Saw a beautiful Soob travling down the road the other day. Don't know the year guessing maybe late 90's / early 2000 Outback 4 door sedan with an H6. Nice shape too. No for sale sign on it though. If I wasn't married I'd been following the the car to beg the woman driving it to marry me, or at least sell me the car.

If you keep the car long enough you will encounter the hg issue. What's long enough? Hard to say, anything over a year with a 100,000 on the motor already. Or 2 weeks after you buy it a hg could go. Most of these cars are way over priced IMO because of this hg issue. Having had my turn with hgs on these cars I would replace the hgs on any 2003 or earlier 2.5 if there was no proof it was done already, before I put it on the road.

blown radiator tank what else?

I think Reveeen gave you the answer. -
Cold Chuck, I would check the choke related items. Also check for vac leaks. A small leak would be more noticable when the engine is cold and supposed to be choked. If it surges at hot idle at all, I would start looking for vac leaks first. Spray carb cleaner on the vac hoses then around the intake when you spray the leak the rpms will increase for a moment then idle down again. I'm not familar with the setup you have but, carbs I know and they have different ways to do the same thing. First the choke plate must close when the motor is cold and open a certain amount after the motor starts. The idle is usually increased at cold start and then is decreased when the motor is hot. Check those items and adjust anything that isn't right.

PCVs are often overlooked and cause problems when they are. I bought a 97 Leg wgn 2.2. Seller repeatly said all manitance was done the motor did have a minor oil leak. The test drive revealed nothing serious and I bought the car. After driving it 100 miles there was a small amount of smoke coming from under the hood and the idle was rough. First thing I did was check the pcv and sure enough NG. Replaced it and the hoses. Oil leaks, smoke no more. Hasn't used any oil in 4k miles now. I put at least 600 miles a week on the car so my oil changes are higher mileage or I'd be changing oil once a month or so. I change my pcvs every 2 years as part of a tune up just befroe emissions testing. Ours always pass.

Nice job so far looking good. I've got agree with Bucky and Audio about the vent. Makes it look like a Maytag.

Overheating with A/C on

I'd be looking for a blocked radiator, collapsed hose, weak water pump. Don't know what a oil cooler would do for ya. -
I agree those look much more rugged than helicoils. Must be good for other heavy duty uses also. Once the head is bolted down there's no where for the inserts to go anyway, but knowing that the bolt is held in by those would make me feel better.

I had this same issue with my 97 OBW. I also had what I thought were several "warped" rotors based on the shimmy, not by actually checking them. I replaced the rotors instead of having them turned. Each time I cleaned the new rotors with brake cleaner. After a few months the shimmey would return. Seems that some rotors from the land of the dragon have a protective coating for shipping that isn't removed by brake cleaner, but by hot soappy water. The coating is burned into the pads with use over time and the pads start grabbing errecticlly causing a shimmey that in my case was worst the faster the speed of the car. Try having the rotors cut and ask the shop to check and tell you if they were really warped. Once cut they'll be clean, replace the pads, lube the slide rails and bracket. You should be all set. I've had lots of soobs their brakes were fine.

HeliCoil is the best way I know of. You can get them at most any parts store. It's similar to the posting using the bolt but easier. You'll get a drill, tap and helicoils in the kit. I'd use hi-temp loctie on the helicoils just to make sure they're stable.

Well spring has arrived here in Rhode Island and with that a noteable increase of gas mileage in the Legecy. The last 3 fillups I've gotten a 27-28 MPG. I think the rise in temp. and the changing height of the sun has increased the MPG. My car sits out in the sun all day so the gas must warm up and expand increasing the volume. Gotta love spring/summer!

Look on the dash drivers side about 2-4 inches down from where the dash starts to angle toward the firewall. You'll see a small door/hatch it may say OBDII on it I not sure but that's the connector. As far as what eles you have to do I couldn't tell you unless you have a SnapOn scanner. After you plug it in turn the key on and follow the instructions that come up. It is after all only a little computer so use your skills. Good luck

Electrical gremlins.... voltage related
screwbaru2 replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
AudioFile, It sounds like your stero maybe the problem. Have you tried running with the stero unplugged from the car? There maybe a capisitor leaking inside the stero feeding low voltage back to your charging sys.
