http://www.rqriley.com/doran.html it's based off of a Subaru EA81 engine and tranny. Just wondering if anyone has tried to do it. I am sure that it's a pretty good candidate for an EJ swap as well. Depending on when I finish the BRAT EJ swap/build up, I am considering doing this as my next project since I will have a spare EA81 lying around. BW

Southwest Subaru meet 2/15/07 MLK jr weekend

What are some of the problems that I might expect w/a clutch? I just installed a new one and I haven't had much problems w/wheeling in the old one. BW -
I am almost done w/my brat bumper. Will take some pics and post it tonight. BW

I saw these boards at an sand rail shop that looked like extra thick snowboards w/bolts in them. The concept was that once you are stuck, you stick em in front of your tire and drive up on them. The bolts were there for traction. They act as a ramp that should get you back on top of the sand. Dude wanted like $150.00 for them. I figure go to Home Despot and get some 1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood and then throw in some bolts it. Or air down and keep momentum up and don't spin yourself down to the frame.

If you have space for welding, go down to harborfreight or the like and get yourself one of those wire flux core welders when they are on sale. (Usually 150 to 100.00) and also pick up a grinder. Find a steel yard and ask for the remnants pile and get a bunch of steel to practice on. Design a project, candle holder, shelf bracket, fog light bar/bracket. Then go to town. Practice until you feel like you can lay a good bead and then make your own rack and bumper. Benefits... 1) you learn a new skill 2) You can make it anyway you want. The first time you make a good solid weld, a light bulb will come on in your head and you will realize that you can now join metal. You are no longer bound by the limits of bolts and nuts, screws, rivets and epoxy/jb weld. You can fuse metal. muhahahahaha... oops sorry... back to the list. 3) Cost of paying someone to do it for your would have bought you the welder. 4) Join the brotherhood of eternally sunburned. (welding puts out UV rays)

BBQ and wrenching party in Redondo Beach Sat 23rd

Fluid drains are for my neighbors garage. mine is already messed up beyond hope. Have fun at the wedding. BW -
Not that there are many people here in the Los Angeles area... but here goes anyways *************************************** So I need to do a clutch job on my OBS. Give me a hand and use my garage for whatever install you need to do. Or just come and have some burgers and kelbasa. (I don't do no stinking hotdogs) and hang w/soobie fanatics. I am in Redondo Beach near Artesia and Inglewood. 2615 Curtis Ave Redondo Beach, CA 90278. 310-292-5258 Bosco Start time will be around 10:00 or so. Will fire up the grill at around 12:00. This is an small townhouse like apt complex so I can probably have about 10 people or so milling around. I may be able to convince one of my neighbors to let us use their garage for some clean install/maintenance work (no oil changes or stuff that may involved fluids or leave a stain) I plan to start the clutch job early so I will mostly need help matting the tranny and engine together. Have basic tools, jackstands and ramps. I am a pretty experienced Soobie wrencher (cause I have an old BRAT I have been play with) Oh I also have a welder so, can do some exhaust work or just teach you how to weld. Let me know who is planning to come and if you need to do some work. Will provide soft drinks, water, aforementioned meat items. BYOB if you have to but please no drunked wrenching. bring the G/F spouse and keep my wife company... or atleast so they can start a support group for spouses of subaru addicts. Anyways see ya there Bosco

Mountain Biker--- Thanks for the info. BTW have you been down the pumpkin patch trail? What is the terrain like and can a stock OBS w/4 people make it to the patch? Are there any other trails that you can think of that would be good to drive down? I have about 5 hours or so of time. All---- Anyone up on San Francisco or NV willing to meet up? Logistically I think it might be best to stay the first night at a motel. It would be easier to rally up at a location with a street address instead of trying to find each other at night in the middle of the desert. BW -

Bought this book called Guide to Southern California Backroads and 4-Wheel drive trails. They have about 20 trail in the Anza Borrego area. 6 are marked easy. Looks like it's pretty close to San Diego too. I am going to go the palm springs for a marriage retreat at the end of the month. I can go there and scout it out. BW -
scored 8 inch Bosch Rallye lights for $10.00
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
opps here is a picture. Note how huge they are. -
So I on my way home from work and the gas light came on in my car. Pulled off at the nearest exit and went looking for a gas station. I noticed a off-road store near the exit. After gasing up stopped in to take a look. I notice this basket in the back of the store and buried amongst a bunch of stuff was two sets of Bosch Rallye lights. I just need to get a 150wt H3 bulb for them and make a bracket and its good to go. can't wait to see how that look on the BRAt.

You might have good luck at small claims court. not sure of that limits in your state but in California it's $5000. No jury, don't necessarily need lawyers. Just get the info from the Dodge dealers head mechanic and have him sign it along with his credentials. Tire company can scream all they want that they didn't cause the damage, but the company who designed it should have more weight in terms of what caused the damage. The argument that the owner should know is not the valid but it's more of a diversion. You went to a tire shop b/c you needed a service that they provide. You expect them to be experts in changing tires and doing it right. Like someone said, did they replace it without telling you that it was the wrong size? Even then they are the presumed experts in the field. It's like a tow truck towing an awd subaru by two wheels due to a parking issue or whatever. They would be liable for any damage caused by their actions. with small claims court you don't have to incur the cost of litigation and if the insurance company get litigated, it will cost them more to fight it than to pay you. Good luck and keep us posted. BW

who are you/what do you do tally and comments
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
this was from that thread that I started just for laughs and giggles a while ago. Teacher was put with students, engineers w/techincal On thing I do need to change is the mechanical field b/c anyone who owns a ea body car is a mechanic:drunk: I just thought it was interesting results. I can understand students owning soobs b/c the are inexpensive and easy to maintain, but IT people and technical people, managers and stuff. People who make good money, owning soobs especially the older soobs. So this thing goes beyond practicality and into obsession. (duh...) I guess this is sort of a who are we and what do we stand for moment... (patriotic music wafts in the background) As a whole I think that everyone on the board is a fine example of humanity. Haven't met a person yet that I had a problem with. so to USMB. anywho, back to work. -
mm... I spent some time tallying the results so far. Top occupation here is student w/27. 2) Mechanical field 23 3) Techincal field 20 4) Computer field 17 5) retail/service field 15 6) production/construction 14 7) other (non listed retired) 11 8) drivers 8 9) Military/govt 7 10) Desk Jockey 7 So if we were to make a society of subaru owners... we'd have a lot of people walking around with their noses in their computers wondering what to do. Good thing there are alot of people keeping the older soobs in running order. Of course the desk jockeys would be behind the scenes controling everything. BW

gonna drive the 82 home...
s'ko replied to jeep5.9litre's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
really depends on the condition that car is in. I mean if it is running well there is no reason that it shouldn't make it. One think that you might want to bring is a spare fuel pump. That part goes out you are stuck. the EA81 will be no speed demon so it's better to take it nice and steady than try to go fast. stay around 60-65 and that should keeps the RPMs low and the engine happy. Anza Borrego looks nice. If not too may people chime in from the AZ and NM and Nevada, maybe we can all meet at Pismo? Then we can get the Reno crew and SF crew. That's great camping and fun dune driving. Granted it might be crazy busy. BW -
So had this GL-10 that I scrapped and I had the trunk left over. so with a welder and a butt load of scrap steel around you can built anything.. Took two 2 inch angle pieces and welded then to the rear of the trunk lid. Took a long 1/2 square tube and welded it between the two angle pieces. This formed the anchoring point for the rear of the table. Made some braces out of 1" x 1/2" solid bar and then secured them to the 2x4 in my garage. Placed the trunklid on top and then used a c-clamp to secure the braces to the rear bar. Weld to pieces together. Then weld the front of the braces to the trunk lid. I made the table about hip height so it's comfortable to work with while standing up. Will take pictures tomorrow b/c it's took dark. welders rule.... BW

Not really. 390 wheels are actually going to take a 15.5 inch tire. Good luck trying to find those. BW

Mike, if you need some parts let me know. I have two 1 gen brats in the PAP yards. BW -
Yep we’ve talked about it… we even tried to get one organized and two people showed up. But how about January 15th, MLK Jr. Weekend. That gives us about 4 months to work out the kinks. And maybe give me enough time to complete my EJ BRAT project. Depending on who responds, we can determine the location that is central to everyone planning to come. Grand Canyon would be a good spot, maybe Vegas but it can get pretty busy on a holiday weekend there. Also please reply with what type of meet you would like to have. Gathering/meet and greet, road drive, trail drive, offroad drive, install-fest, all the above. Please add other interests. I mean heck.. maybe other people would like to do underwater Subaru basket weaving. I hope to have a place set by the end of September and some rough idea of what we will do for the two days that we are there. Please respond to this thread with name, location and type of meet or activity. 1) s’ko, Los Angeles. ATA (all the above) especially the basket weaving… 2) SuBrat84, Tucson, AZ 3) mislesxcracker, Los Angeles 4) Mountainbiker, Sonoma, CA, Offroad drive, meet-n-greet, BBQ. Anza Borrengo 5) ryker, Anza 6) YellowSub, Tucson, AZ meet-n-greet & food, 7) Beataru, Scottdale, AZ,

THanks for the post. I have a buddy who told me that there are two 1st Gen Brats in the PAP and an XT6. Best of all it's a 1/2 price day. I do plan to go there early in the morning and then returning in the afternoon. E-mail me at boswan2001(at)yahoo(dot)com. Please title the e-mail "PAP parts" and then put a contact number there. I am going to route the e-mails to me cell phone and it will filter correctly if you title it "PAP parts" I will call you back w/parts and I can even take a picture and send it back to your e-mail. Aren't camera phones sweet? Anywho time to go to bed... BW

for those who asked, I found that 3/8 drill bit is the same size as the EJ flywheel bolt. Also an easy way to do the flywheel is to take a long bolt and put it on a vice and place the EA flywheel underneath and the EJ flywheel on top. Take out a drill and some machining oil and then have at it. As you complete each hole, take a flywheel bolt and place it into the hole to keep the flywheels from shifting. This would howl really well on a drill press, but I don't have one. I busted two drill bits doing this.. BW

Do I need to have the EA81 flywheel modified to XT6 specs or can I just have them turn it down for a fresh surface? Numbchux- CONGRATs on getting it running@!!!! gEt the clutch replaced and do some front wheel burnouts.
