Thanks for the link. I checked it out and they might just fit. Subaru Legacy Fits the following Subaru Legacy applications: Please note: Fits 4 Door Wagon models only. Please note: Includes Legacy Outback models. Legacy Model years: 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 The way I read the above is they if all Legacy wagons and Legacy Outbacks regardless of year. And Legacy 2000 - 2004 (sedans???) 4dr seems to be the key.

Chevy Small Block questions

I'd rebulid the 283. They are great motors. They give good performance, super reliable with better gas milage then a 350. I rebuilt and used 350s most of the 70's and 80's good motors also but if ya got a 283 go with it! -
You can probably drive that car for a long time even if the HG is leaking. I drove my OB with the second motor after it overheated slightly and I saw bubbles in the overflow tank. I got six months out of it. I would have gotten more had I cared to change the thermostat after it failed closed. Check the coolant everyday until you get a feel for how fast it's leaking. Check the oil @ every fillup. Drive it normal. I'd still be very suspecious of the motor itself. I wouldn't put any real money into it but that's me. If you buy a used 2.5 have the hg's changed before it's installed. Or check into buying a 2.5 rebuilt from CCR or some other trustworthy source. The price won't be much different between either options.

I wouldn't put much faith in the integrity of that motor. With very little in the way of coolant and oil it's probably cracked somewhere head(s) or block. I had the same senairo twice with my 97 outback 2.5. I wasn't up to speed on the HG issue with ej25's from 96 2002 or so, and bought another ej25 from a bone yard. Same thing happened to the second motor. It is starting to look like at least from this board that the issue may have ended with the last gasket desgin. I'm going for the 2.2 to slove my problem. You just have to decide how much $$ your willing to spend. There's no cheap way to get the car back on the road.

Positive Crankcase Ventilation it removes the unburnrt gases from the crankcase and routes them back thru the intake to be burnt. PCV has an affect on overall engine performace including gas milage. If they become clogged the engine will run rough and on some soobs because the hoses that carry the gases to the PCV are over the exhaust system oil coming up as part of the gases will collect in the hoses and drip on the exhaust causing mysterious oily smelling somke to rise from behind the engine. If your doing a good tune up the pcv valve is as important as anything eles your changing. Lesson over. -
There is a thread somewhere on this site where one of the gurus stated that ATF is different from other fluids in that if you add enough clean ATF to dirty ATF you get servicable ATF. In other words don't worry about you changed its good. I'm going to put a hose on the ATF return line and flush it by running the engine and adding new ATF while the old stuff pours out the return line and into a bucket. I'll start a thread with pics when I do it. Standby.

Have you driven the car around yet? It might just take sometime for the ecu to "learn" that's its controlling a MT. I can't say for sure but I suspect when the ecu doesn't get any AT signals it'll change to MT mode and not be looking for a egr signal. You'll still have to clear the codes but they won't come back. Worth a try, driving it won't hurt it. If you have driven it for awhile try clearing the codes, you might get a nice surprise. Or not. Good luck.

Num, The ej25 motor isn't garbarge the 4 previous hg designs were garbage. The motor is actually very tough. Having said that I will NEVER own a pre 2003 ej25 again unless I get it free. Because the 1st thing that needs to be done is hg replacement. I never would have payed $4000. for my 97 OB had I known about the HG issue. The 1st one went 120K HG. I didn't get a 1k out of it. The second went 110K. Both never overheated until the hg went.

Nipper you've got to be kidding. There's still some WWI vets around. My Dad lived till age 84 my mom is still alive and both my inlaws are still kicking. Besides better to live a short free life than a long controlled one. I can't even cut a dead tree down on my own property without big brother approval. I want to live in a sane world again.

Bet you won't do that again. These are the best learned lessons as long as nothing gets damaged. I've been thinking of tapping into the trannys return cooling line with a hose, running the engine and filling the tranny untl clean fluid pours out the hose. Thinking it might be quicker and more complete fluid change than the old 3 times flush and fill. Any thoughts on this? I did this on the power sterring system last week and it worked out great.
