  2. Small sheet metal screws work good if you can reach the spot with a drill make a hole put the screw in tighen up.
  3. Start off simple. Are the compressors electical connetors connected and are any fuse(s) for the AC there and good? Does the AC fan (@radiator) come on when the AC is on with the interior fan on?
  4. I just pick up one exactly like this one for the same money yesterday! Same HG issue. Guy had it sitting in his yard 4 years finally said yes the last time I asked if he was ready to get rid of it. Now I've got 4 soobs that don't work!
  5. Have you had the head checked for cracks? Sounds like the water jacket is opened to the exhaust.
  6. I think it may be federal law. Like the $10,000. fine for messin with the cats. I know in RI the only way I can get a used cat is to buy the whole car. Can you get the crack welded or brazed? That maybe your best bet to get past inspection.
  7. Are the compressors slipping on you as you tighten them? Tighten each side a little at a time use visegrips as a stop to keep them from sliding. Don't put your face / head directly over the spring while your doing it!!
  8. I like the look of the red car and its more areodynamic! Give ya that edge:lol:
  9. Thats's excately my point. If the HG's are done then anything eles that goes wrong is normally not serious and easy to fix though maybe not always cheap.
  10. I do miss those V8's and the bigger ones too 427 ..... Lots of torque @ low RPM's the exhaust is like music:burnout:
  11. You didn't sound that way to me. I think the post could be read either way. At 1st reading I thought the plugs and wires were done as part of the cars maintance. After reading it again I can see where one could take it that they were done in response to a problem. I'm curious how it turned out too.
  12. The sensors job is to tell the ecm when the engine is pinging/knocking. The ecm retards the timing until the sensor stops sending the signal. If the sensor is bad (open) then it doesn't signal the ecm and the engine pings/knocks. So yes to your question except it doesn't make the engine knock it lets it knocks. Also I used a bosh knock sensor on the 99 imp seems to be working fine. Make sure the angle is correct on installation it does make a difference.
  13. Sorry I get automotive dislexya somtimes with open and closed loop. It seems like his problem started after the plugs and wires where installed. I know it drove me crazy the 1st time it happened to me. Seems like the new gen engines are fussy. The older soobs I had used aftermarket without problems.
  14. Unless the HG's have been changed it's not worth paying anywhere near book value for. Other than the HG problem they are GREAT cars. How many other cars can go 200K without any other major issues? If you want one buy it have the HG's changed you'll be happy. Just don't pay full boat.
  15. Of course if the plugs are not firing hot enough that will mimick a rich mixture. The idea of unplugging the O2 sensor is good. The engine will run in CLOSED loop. If that improves things than I'd change the O2. I still think it sounds like the wires and/or plugs.
  16. Were the plugs and wires OEM? I put autolites in my wifes impreza when we first got it, ran like CRAP, it was so bad it was dangerous. I'd try OEM componets before a coolant sensor, which if you do replace use OEM.
  17. If you know it's a knock sensor code change the sensor. They go bad with age. Mostly cracks. The code reports a problem with the sensor not an engine knock.
  18. I know the one year I did not use stabilizer in my lawnmower I had to flush the gas out and refill it before it would start. I kept gas for over a year in a 55 gal drum buried in the ground (don't ask) with stabilizer in it with no problems. Good article Nipper.
  19. If you have the buckets and enough AT fluid you can flush it by putting a hose on the return (lower) side of the AT cooler in the rad the other end in a large bucket. Run the engine and keep pouring fluid in the the trans until it comes out clean. Keep up with the flow, don't run it dry. Helps to have 2 people.
  20. Gary, I'm half joking about being confused. You give good advice and I appreciate it. I'm focused on my Outback now, if by Sat night it looks like it's not going to happen then I'll turn to the TB'd Impreza and cut that wire. I'm not big on servicing ATs. When it comes to ATs I usually just replace em. Thanks, Jordan
