Rust-o-leum applicance epoxy. Home depot, 12 bucks or so a can. BW

980,001 things left to do.... So I finished up the coolant lines. Had to use some metal tubing to make it all work. The 5 inch drop made it really difficult to find a pre-bent piece that worked. So I used a piece tail pipe from the EA81 motor. It's a temporary fix. Plan to get some stainless tubes in the future. I also have to re-work the exhaust. The EJ18 headers join at the Y and the y ends pointing towards the front wheel sidewall. I had to make a 90 degree fitting to get it to point backwards to the rear. Anyways the angle of the fitting is wrong so the cat angles downward instead of straight back. Also I have to work out the wiring again. Ok so the terminal on the distributor, where is that suppose to hook up? I figures it's a negative polarity end. I guess the reason I am asking is b/c when I disconnect the battery, the car dies, that make me thing that I am not getting any electricity for the car to run. I am afraid that my battery won't get charged. Lastly I was lazy when I wired up the ECU power wires b/c I just took it straight from the battery and the fuel pump is wired up so that when you key on it turns on. So when I keyed off, the car would want to run but eventually dies b/c of lack of fuel. I guess I need to make sure that the ECU is not powered on all of the time. There are some problems associated with the lift. I need to get longer brake lines b/c of the 5 inch lift. I also need to rework the 4wd selector linkage b/c the shifter now hits it. One mod that I am really happy about is what I did to reduce shifter slop. I cut the notch like it says in the USRM, but then I took some gas line and used a 8mm bolt. I put the bolt through the line and then trimmed down the line so that it barely fit into the shifter collar/shifting shaft. Tapped it in w/a hammer, tightened it down and no more shifter bobbing around like crazy when the car is in gear. Last thing that I am pretty stoked about is the fact that I put the BRAT in gear and cranked the engine and it lurched forward. I was originally afraid that I didn't get the tranny/clutch right. So all indication are that I will be driving it by next weekend. This weekend is my birthday and my wife has plans for that. BW

I usually use Rust-o-leom applicance epoxt paint. This perfect for our wagon wheels b/c it comes glossy white. The other colors are glossy black and almond. (gee go figure. The three most popular applicance colors) Anywho, it's designed to be durable and fairly scratch resistant.

There are some pics in my photobucket account. it's under Boswan. For the most part, the hardest thing is the wiring and that usually take the collective mind (USMB) to sort out. BW

Yep. Let's see... B/C of the lift, I need to make longer front brake lines, rework the 4wd selector, possibly rework the top strut mounts to correct the camber, Then I need to retro-fit my OBS seats. Hook up the tach/temp/oil gauge, hook up the check engine light, make sure the CEL light stays off. Then its off to the DMV for a temporary moving permit and then to the SMOG ref to get the car inspected and approved When its all done though i will have a part from almost every generation of Subaru. EJ18 (Impreza/GC) BRAT w/4spd D/R Twin stick mod for 2wd low option. (EA81) EA82 front crossmember w/Power steering rack (EA82) XT6 hubs, (XT6) 2002 Impreza wheels (Impreza/GD) OBS Seats (Impreza/GF) Ignitor (Legacy) Outback front struts (Legacy Outback) All I need now is something from an SVX, a 70's subaru, a 360, a Justy, a Forester and a Baja. I also figured I am gonna call it BOB the FRANKENBRAT. BOB b/c the license plate is #BOB###. BW

Well looks like we have a crop of EJ swaps being completed. I just started it up. Attempt number one was yesterday where I tried w/a friend of mine. I got the fuel pump working and it started up w/starter fluid. I was not able to get it run w/o it so that was slightly disappointing. We determined that we the fuel tank was low. I guess a bunch of fuel evaporated while it was sitting. Attempt number two was today. Put some fuel in the tank and got tried it again. This time it would start up, but wouldn't idle. After fidgeting around with some of the connections and thinking a bit, I thought hmm.. let me hook the air flow sensor. Well it lit up and idle. :headbang: :headbang: Now to iron out the million little things and put the interior back together. BW

Wasn't there a widows board also? Hmm seems to have expired. How about a new section here for widows? BW -

right on. Looks like we are the only two here that are going. I might be able to convince a friend to come and drive my wagon and I will take the BRAT. BW -
motor swap is illegal smog-wise. You cannot back-date motors. There is also the problem that the 82 car had a non-turbo motor and will be smogged at the DMV as such. Not sure what will happen when the turbo is put in and they smog it. A motor swap would be a lot less work than a tranny swap. so to the DMV. (opps, I just threatened a state employee) BW

Took my wife through some desert washes. mostly dry river beds w/lots sand and stuff at the bottom. almost exactly at the middle point, she looks at me and says..."are we done yet?" I showed her on the map that no matter which direction we went we would have to go the same distance. She was not happy at all. I figured that if I want to go wheel, I either need to take a friend along of set her up on a spa date or something like that. BW

Right on. What if you took a FWD tranny and made it a mid engine set up. I was thinking of making a Doran. http://www.rqriley.com/doran.html Might even modify the rear wheel to make it electric powered and make a hybrid.

EJ22 Brat Swap, couple questions for those who have done it
s'ko replied to 86BRATMAN's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
If you are going to lift it, you might as well use a EA82 engine crossmember. Just use the lift blocks to make the two work. There is a thread here describing it. BW -
Glad to hear that you are ok. I have had a Heep going 70. Downhill with a tailwind drafting a tractor trailer......

Well haven't posted it in a long time about this. But I have some success. I used a bit of starter fluid and got it burped a bit. So once I get the fuel system finished it will run. Problem I just notice while trying to install the exhaust is that I need a spacer so that the headers will bolt up. The last thing it to get the radiator lines set up right. They are a bit pinched. I think I want A BRAT
s'ko replied to bglombowski's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
There is a Turbo EA81 Brat made. Not sure of the years but it's pretty rare. They came w/the auto tranny and 3.7 rear end. Good luck in finding one. BW -

mid april works a lot better. I am having problems with the camber and I have decide to go with custom control arm. Have a friend who can TIG helping me out. We are kicking around some pretty sweet ideas here in SOCAL. Like long travel rear trailing arms and stuff. Most of our terrain here is rolling dunes and desert so articulation and low gearing is not a must. Suspension travel for Bajaing is what is needed. BW -
Noah did you ever ger this issue resolved? I have the same problem. \--/ front wheel. BRAT EJ18, XT6 hubs, Outback struts custom 5 in lift Impreza RWD axles When I made the blocks I off-set the strut mounts. The struts were a PITA in get mounted to the hubs. I was thinking of adding about and inch to the control arm. Let me know what you have done. BW

Look for the tire calculator thread. to get sizes. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=72052

It might rub the back. i tried a set of 225/75/16 for my lifted BRAT and it touched the torsion bar arm. Good luck BW

Brumby conversion: EJ22, hybrid AWD center lock, SUCCESS!!!
s'ko replied to Phizinza's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I am having a little trouble understanding what you did. There might be something lost in the Australian English - American English reading. From the pictures it you put the T near the gas tank. What do you mean by the "rear guard" From the pics it looks like the pump is in the stock location. is there also a pump near the engine? Anyways CONGRATS on your start up. I hope to post about my start up this weekend. -

Guess what's coming back? 1982 Subaru Brat
s'ko replied to Sweet82's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
they are popping up on e-bay. Looks like they are about $140 or so. Time to approach my wife with the..."honey.... you know how my birthday is right around the corner" line. RE: Reagan driving a brat. I heard it's a 1st Gen BRAT. a friend of mine worked for the company that restored it. He couldn't get any pictures out or their shop. I will take a Road trip to Reagan's ranch and take pics and do a write up for the board. BW
