  1. No actually they'd be worn @ around 60k but it didn't get bad enough to notice until around 150k. I've seen dozens of small block cams with less than 100k with worn cam lobe(s). It's just that it is such a good engine as a whole that it runs fine with that condition for a long time. God bless the small block 283 / 305 / 327 / 350 / 400. Now put any of those with a awd and you got yourself a machine. HUMMER
  2. Reveeen is excatly right. I owned small blocks for decades. Learned about them from a friend that built GMs when they were built in Mass. The modified valve cover is the best way to go. I had a set that I cut, but long ago gave or threw it way when I found soobs. The only real issue these motors had were a cam lobe at the front and/or back of cam would wear down prematurely. You replaced the cam so you should be golden for a long time.
  3. My 97 leg plastics got rip off this past winter by hard packed snow. I don't see any problems without them.
  4. I got it from Pilgram Subaru in North Kingston RI. I've had good luck with them no wrong parts yet.
  5. Well I got the part for the wipers. Had to buy the rod. The bushings look like they wouldn't go in easy and they are not sold seprately. What a B&*%^$ of a job:mad: ! Looks easy until ya try to stick your hand in there with the rod to line it up on the mounting ball. Can't see it, can barely feel it. Finally it got by turning the wipers on and stopping them with the ign. key. That got the ball a little closer to the small access hole at the motor and was able to press the rod on with a BIG pry bar. Price of rod was $12.00
  6. I haven't got the PN but I found this ("Spring is about 1.5" long and .5" in diameter.") in one of the many threads on this subject. There are also pics of the spring I've seen but I didn't find them. You can probaly get a something that works in a hardware store.
  7. I've never owned or worked on one of these. Does it have EGR? This sounds an awful like a egr valve open when it should be closed. If it is egr'd with eng off stick your finger into the underside of the egr if it's opened NG. With the eng running do the check again it should be opened, rev the eng to 2500 rpms or> the egr should close. When egrs open after about 40 mph you get a MASSIVE vac leak that acts just like what your describing.
  8. Surging idle which is what it now sounds like is commonly caused by vac leaks. Get a can of carb cleaner and spray the any vac hoses you can find. Also any intake connection ie; manfoild to block. If it is a leak and you hit it with the cleaner the idle will drop for a few seconds because air is no longer being sucked in, the flammable cleaner is, once the cleaner is burned/dried the idle will increase and begin surging again. Make sure you have no ignition leaks (sparks) as it can ignite the carb cleaner. I check for spark leakage and keep a fire extin. near by.
  9. That sounds like enough cap. I saw those on sale nice buy. I bought a bunch of stuff there this past weekend. They opened up a store not too far from me, now I can look at and touch the stuff I want to buy before buying!
  10. I always zero out my tripomder when I gas up. Driving 100 miles I day I always fill up. I get abt 300 miles to a tank so even if the gauge and light doesn't work I know when its time to fill up.
  11. Hey mate, I'm an old diver myself I'd love to see pics of the rig when your done.
  12. I'd try to stay away from dealerships. It's not anything a good wrencher can't handle. The heads are sent to a automotive machine shop. If the shop is good then their choice of mach shop is propably good too. Look for a Subaru specialty shop if you can't find that then a foreign car shop. Ask if they will pull the motor, make sure they do both heads replace the water and oil pumps and the seals. I'm sure you've read all this on here. found these http://search.boston.com/local/Search.do?s.buzId=42310264,-71384598,2860191946868988162 http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=subaru&find_loc=Boston+MA http://www.checkbook.org/sitemap/Boston/Ratings_And_Articles/Auto_Repair_Shops/detail.cfm?uKey=8769
  13. Thanks Hank, I've got a 97 leg w/ a 2.2L I'm driving now it looks like it's going to be the donor car. I thought the ex. ports on the 97 2.2 would be the same as the 97 2.5 but I looked and they are not so I'll have to use the leg Ypipe.
  14. I know this has been discussed before but I have a question that I haven't seen addressed yet. Some of you know from my rants I have had a bad time with my OB 2.5. I'm getting ready to do the swap to 2.2 so I've been checking things out more closely. Noticed that my 2.5 does have a EGR on it. My buddy who did the 1st engine replacment (2.5 for a 2.5 oh gwad) told me he had to use my original intake. Having a MT I was surprised to see the EGR. The eng comp sticker also shows vac routing for a egr. The tag near the drivers side shock tower indicates it has always been a MT. Anyone have any ideas about this?
  15. Good ole wax works also. I use 1500 grit LOTS of water (running hose while sanding) and car wax after drying.
  16. Hi, Nipper, I wouldn't doubt she does just that with the ice on the windshield. Subaru should hire this woman to stress test their new models. I swear if the girl was in a rubber room with a car she'd find a way to break it. She does keep me busy. Thanks, nipper
  17. Wow that looks like it would be rough on the car. That plow and frame look HEAVY. Nice setup though.
  18. Car is a 1999 imp L 2dr. Problem: lots of play in the wipers transmission arms. Wiper would slap hard on return on high and travel almost past the edge of the windshield frame. Well I did some exploratory surgery and I think I need a new bushing where the arm connects to the motor. Question: Can the small braket bolted to the motor or the bushing be purchased as a seperate part? The other end has the bushing that holds the arm. Also does anyone have any pics or drawings of what the bushing looks like?
  19. I don't understand why not one US company hasn't done this. These AWD's are great in almost any driving conditions including ice. Here in RI we see it all and the soobs handle it. I see suburu's everytime I go anywhere here, the only place I don't see'em is in the used car section of the paper, nobody sells them. I work close to the snow belt in Mass. I own my soob to be able to get home and I always have. The only thing that comes close to a Subaru is USMB! This site is the most vaulable tool a Subaru owner can have. I learn more about my car and soobs in general here than I've learned anywhere and I've been at it a long time.
  20. I don't know what the job intails but I'd sure find out! It can't be that hard if its a subaru. Soobs are the easiest cars I've ever worked. One of the major reason I stay with em. Also parts availablity make sure you can get the parts. If you call a bone and ask for the parts and they laugh at you, then your probaly sunk. That is a clean and neat looking machine right there. I'd buy it. Of course I'd have to move after my wife saw it! Get in touch with daviegravy he/she is on this site with a 92 SVX
  21. Nipper How old is the bridge and how much land? My 97 OB and Leg both get 25MPG the 99 imp gets abt 28mpg combo Your not draggin that dragon are you?
  22. That's way TOO high. The car I'm thinking of putting a plow on is a 97 leg wgn I got from a private sale for $1,800. It needed nothing and everything works. Let somebody eles get screwed.
  23. The legecy is just filling in for the OB while I search for a 2.2 at the right price. If I can't find one soon then the legs fate is to be the donor as it has a nice 2.2 in it. But if I can find what I want then I'll give the leg a useful end of life as a plow car. Besides there ain't much that I can't fix!
  24. Skip, That is a thing of beauty!!! I like it. 1. How much plowing did it do? 2. How did the unibody hold? 3. Did the headlights shine over the plow? 4. I'm guessing by the config. of the plow it didn't move side to side? 5. How easy was it to take on and off? I was thinking a more convetional setup but that looks like it'll work fine on my driveway. It's only about 150' long on a hill one car wide with space to park 4 cars. Maybe i'd use it a few times a year tops, if we get a foot or more or if it'll turn to ice. Thanks for the info.
