flywheel adapting. Well I am not sure if this has been covered but I just took a crack at modifying my EA81 flywheel. So far so good. I was skeptical at first.. but when I test fitted the EA flywheel, it slips right onto the crank shaft. It fits nice and snug. I actually had to use a bar to pop it off. So the crank shaft keeps it centered. The holes on the EA flywheel are too small for the EJ flywheel bolts. I took a green grinding bit for my rotary tool and hit the holes. It's actually really easy to do. After doing about 1/2 of the holes I took it out to my EJ. Based on what I find, the diameter of the EJ Crank shaft holes is smaller then the EA81. I plan to ream the holes a bit more oval towards the center of the flywheel. Is this what other people had to do? Anywho. Just thought I would cover this bit as people have raised concerns about the DIY flywheel mod. BW

I meant the bolts that connect the drive shaft to the rear diff. BW

Check to see if your drive shaft is tight. I had some buzzing when it was loose and would vibrate as I approached freeway speeds.

I took my OBS out into the dune at Pismo Beach. Remember to air down to about 15 psi or so and then keep your momentum up. Since you have low clearance, bring some boards and something to dig with. Getting stuck will most likely be caused by being high centered. At Pismo early morning driving is the best time b/c of dew keeps the sand moist. Keep on the firm stuff and away from the powdery stuff. You also need smooth acceleration. If you are duning, try to get an idea of how the winds are blowing. Dunes have steep dropoff on their lee side. Just use you common sense and when in doubt scout it out. The most important part is stay away from salt water. It's really bad for your car. If you can't resist, make sure you wash the entire underside of your car afterwards, I mean really really wash it out. Have fun and don't be afraid of the skinny pedal. BW.

ID plate said it was 77. Dash is badly cracked. Will get the light buckets BW -
Found a 1977 BRAT in the local pap. They want $1000 to take it out of their yard. door panels, roof liner and rear liner are in great shape. Seats are messed up. Disty, intake manifold is gone. All bed molding is there. I can go there and take parts for people. It will be at cost just pay for the part and shipping. Depending on how many requests I get I will divide the $2.00 entry fee. I would love to help preserve a bit of history. send me an e-mail at yahoo. Boswan2001 is my user name. BW

Started out as a BRAT swap thread, but people seem interested in the twin stick idea so I retitled it. Good news about the timing belt gear. Upon further inspection the gear itself it ok, the metal rim that helps keep the belt on was the part that got mashed. Going back to the twin stick and running it in low gear on the fly. Has one had bad results from going into low gear on the fly? Like I said when I clutched in 4th and pulled it into 4wd lo, it just shifted and the RPMs went up a bit but other than that there were no bad results. BW

Here is a quick write up of the twin stick on an EA81, the dual range is located at the front of the tranny on the driver's side. The 4wd is located near the gear shifter pivot point. There is a plate there w/4 bolts that covers this area. The two systems are connected by a small rod that exits the front of the plate area and connects to a rod. Here is the hi lo rod disconnected at the shifter. I punched out the pin on the collar holding the rod coming from the plate area. I actually had to saw the pin in half b/c it was hitting the tranny housing and would not go through all of the way. Once the collar was removed from the small rod, I reconnected it to the hi lo shifter and I welded a bolt to a metal rod. The bolt was then secured to the collar w/a nut. yeah the welds look crappy... but it holds. Here is a video of the shifter engaging. http://s81.photobucket.com/albums/j208/boswan/?action=view¤t=MOV00310.flv There is a bend in the end of the rod that goes into the cabin. The idea is to place it right next to the 4wd shifter rod and then secure it so that it moves forward and back. This was done a spare tranny so I am not sure if it is "sensitive" I do know that with the currently d/r tranny in the BRAT I was able to shift into 4th and clutch in and then pull the 4wd lever to lo and it would engage w/o any issues. This was going about 20 or so. Well hope that helps. BW

Here is the idea 82 BRAT, EJ18, 4sp D/R tranny w/2wlo mod. EA82 engine crossmember w/4 inch lift. Re-drilled Jeep Wagoneer rims and 28-29 inch tires. I completed the twin stick mod and will post pictures. Picked up the engine today but I found out that the oil pan and the pass side timing gear/pulley was damaged. Here's to hoping that I can get everything done by the end of year.

Ok so I was originally going to put an EA82 Crossmember into my BRAT for the power steering while doing an EJ swap but the guy I am getting the engine from is also giving me the EJ engine crossmember. The original idea was to put a 4 inch lift and have the lift block act as an adapter. Once the crossmember is in this is essentially a 5 lug swap. I have yet to measure things out with the EJ piece so it's more theory. My concern is what axles I will need or do I have to custom make them. Also all of the 5 lug swaps out there are using XT6 rear parts. Can legacy/impreza parts be used instead, as there are more common. BW

It depends on what Generation do you want? EA82 cars are not as abundant. EJ cars are more abundant. It all depends. If you want an EJ car, sell it and use the money to get one. Otherwise keep it and have it shipped. Atleast you know the history of the car. Good luck the move and enjoy the better weather. Oh.. watch out for August. it's hot and humid. BW

woohooo.. Source a L 5 spd tranny and rear diff for FREE. All I have to do is weld some stuff for a guy doing a RHD conversion on a L. He's dropping a EJ22T into a L.

what time does the drive start? I have church Sunday mornings until about 12:00 or so. Let me know. I can bring some people down. BW -
yeah that's what I figured. Does anyone have a chart of gear ratios from the various EJ years? For some reason there seem to be a lot of Legacys going to the PAP and not imprezas. I have seen some 5spd awd Legs there so that my by inexpensive source for a tranny. I guess I need to replace my clutch anyways so I might as well do both at the same time. BW

Any thoughts here? I have a 5 spd imp that i has a damaged tranny. Let a buddy drive it and he wasn't use to the short throw shifter. Down shifter from 5th to 2th on the freeway. I have a GL-10 tranny and LSD diff in the garage. 1) What are benefits of going from the stock Imp gearing to the GL-10 gear? 2) Besides that adapter plate and wiring a cable clutch what else needs to be modded. Speedo cable or anything else? BW
