EA81 mounting hole. The rear inside, you need to drill a hole through the tranny tunnel and used a washer on the other side to keep it from pulling through. Rear outside tab will be about an 3/4 of an inch off of the floor board. i used a square piece of tubing to make a space and then drill another hole through the floorboard. I took a large washer and steel plates and I secured it with a 12mm bolt. The front outside tab is about an 1/2 from the stock mounting hole. I took a piece of flat stock and drilled a hole on one end and and lined the other side up with the mounting tab. Secured the piece of stock into the stock hole and then welded the other side up. Total time 15 mins. Let on my list of things before the car is drivable. Is the exhaust. In order to make the car perfect, I have to hook up the gauges and make my 4wd selector. Otherwise it drivable. BW
  18. Try a snowcat/snow mobile since you are in Alaska. I am building a Doran. I just got the plans yesterday. it's a huge PITA b/c the way the plans are drawn they don't show your how long things are and there isn't a bill of materials. So I have to pretty much review the entire plans to know how much metal I need to buy. I guess that's a benefit cause then I will know exactly how things are put together. BW
  19. With the slot collar fix. I was getting some play from the bolt that secures it to the shifter rod. I took a 8mm bolt and some rubber hose. Trimmed it down and tapped it into the collar and it works really well. BW

First welcome to the Board. OBS=Outback Sport. more specifically the Impreza w/the higher suspension. For the info about the 1980's soobs spend sometime looking at the homepage of this forum http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/ Then go to the 80's pages and look to your hearts content. The wagon style that you are referring to I think is the EA81 wagon. more round than the Loyale that you had. These cars are super easy to work on and this site is really a great place to learn. For more older soob repairs surf around the older generation forum. Have fun and good luck w/your build. BW
  21. Ok Shifter solved. I just took out my grinder and cut a bigger hole in the floor board. I might even completely get rid of the tranny hump b/c the 5 inch lift. Brakes are almost solved. I needed to get an adapter for my brake lines. I got two make ends that needed to be joined. NAPA has it. it's a 10mmX1.0 pitch fitting. Part # 7934-A. So now I just need to get the 4wd shifter working and I will be able to roll it. BW:banana:
  22. size of that Ferrari motor that you pictured. So we are looking at 5 feet of engine. Then tranny then of you want to put AWD..... Stick w/a 4 banger. Otherwise Keep the ideas coming. BW
  23. Update and help needed Last weekend had one HUGE victory and a bunch of setbacks. I was not able to work on it at all until Sunday afternoon. VICTORY was that it was able to move under it’s own power. I drove it down my driveway and parked it on the street so I could clean out the garage and organize things. So here are the setbacks…. 1) The exhaust needs to be re-worked. (still) 2) Shifter needs to be re-worked. I can’t hit 1st and reverse. 3) Battery that I had for it was determined to be a bad battery So I have set a tentative date of April 13th as the launch date of the FrankenSoob. Here are the things that still need to be ironed out besides the above-mentioned. 1) Front brakes lines extended and hook up. 2) Brake system filled up and bleed 3) Camber corrected (so it doesn’t look like this \---/ 4) OBS seats installed, (custom bracket time) 5) 4WD shifter installed 6) Oil Pressure, Temp, Volts gauges hooked up 7) Tach hooked up I only have about 30 hours of time to work on it in the next few weeks. Will post pictures and videos soon. BW
