Can Accel SS coil fry dist electronics?
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
here is the reply that I got from IgnitionMan. The Accels are now made in Taiwan, identified by the crimp at the body to top. Full crimp all the way around the top, Taiwan. If the crimp looks like it is segmented, crimp, raised then crimp, raised, it is an Andover coil, made in Indiana. Accel refuses to do anything about the issues they have, so...I now recommend these two coils, made on the Andover line the Accel used to be made on, Black, NAPA IC12 (DO NOT USE THE IC12SB COIL) Chrome, MSD 8200 Blaster II (DO NOT USE ANY OF THE RED BLASTERS 8202, 8203, 8223). Anyone want a yellow coil-shaped paperweight? -
Can Accel SS coil fry dist electronics?
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
YEp saved oil coil. I am going to try that first as it's a whole easier than pulling out my dist. If you look at the other Accel thread, I e-mail the author of the quote to ask for clarification as to what is going on. Those of you who purchased an Accel made in the USA are the luck ones. The new Accels are made in Taiwan.. those cheapo Chinese, always messing things up!!!!!!!!!!! Bosco Wang ohh wait.. that's me -
Another Accell super coil Dead

Not sure if I am a victim for SADS. (Sudden Accel Death Syndrome). But here is what I found on http://www.348-409.com/forum/showthread.php?t=581 -
Can Accel SS coil fry dist electronics?
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How long did it take for it to die? It started to have issues on Monday night. Then Tuesday I couldn't get over 15 MPH is 1st gear. Top Speed was like 45 or so in 4th w/the car bucking like mad. Then last night I tried to limp it home. Within 15 mins of limping it got really bad and I had to get someone to come tow me home. So we are talking about maybe and 1 hour of engine opp time. Is that common? BW -
1982 EA81. I replaced the stock coil w/the yellow accel superstock on. At first it ran great. No hesistation and lots of power. Well recently I started getting some misfiring at high RPM. I figured that the vac advance wasn't working. Someone mentioned that the Electronic Control pack on the Dist can be fried by all of the power coming from the new hot coil. anyone have a problem with this? What are possible fixes. (besides swaping out the electronic control pack every time) BW

Once wrote a X-mas song about my soob Weather outside is frightful, but my subaru's delightful and since all four wheels do go, let it snow let is snow let is snow It doesn't show signs of stopping, and my cylinders are hopping It's off through the snow we go. Let it snow let it snow let is snow. When other car come in sight, off the road with their ego's all torn Well gleefully laugh at their plight and wave as we lean on the horn... At home my tires are drying and I start to go french frying. And since all four wheels do go... Let it snow let it snow let it snow... bw

1982 BRAT, EA81 Ok here is what's up. Replaced stock coil w/accel superstock. LOVE IT. Drove great!. So last night I am driving home from my fiance's house and I get a lot of hesistation at high RPM. Today when I was going to work. I get to my friend house to pick him up and I can't get over 15 MPH on first. I am guessing that the vacumm advance on the dist is broken b/c when I unplugged the vac line the conditions stayed the same. I also had a really rich smelling exhaust when I sat there and revved the engine. questions: 1) How lose should the vac advance mechanism be on the dist? Mine is very stiff. 2) If the vac advance is working could it be anything else? Thanks BW

mounting reverse lights, ideas
s'ko replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Don't see why that would be a problem. One thing that might take less work is to reverse mount a spot light. I have two spot lights mounted on the headrest bracket. I was thinking of making a crossbar between the two mounts and putting a fog light facing backwards there. -
Yeah. One sure way of busting someone who is doing work comp insurance fraud is to look at their hands. If I ever file a claim for hands or arms, I would be screwed. BW

The age old dilema.....to get or not to get. the main question I would ask is what is the vehicle for? Daily Driver or project car. If daily driver, it might not be a good candidate b/c there would be alot of work involved. I bought a BRAT as a project car and so far is running pretty well. Bought it for 550.00 so far I have spent about 800 dollars in repair and improvements. It's become my daily driver as my fiance is driving my OBS. Ultimately it's a 70's wagon. Probably a handful of those left in working order. If you have the time and the money pick it up and save it from the Crusher. hope the helps.

turbo/distributor vacuum advance question
s'ko replied to Petersubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have a similar question for an EA81 disty. I replaced the vac advance w/a working diaphram. I took a spare line and I sucked it and the vac advance mech doesn't move freely. Is it suppose to be tight. The vac advance mechanism on the disty I took the vac advance unit off at the JY moved very easily. Is there a way to loosen the vac advance unit if it's too tight? BW -
When I got the pug wheels put onto my BRAT, I left the pug lugs for two tires at home. I had the shop install the standard sub lug nuts on two of the holes and the pug lugs on the other two. I had problems getting the sub lugs off b/c they sat so deep in the alloy rims. PM me if you need some pug lugs, I usually grab em when I see that at the PAP

Ahhhh time to learn to weld!
s'ko replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Last I check, northern tool Company has Lincolns and Miller welders. They can break up the payment into several installments on a credit card. That way you can get a better welder w/o having to sink all of the cash right away. I forgot their website, but you can google it to find it. BW -
ok I was really lucky I took a small drill bit and made a hole on the surface of the acorn. Took out a punch and hammer and was able to hammer the stuck nut off. Did not damage the stud. I was able to find a set of the one piece pug lugnuts so I am going to replace the two piece ones with those soon.

I will be coming to PA this winter. Originally grew up in VA so I understand the humidity. My family is staying in Drums and we plan to hit Paragon Adventure park. My brother is a Jeeper, but it would be nice to see some soobs out there as well. Not sure what the requirements are for vehicles at Paragon, but there are some nice trails from what the web site shows. We will be there from Dec 22 to Dec 25th.

Scooby Roo finally kicked the bucket
s'ko replied to roxtar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I feel your pain Roxtar. Since I bought my BRAT in February, I have replaced the fuel pump, the vacuum advance unit on the disty, both rear bearings, front driver side axle, front CV boot job, secondary duty solenoid seat, I still have to replace the oil pan and the valve cover gaskets. replace almost the entire leaky exhaust system track down a new scraping noise coming from the right front wheel area So far I am buying parts from a PAP. I would love to get a hold of a parts car but I do have a place to store it. This is the most work I have ever done in terms of wrenching. My past experience has been taking things apart and having no hope of getting them back together. Keep that faith and keep on wrenching. -
speaking of oil smoldering on the cat. Is that a possible fire hazard? I have to a pretty bad oil leak b/c the previous driver put too much oil into it. I plan to replace the oil pan seals and the valve cover seals on my next oil change. anyone ever had a car catch fire b/c of oil/grease on the front cat? BW

how hard was it. The compressor on my BRAT is dead and I want to replace it but then I would loose the coolant in my system and have to recharge. BW
-
You have to make a mock .50cal machine gun for that thing.... or maybe a potato gun. YEah.... a potato gun.. that would rock. I can mount one to the back of my BRAT and then we can have a war. BW

Spare Parts for Roadtrip & Trail Ride'n ?
s'ko replied to MorganM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fuel pump would be a thing to bring. Also sunflower seeds, can't do a proper road trip w/o those. -
I riced out my car.... (warning, 56K)
s'ko replied to avatar382's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nah.. that's not rice. that's CLEAN... very nice work. Rice would be big red baron tri-level wing and non-working gauges, big 5 inch tach on top of your steering column etc. etc. -
yes. it's possible. On most high mileage engines that have used regular oil, the deposits and stuff have formed artificial seals. When you put in synthetic, the detergent properties of the oil tend to dissolve these deposits and then you have oil leaks. you might as well track down where the oil is leaking and fix them. BW
-
Are there gaskets for the valve covers on a EA81 engine? Also is there a gasket for the oil pan? Thanks BW
