So the day has finally come. The cruddy clutch that was in my BRAT gave out. I have hoping to get a little more use out of it, but no such luck. It's stuck in fourth. So getting a brand new clutch kit for $102.00 and gonna slap that sucker in. Ok maybe not slap as it will probably take me twice as long to do this b/c it's my first time. I am going for the engine removal method. I plan to re-seal oil pan and the valve covers and adjust the valves. Anything else I need to do? Also what other parts do you anticipate I need. Like exhaust gaskets or something like that. I did soak the exhaust bolts w/some wd-40, hopefully they won't break off. wish me luck. BW

That's what happened. I took the case apart and gave the gears a WD-40 bath. I looked at the contacts and it was all corroded. Cleaned the contacts re-wired the contacts. Light works. Woohoo.. door goes up, door goes down, -

I bought a the one from Radio Shak that DTDP or whatever the term is. it was roughly 5.00 and it looks the same as the diagram. My only problem is I think the wiring to the motor is bad. Light turns on, but door doesn't move. I am going to try hot wiring the motor make sure that is the problem. Anyone know where to get replacement motors? Last resort would be to get a long cable control and open and close the door that way. BW -

I went to a meet in my BRAT and they were tripping over the fact that I had the spare in my hood. I get good responses from the New Gen crowd at the meets I go to. Then again I have always been an oddball. Went to an I-Club meet once in my OBS all dirty and w/KC's on my luggage rack. BW -
Southwest meet, anyone?

That's cause we don't run FART CAN exhausts. Well after January I can devote more time to get this organized. BW -

just called a dude from a company called Blindfold tours. He would consider taking us up to an area near bryce canyon on the Utah side. There is a meadow up there that we can camp at. Then there are lots of trails that we can hit around that area. He is not set on a price but he is willing to do some research to see if we need permits from the US Forest service etc. He said that terrain would vary from forest road to sand to slick rock. Want to form a committee to get this off of the drawing board and into action? Willing to help, but maybe a little limited due to wedding plans and such. BW oh... one more note. Spoke to Fiance/future wifey about this trip. She expressed interest but was concerned about the group being rowdy. Told her that peeps here are not like a bunch of uneducated gearheads that cuss and rant and rave with every word. but I do plan to make this a family trip. Ok so maybe hte uneducated is right.. hehe -

Air filter clogged in two weeks. EA81.
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmm.. So my roommate was messing around with the soob and he noticed that the EGR valve was blocked with a piece aluminum. Someone took a soda can and cut it out and blocked up the EGR valve port. With the Accel or whatever I did recently the power increased and the hole developed in aluminum. This may explain the increased in debris in my air filter. He also noted a huge increase in power with the strip removed. He speculates that they did this to cheat smog. 1) How does the EGR system work? Obviously there is stuff that is suppose to move through it b/c it suddenly clogged my air filter. 2) What is the best way to clear that passage? 3) How would a blocked EGR cheat smog? What else do you think needs to be replaced in order to get it to pass smog. Thanks for the advice so far. I am actually kinda excited to get home and try it out. More power huh? Looks like I will have to replace my clutch sooner that I thought. BW -

nah.. it's more fun to drive around with an O.J. mask. maybe even a police officer mask and wave a baton around... Ok back to topic. Traced hoses from air filter housing. (will refer to this as housing from now on) one large hose goes to a round device located on the back of the engine on pass side. It has suction. what is this thing? Does this have anything to so with my problem? From what I can tell, it looks like what my manual calls a anti-afterburner valve. Gee I didn't realize I had afterburners on my EA81. -

yep, LA baby..... I have oil leaks in the valve covers and the oil pans There was no real change in driving pattern after i put on the coil. I am going to get a new air filter today and do the white t-shirt idea. Looks like it's getting clogged w/dirt or smoke particles. There is no oil in the air filter housing. Just black smoke residue in the nozzle and the housing outside of the air filter. I recently replaced the PCV valve. -
I replaced my air filter a few weeks ago and now it's badly clogged again. The only thing that I recently changed was an Accel coil. I will probably get rid of that thing and put back my stock coil to see how well my next filter fares. I also pulled a junkyard duty solenoid for my Hitachi carb. Those little pump like things that are located on the manifold. Before only one was ticking, now they both are ticking. Is that suppose to work this way? The filter looks like it's full of black dirt. The nozzle end of the air filter housing has black smoke there too. I am using the heater tube from the exhaust, but I have never seen the flap close to let exhaust air into the housing. Anything else people can think of that would cause this problem?

I have been poking around some PAP yards and I noticed that some older Toyotas have Aisan Carbs. They appear to be the same try of mounting. Per http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/other/toy_motor.html they have roughly the same flow rate as a Weber 32/36.. Does anyone know if they will bolt onto a soob EA engine? what performance can be expected out of one of these? BW
-
A soob should be great as daily driver. If you don't plan to drive it off-road, an older legacy or impreza should serve you well. I have an Outback Sport, Impreza wagon w/higher clearance and a BRAT. Love them both. wagon is more comfortable and better for highway driving. BRAT is for wrenching. They will last you a long time that's for sure. BRAT is hitting 215k and OBS is hitting 92K, (he's still a baby) Good luck searching. BW

glad to know that we didn't waste out formative years studying or doing something important. hmm.. can't recall how to solve a mid-level algebra/geometry problem, but boy can I cite forwards and backwards lines from quest for the holy grail. Yeah I think I just have to keep her happy and let her go yard sale browsing.. BW -

Well it is important to consider what the French think, b/c if they don't approve they may "Fart in me general direction..." and call my mother a hamster and what not... nee.. BW -

yeah. Now the only problem is we don't have any spare money. Everything that we have is going towards the wedding. But there is always the future. BW -
So I was driving w/my fiance last night and I told her that I would probably need to replace the ball joint soon on my BRAT and she looked at me and said "How much do you think it would cost to complete fix BOB? 2000-3000?" hehe she call him BOB like me "I tell her probably 1500." We are talking new paint job, redone interior, probably new ball joints, new exhaust, new clutch So she said let's just same up some $$ and get it done by a profession. Meaning I am not a professional. hehe. I didn't take offense to this, I just was all smiling b/c that means she likes my BRAT. all is good in engaged land. BW

looks like a Junkyard Wars contraption. We should start a photo album w/crazy off the wall things done to soobs and their engines. BW

if you have the $$ lying around and the space to park it $200 is easily what you would get back if you parted it out.

How do you find cheap Subies?
s'ko replied to 4RnrRick's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
not sure of what's available in your area but I usually look on the Recycler here in LA. Lot's of sub $1000 soobs available. Also Post a WTB in the marketplace, you might get a good lead on something there. -
wierd vibration/hummin noise FIXED

I am getting similar problems to this right now. It happens around 20-35 mph. I do get a single clunking noise when i turn the wheel to the far left. Could it be ball joints? How do I know that the ball joint are going to fail? I am getting married on Dec 5 and I do not have extra money for wrenching. BW -

So I am an IDIOT!!!!!!!!!! Misfire at high RPM was due to a badly clogged air filter. Found that out after I swapped out the dist. and spent about 2 hours playing with the timing.
