and a drill and grinder.

So things are looking really good for the 24th. I got the headers from Garage Tuning. I am getting axles from Wan Lin and the cat back WRX exhaust from a dude on NASIOC. I need an ignitor, but I have a guy tracking one down for me. I also need to get longer shocks for the back. I plan to get some fuel injection hoses today and install the fuel pump and rehose the carby lines. In terms of the lift. The rear lift blocks are still being finished and then installed. BW

Anybody near Costa Mesa CALI want a 86 3at coupe? $125

congrats. Hey if you want to make it 4wd, I have a FT d/r tranny, that we can slap in there. You will need to find a 3.7 rear tranny though as I am keeping the LSD unit for myself. come to my BBQ. See it in the meet and greet forum. BW -
Please Read! EJ swap write-up: ver. 2.0, now in .pdf form

Not sure of this is something that you want to add or consider, but I used my stock EA81 radiator on my EJ swap. I cut a small piece of the old hose and slipped it over the collar and the EJ hose fit nicely. The hose clamp tightened it up well. I have yet to turn on the car, so we'll see how the pressure holds. For the bottom, I needed a longer hose w/a 90 degree bend to have it fit the collar. This is mainly b/c of the lift. I went to a parts shop and searched through their radiator hose section and found a hose that was close to what I needed. BW -

yeah 5 inch lift. I have to get it done so no go for me and wheeling in february. Will take pics and stuff. BW -
I am hosting a wrenching day for people at my place. I should also have the finishing touches on my EJ-BRAT. There are already a bunch of IMP/WRX people coming, mostly those who are intrigued w/the idea of an EJ powered BRAT. Any old schoolers out there who would like to represent? I usually have a BBQ and people bring their projects as well so any who is willing to lend a hand is welcome as well. 2615 curtis ave, redondo beach, 90278 310-292-5258 BW

I was considering a hatch. I say one in the area w/a blown HG for 200 bucks. It would be really easy to fix. Informal talks with my team have narrowed the vehicle choice to either a subaru b/c of my knowledge of the car and the fact that most team mates own soob or a honda b/c the guy who owns the flatbed truck is familiar with them. Both cars are desirable b/c of the lego like characteristics in terms of upgrading. I would hate to see a hatch get killed. but then again, the hatch would have a 5 point cage installed afterwards so it would make a great track or offroad beater. We'll see how it goes. THanks for the support and encouragement. BW

Congrats on your TURBO. I have seen only on in the area and it belongs to the Subaru Mechanic. I am on Redondo Beach. If you need parts let me know. I am in the process of doing some major retrofitting to my BRAT so I have a bunch of parts left over. BTW I plan to do a get together in about three weeks or so to celebrate the BRAT moving off on it's own. Probably turn it into an install meet /BBQ. If you are going to run 29-30's I can help you with the lift blocks. Will PM you w/my number. BW

so just to verify.... EA81 chassis, EA82 Crossmember, EA81 4spd d/r tranny, XT6 control arms and radius rod will work with Imp FWD axles. BW
-
Take a look underneath your car. You need to put lift blocks under the engine crossmember, the radius rod mount, the carrier bearing, the torsion bar in the rear and then make something to lower the rear diff. There also needs to be a spacer for the front struts. You can either get longer shocks in the rear or make a spacer there too. basically you are creating a spacer between all of the major components and the body. It's possible to do the lift w/o removing the engine. You do have to unbolt the crossmembers. BW

RE using the EJ hubs. I already have the XT6 hubs in place. I test fitted an axle from my Impreza AWD and the outer side worked, but the inner side is too big. So if I can find an axle that has the 23 spline DOJ cup, it should work right? I mean the hubs are al the same right? BW
-
Length should not be that bad b/c I am running it with a lift. Will legacy 2wd axles work? BW
-
Ok, I have done some research and I am trying to get something straight before I start ripping apart axles. I did a 5 lug swap on my BRAT. I put in the EA82 crossmember, control arms, and XT6 hubs. I have my 4spd D/R BRAT tranny. 1) Does anyone know what the spline count of a XT6 axle is? 2) IIRC the spline count for a non-turbo EA82 is the same as the BRAT's. So if the spline count on the above it not the same as the BRAT's could I just swap DOJ cups from a non-turbo car to make it work? 3) Does anyone know if I can take an EJ axle and replace the entire DOJ joint to make it work? Thanks BW
-
As everyone is saying, just go the lift block route. You have to do the lift block b/c it's got independent axles. A suspension lift will only work so much before you tear apart your boots. Usually suspension lifts done by cranking up the front height adjustment and putting Honda Accord springs in the rear or something like that. If you want real lift, go with the lift blocks. good luck. BW

If you are mechanically inclined you can stuff the GL tranny into your Forester. The reverse is being done when people put the newer motors into the older bodies. The hardest part would be figuring out the driveshaft fitment. The rear differential would also have to match the tranny's drive ratio. Ask around in the retro forum. BW

swaping my 85 hatch driveline into 78 brat
s'ko replied to [HTi]Savage's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Go to a metal warehouse and ask if you can look for remnants or scrap. I got enough 5X2 metal to make my lift kit for about 40 bucks. BW -
swaping my 85 hatch driveline into 78 brat
s'ko replied to [HTi]Savage's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
With the lift blocks you can accomodate the width difference. I am putting an EA82 crossmember into my BRAT and it worked out fine. The way I did it was to make the lift blocks and secure it to the wider crossmember. Then take the narrower crossmember and lay it on top. I am not sure if I am describing this right, but you need to flip the EA71 crossmember so that the mounting holes are over each other. so rear holes are over each other and the front holes are over each other. Then clamp or tack weld the crossmember in place and drill your hole in the lift block. For mounting purposes I had to taper one side of the lift block so that I could get a wrench into it to mount it to the frame. http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j208/boswan/IMG_0078.jpg http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j208/boswan/IMG_0079.jpg http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j208/boswan/IMG_0076.jpg -
lookie here http://24hoursoflemons.com/index.html Those of you in Northern Cali/Nevada should get a team together. I am forming a team here w/some guys. Probably not going to be a soob but I will have a soob as a support vehicle. Hope to see someone there. BW

Engine swap w/stock EA tranny is an option however the EJ motor would probably kill the EA tranny. There is a thread here of someone was combining a Outback Sport w/a BRAT http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=34445&highlight=brat It's been in the works for almost two years now. The drivetrain might go in a little easier if you make a subframe that bolts to the EA mounting points and then bolt the EJ parts to the subframe. I put a EA82 crossmember w/PS to my BRAT. I used the lift block as an adapter b/c the mounting holes for the two are different. Good luck BW

EA-EJ Convertion, Removing old stuff? Wiring FSM? Battery Location?
s'ko replied to yegoshin's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I am also doing an EJ swap on a BRAT. Those solenoids/vacumm things are for the feedback carb system so you can toss them. for the battery, I was planning on placing it in the bed behind on the passenger side. I have to keep the charcoal canister where it is b/c the car has to be inspected for SMOGing I have a printout of the wiring, but I am having issues w/my scanner. Give me a PM and I can snail mail it to you. BW
