  1. hehe, I have that exact same list printed out as a sort of checklist. Got it from a 4x4 club site. (I forget the name of the club now..)
  2. I didn't see any Soobs listed on thier application guide for the Lokka. They do list Volvos though..... Where were thy back when I was wheeling my old 144 sedan?! http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/index.php?id=70
  3. I think GD has got it right. http://www.ramengines.com/id63.html Just to give you an idea of how much time, money, and technology you'll have to throw at it. Thats a fully built EA81 for aircraft use. (don't see why it could not be used in a car though, they actually say you can if you really want somewhere on the site) 115 hp. $13,600.00 If ya wanna spend the money......... But at that point you are just about halfway to just buying a new STI. Granted you proly could pull more power out of an EA81. I'm sure they are keeping it down a bit for reliability reasons being it's for an aircraft. (they also offer a supercharger for that one) As in build it to handle way more power as it puts out so you don't blow it and fall out of the sky.
  4. Yeah it's been talked about alot but nothing has ever come of it. The big problem is not much room in the rear diff. Plus no aftermarket demand. Though we would all love one on here. Thats just not enough for a locker company to make the investment.
  5. True. I guess for me it's just that the nearest gas station or even highway is generaly 20+ miles away from the places I go to anymore. Myself, I need to be able to camp out before making the hike the next day if it comes to it. So in my case it is required gear. But no, it's not required for all. Even TSF being close to a highway. There is nothing on that highway for miles. (and I have a nasty habit of always going out after dark alone Prefer it that way most trips)
  6. Yup. Carry a 12v compressor and go for the flotation. Scoobyclimbs and I went blasting around last winter and found ourselves in a bit of a bad spot. Even the strap was not going so well. We both aired down to 15 and drove right out of the holes we dug. Amazing what lower tire pressure can do. But I also carry 4 chunks of 3/4" plywood about a footand a half long and 8 inches wide for sand and snow. Generaly don't carry then otherwise though. They work best in sand, need some "lugs" on 'em to get some grip with the tires for snow though. I've heard that cat litter is good for some grip in icy spots.
  7. What Scott said. If the rest of it is good and you find someone who needs the rest or part of the rest of it, it can still be a good parts donor.
  8. Awhile back we did a big one in southern OR. Left camp in the morning, didn't get back until over 13 hours later and WELL over 100 miles of desert driving. All off-road. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=99003 Yes some days it does become an expediton. I never leave the house in the Soob unless I'm ready to spend a few days out in BFE. Even for the quick runs just to get out of the house for an hour. A good gear list is key to not becoming another job for search and rescue.
  9. Yeah it's alot of reading. I've looked at most of it but I need to just download the whole thing and bug my eyes out one night at it. I was looking at one of the maps they have showing the whole area. One of the alternatives looks like they will be closing off a bunch of areas, but also opening up a bunch of areas to "open cross country travel" (according to thier chart of different colored areas). As well as the planned trails. Meaning (if they use the same definiton as the BLM for it) that as long as you don't needlessly tear things up or go into a extra sensative spot, you can just turn off the road and head on through the brush. (basicly blazing a new trail if others end up following) I really don't see the hippies letting that plan happen though. There is a place in eastern OR that is BLM owned that is like that. It's a set up OHV area, but if you respect it you are allowed to venture off trail, just don't plow down small trees and such. They allow it so the occasional stock rig can bypass certain parts of trails. And so if you see something you like off in the distance, you can just head right for it. Sounds odd, but it's true. (at least as of the last time I checked and was supposed to go out there with a group of Jeeps this past spring) I guess in the end we will see. Like I said. Something is better than nothing. They do state in there though that they do not want to Mt. Hood to be known as a destination for OHV use. They do not want to compete with TSF. Gotta get some letter writing done. I can't help but see an Alternative 5 get pulled out of someones butt at the last minute though. "Altenative 5: Same as alternative 1 but add more locked gates."
  10. Oh yeah. As usual it looks like the dirtbikes/ATVs will be getting the majority of the trail miles set for them. But there are supposed to be some for us too. And something is better than being locked out completely.
  11. Just saw this in the Sandy Paper today. http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mthood/projects/ So the Mt. Hood forest is gonna get a OHV overhaul. At least we get to have some sort of say in it. I've known for a couple years they were gonna do some class 2 trails out in the LaDee Flats area (the closed but still wheeled area east of Estacada). But progress has been slow. Even found a trail map at one point showing where they were gonna be on the FS website. And I have a map from the Mt. Defiance area around Hood River that has the class 2 trails marked on it already but they are not open yet. The dirtbike/ATV trails are open and you can get the map in the parking area. But this whole plan will determine the final outcome of what goes where and how much we get. Just thought I'd pass this along for the peeps near me.
  12. hehe. It helps to find the medication quicker...... Parts of the show are a blur. I don't think I met ya there.
  13. That was the local brewery in Stevenson. My Fiancee is freinds with the brewer there.
  14. hehe, yeah that was from when I first got the GPS and had to waypoint EVERYTHING. Gotta keep track of the impotant stuff. I can punch in a couple things and always find my way back to the liquor store... um, I mean home...
  15. As this is the post from the last day I'll stick this here. That is the trip my Soob made for the event. (screenshot from the software my GPS came with for saving to the computer) Dotted line is the track. So close to home, yet I still got to cover a couple hundred miles. And I think most of it was off pavement. Had a blast. But it seems everyone that wheeled with us this time had carnage. Friday we were alright. Saturday there were broken axles, broken stubshafts, broken unibodies , ect. Sunday a broken window and a tacoed radius rod. I got lucky, a easy fix on my leak and slipped bushing, just turn a bolt/nut and fixed.
  16. Here ya go! (not AT the show, but on the saturday trail run) Right in the middle. Unfortunately about a mile down the trail after this was taken, 3 of the 4 bolts holding the rear subframe to the body were ripped out on a recovery. He said it only means Clifford will be bigger and stronger next year.
  17. Hey I got your message. (my phone situation is screwy right now. Time for a new one and all the old ones I kept as backups allow me to talk for 5 min and then die) I'm out for hitting up The Slab. Got a wedding to go to saturday and the past few weekends have been filled with wheeling. In other words I have to spend some time with her and not the Soob. hehe.
  18. I liked that section. Cool to see it off of the little LCD screen even if YT did do things to it.
  19. We had an awesome mix. Lifted hatch with LSD, Lifted wagon open diff, stock wagon with just a wee bit bigger tires. Really got to compare how all three had be handled over various terrain. And big thanks to the truck driver that unlocked a gate for us.
  20. Great time indeed. Big thanks to all involved in putting it on.
  21. That was a great day. I didnt get many different pics thatn you got but I'll put some up once I get the chance. Maybe tonight. We also had some good stuff from sat and sundays trips. (Wheeling all three days! ) So maybe an all encompassing thread will get put up in the trails section.
  22. Hey Scott. The axles on the left look just like the Datsun 510 axles I've seen. (on a whole rear 510 subframe and suspension in a guy's garage) I have thought of them as a possibility as well. I would figure some really strong ones could be had due to the 510 racing crowd. The trick would be at the wheel end. But the diff stubs should fit right into our R160s. They may be to short though..... Even for EA81 width.
  23. Yeah I would think the newer stuff would be a bit tougher. Remember, it's designed to be under a heavier car, with more power. I've talked with Gregg a bit about this and he's taken some measurments I think from under his Outback. We were thinking of going that route on our EA81s. Granted it would be a bit wider. But tougher more plentiful parts. Use like Impreza stuff or something. And he found a CV builder near him that build shafts for racing buggies and such. Guess the guy knows Soobs well and was willing to build up a set of bulletproof custom rear axles. Price yet to be known on that though. (proly alot, but if it's the last set of axles you have to buy....) Then I think we decided for the trouble, a solid rear axle would be the best option and get more flex. Plus if the right axle is picked, a real locker can be thrown in. * and then I checked my bank account, and decided It would be in my best interest to just keep it the way it is for now...
