It's not good for the MPG's cold engines never run as lean as normal temp. I'd cover some of that rad. at least until the weather gets warmer.

Ok, need to run this by folks better then me

I would change the head bolts. They do streach with time -
"Ocassionally I have pumped the accelerator and it's caught but generally not. Then I try the next day and it starts straight up". I'm thinking fuel pressure loss with the engine off. The pressure is leaking down and takes some time to built back up. Tee in a pressure gauge to the fuel line, run it, shut it off and let it sit, overnight. It should hold the pressure. If not you gota find the leak. Make sure 1st the gauge setup isn't leaking. Sometimes the injectors leak down.

Try filling the tank. Zero out the tripodmeter. Drive till less than 1/4 tank. Refill tank, record gallons and miles on tripodmeter. divide the miles by the gallons. that's your mpg.

Rough idle

I know what you mean. I'm lucky what I can't do I know a guy 25 years now that does it. Most people don't have the luxaury of being picky on who works on their cars. It's a real crap shoot. The more I think about your situation the better the idea of pushing the issue of incorrectly adjusted valves sounds. Of course I mean if they can't fix the idle. That maybe your ace card. As much as you may want to get away from these guys stick with them until they fix it. -
There really aren't any big special issues that I know of with the cars your looking at. A 2.2 w/ a stick is going to serve you quite well. The high mileage means you'll have issues due to time / mileage, alt. / p/s / exhaust but that's the case with any car. My opinon I'd rather do those things to a soob than any other car. They are the easiest cars I ever worked on. Setup very well for ease of repair and maint. They are hard to find, nobody wants to part with them!

VIN Help Needed- What's in this car?
screwbaru2 replied to silentfive's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You've come to the right place. I can't help you with details but someone will. First thing I would do is find a vin loaction on the car. That is look around. In the engine compartment, I've seen vins on the paint ID plate. Might be worth taking a peek under the rug on the dash if all else fails. Match it to the vin you have now. If they match and it conflicts with the car you need to ask about the history because someone did something at sometime to change the car from original. -

You maybe on to something there when you mentioned they had you driving around with incorrectly adjusted valves. Burned vavle seats would cause what your experiencing and at higher speeds you probaly wouldn't notice. I'd float that by them if only to watch their faces change! -
You mentioned you changed axles. Make sure those axle nuts are tight. I had one back off I me one time. Don't know how, it looked staked really good. It took quite awhile for it to happened. Anyway the outside pad was worn way down from the wheel trying to get off the shaft. The brake pedal felt lower than normal but still firm. As mentioned your master maybe starting to leak internally, you won't see the leak but you'll feel it in the pedal. Pump the brakes till they get hard, then press hard if they don't stay frim for a few seconds I'd suspect the master.

anyone heard of acetone in the fuel
screwbaru2 replied to 86subaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I thinks it just cleans the injectors real good. Injector cleaners fuel the motor with just the cleaner from arosol cans. That doesn't hurt the motor. Clean injectors will improve mpg. The dirter they are the bigger the improvment. It would be interesting to stop using it after awhile to see if the mpg goes down or if it stays the same because the injectors are cleaner. My 2 cents -
