Yeah there's a truck shop in Portland over somewhere by PIR that can do that. Some kind of old dyno balancer. I guess it's $$$ to have it done there though.
-
I found a chart here: http://www.innovativebalancing.com/ They only went down to 27" tires, 15" wheels. I used what they said for those. (Mine are about 26") And everywhere I read said adding more wouldn't hurt. Proly should have looked up other charts and not just trusted the first one I ran across. But it was getting frustrating and I just wanted it fixed now sorta thing. hehe But I went and solved my problem by just hitting the wrecking yard and picking up a set of 505's for about $30. Now they are balanced no problem. And no more crazy lug/washer action! I just looked at thier site again, they added to thier charts. 205/75/14 takes 2 oz. DOH! (in the trailer chart)

That looks like another fine piece from SJR. All kinds of aftermarket buggy wheels could be used with those.
-
The 505/504's are 14". You can find the alloys in 15". And as you can tell from this thread the 504's are hard to get balanced due to lack of center hole. Plus they take odd lugnut and washer combos to mount right. If you want to take your Soob off-road, you are able to find alot more tire choices than with the stock 13"ers. I have some 26" mud&snow tires on mine right now without a lift. If I lifted it I could go into some 27" all terrains. You can find alot more info on it here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49966

Oh yeah, lift usually drops the suspension more than the diff.

My axles are in great shape, no slop there. The slop is the stub axle in the diff. But is not that much and it's not making noise and the seals aren't leaking (diff is full of lube) so I'm just gonna run it till the diff blows....or I have the time/$$$ to tear into it. (all the bearings in the back are getting to be in need) I found the source if the noise. Loose shock absorber. All noise is gone now from what I can tell. I looked into the off-road axle rebuild stuff. Thing is my suspension does not extend far enough to even begin to stress the ones I have. With the suspension fully extended I can still move the axle back and forth in the cups quite a bit. So I could mod my shocks and proly get some more extension before I start to stress the axles. Just picked up a new can of PB Blaster just in case though.

Hopin' I can make it. Busy weekend. Mud would rock. I tend to do best when others are whining about the conditions.

Thanks for sharing! :slobber: -
Nice. Wish I could ship my GL down there to wheel with you guys.

When I go it's usually between 6-7. Sometimes later once I know it'll be light longer. I like to get at least get some daylight wheeling in before having to kick on all the lights. Or at least make it out into the woods. I really only stay out a couple hours. With the days getting longer I've not actually been out much past dark the past couple times. The last time was just a quick run up to Lolo to see if I could make it to the first trail I like. I almost made it but still a little too much snow. So I ran back down Marmot road an checked out some powerline trails along it in the valley near Brightwood I've seen on my map.... Couldn't get to them (gates n such). I need to check it out a little harder sometime though. I didn't try all of them. Just a quick run if the mood/gas money strikes me. Before it was all snowed in I would head for the top of Goat for the view. Can't wait for that to be doable again.

1. I use Royal Purple in my daily driver. Used to be Mobil 1. The fact you can run a synthetic a little longer makes up for the difference in cost to me. But in my 83 GL.... I've just been running whatever conventional is on hand. It burns and leaks some (but not as bad as when I bought it) so I don't get too picky on what goes in it. As long as it's not too cheap. GTX, as said, is one of my top choices. But even the cheap stuff has to meet certain standards. Mainly it's just what additives are put in by different companies. Had bad luck with Penzoil gumming things up, even with regular 3,000mi changes. 2. For $20. I'd keep having the dealer do it. Less mess for you to deal with.

Cool Thanks. I think I can get it apart. Just need to get cylinders for my torches. Maybe the little propane job I have will do the trick... Everything still seems to work fine as far as still having drive at both rear wheels and all. It's the same knocking clunk as when we all went out last time. I know my rear wheel bearings are kinda sloppy but not making noise yet, and the type they are I can't tighten them up. But it's not just them, the diff cups wiggle as well. And once I get up to highway speed I no longer have the knocking over bumps. I think every bearing on the car started to take a crap once I started running it hard. Oh the sound I'm getting is like someone knocking on the floorboard. At first I thought something just came loose on the suspension and was banging on the body, but that all checked out good. Yeah it's a fun trail. Not exactly sure when the next time I can make it out will be. Soon I hope. Monday/Tuesday nights are good for me. Even for wheeling! In fact I usually try to go out and roll around some most tuesdays.

Ok I can add one more thing to my previous list. Rear diff on it's way out. Hopefuly it's not too late for just new bearings and seals.

Nice. I wandered up around there again today. There was a built Izuzu Trooper or something like that playing around in there. They were the only others I saw, other than a bunch of Yota's going in but I never ran across them after that. Just a little up the road I found a nice Jeep trail. Followed it up a ways and then found a spot I would want a recovery rig on hand before hitting. (kind of a small valley/pit to cross and it was greasy) There was a good turn around there. I'm not 100% certain but I think I know where the other end is. (further up the "main" road, just before the one where the stuckage happened). The gate further up into the logging road maze area was closed though. Guess they only open it at certain times. Now the only problem is I think the bearings on the rear diff stubs are blown. I can hear knocking when I hit bumps, and the DOJ cups on the diff wiggle. But when I took the pins out I found they are rusted tight. So the whole stub must be moving.

ZRC Galvalite spray-on zinc (galvanize in a can)
TeamCF replied to MilesFox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Used to sell it (not sure on brand though) at the welding supply I worked at back in Detroit. Always heard good stuff about it. -
Nice. Wish my EA81 had a smugglers hatch. Looks like a good place to put tools and such out of site to keep the meth heads from busting in.

Oh yeah I forgot about easter. No problem I won't be able to make it next sunday as it's the first RallyCross. Don't even know if I'm gonna be able to make that, as I have like 4 or 5 concert/club events I have to be at that weekend. And will proly be too burnt out for RallyCross. :-\
-
Yeah I tried the married thing a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away. Just was too soon. This time it's gonna rock. We still have no imidiate plans on it though. Just reserving our spots so to speak. hehe
-
Looks like you need some sort of bracing under the radiator. Even maybe just a piece of angle iron welded across the bottom of the support might help keep things from getting as bashed up.
-
I would love to hit up next sunday! I do have to make sure my Fiancee will be cool with it though (we really only see each other on weekends and wednesday nights right now). But I don't see why not. She supports me in all my hobbies. She actually pushed me to start RallyCross, and flying R/C planes. And keeps bugging me to finish up my new album so she can play it in the club. Can't wait to see what pics you got. I should have gotten more. Get the rad all fixed up?

Soob Dominates Mexican Desert!
TeamCF replied to exister99's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Whats neat is I can just toss some supplies in and just wing it with a map and not much plan other than where I want to reach and a general idea of the needed route. (sometimes the map and what is actually still there to drive on differ) Or I can spend a few bucks and go with one of the planned out routes here: http://oohva.org/ Of course they don't cover right from my area so I'd have to figure that out myself. -
Rear axles busting on ea81's

Kinda what I was thinking. Proly a bad/worn out bar in thier rigs. Guess I got lucky and got a really springy one. -

^ Thanks for the bump. I enjoyed reading that. Wanting to do something like that myself. Only proly just stay in Oregon. (Just start heading south west across the stae) Kinda like the trip Chaz did a few years back. -
Rear axles busting on ea81's
TeamCF replied to one eye's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Have they had lots of passengers or stuff in the back? My EA81 with an oversized (steel Pug, 26" tire) spare, shovel, toolbox, fire extinguisher, come-along, bunch of straps, tire chains, extra jack, air pump, ect. Still sits about 1" higher at the diff stubs than at the axle stubs. My suspension is stock (with the adjuster bolt turned up). I take all that crap out and gain about another inch. Just curious about thier setup, Mine's never sat at or lower than the axles. Wish I could buy one of your lifts to make it even better. One day... -
Hey that's cheating! hehe. Have to get out and test that one day.
