  1. How did you run a TD04 (higher boost than stock) without a BOV?!!! I'm going to relocate the MAF to the pipe between the intercooler and the throttle body, there's a thread on that here somewhere, takes care of most of the MAF issues . . . and DOWN, its definately going down, probably tein coilovers, i'm just not sure which ones i need, the ones for an xt6 (because of 5 lug swap) or something else (easier to find) chris
  2. thanks tizzle! so, nobody has an opinion or suggestions for my new project?
  3. The FSM for 89 lists the test procedures i mentioned on FSM's section 2-7, page 94 (pdf linkey's page #100) right above the diagram you scanned . . . check it out. http://www.ch601.org/engines/files/SubaruEA82-ServiceManualPart2.pdf
  4. Gloyale, the book says to check resistance in ohms between #1 and the rest of the injector wire pairs, with #1 being the constant variable (to make sure the wires are good). . . i dunno, i was just following the directions can i pick that up at napa?
  5. we were wondering where in the he-ck they were hiding that, it's in the same spot on the xt?!
  6. (i'm reading this while i eat my cocoa puffs) i put a multimeter to all injectors last night, all were in the acceptable 2.5-3 ohm range of resistance, then i focused on the wires for each injector. #'s 2,3,4 showed a resistance of about 20ohms (like the manual said) but number 1 showed no resistance, 0ohms. we followed the wire all the way up the harness checking for continuity (that cool "beep if you're touching the same wire test) and it #1's two wires had continuity all the way through both of the main connection plugs on the firewall. with the key on, all pairs of injector wires read just under 12v DC, even the #1 wires. that's my story from last night . . . does that help diagnose at all?
  7. thanks, it'd be good to know at least . . . I remember spending hours every weekend at Almac when I was a kid (my dad used to wrench on old honda's with parts from that place) it was the best wrecking yard up north. . .
  8. hey, i wonder if that guy's got an xt turbo chillin at his place, from what i've read doing searches, the xt turbo's "up pipe" is a little less restrictive than the stock EA82T's in the RX . . . might save me some $$ by not having a custom one built . . . might see one at the pull-a-part tomorrow too . . .
  9. the problem is that i think the rear wipers only came on the RX's, not just any 3 door. the hatch i picked up from a GL didn't have a wiper in it, so i'll be cutting the hole and swapping in the wiper from my old hatch. i'll be at the pull-a-part tomorrow, i'll keep a look out for an RX. chris
  10. Just to add to what everyone else has said, I had a similar problem (mucho underpowered) with my EA82 engined 87 wagon, and i found that one of the main vacuum lines behind my carburetor was disconnected, which fixed the power issue. I also had the ticking issue, which could be caused by either a loose exhaust manifold on the right or left side, or by a lifter as was mentioned before. You should purchase some Seafoam (an engine/fuel additive that really does work!) from your local autoparts store and pour some directly into the engine through the oil add spout . . . Seafoam actually got my valve(s) to stop "ticking" by cleaning up all lubricated surfaces in the engine. Hope that helps chris
  11. actually, i need to change that, now i live in Everett too, (merrill ck pkwy, boeing area) "the" wrecking yard in Mt Vernon is just off the freeway, take the college wy exit, go towards the river (west) and south, it's on the dike road behind Blade Chevrolet . . . (f.y.i., there's quite a few older gen soobs there, but the guy who runs it now is kind-of a jerk. . . ) I got my parts from the new pull-a-part in Arlington, just past the airport.
  12. Hi everybody! Last week I picked up an 87 RX that one eye had been saving for me for a coupla years (thanks man) It's got the green digidash the dual range, the diff lock, the 5sp, all the cool guy computer stuff- and even better, it all works (even though the car had been sitting in a field for years, typical subie ) Here's a couple of pics . . . So, as you can see, it's a little rough 'round the edges. For one of us "west-coasters" it's got some gnarly rust, and the red hood is extra sexy i cut clean A-pillars out of a GL 3 door at the pull a part for $30 and got the hatch off of the same 3 door for $45 including brand new lift-struts (it's even white!! ) Even though the car fired right up (right there in the field) and runs really well after just a fluid flush and oil change, I bought a 60k (ish) "from japan" EA82T MPFI from suberdave (that dude knows his stuff!! thanks again dave) and a TD04 off a newer WRX from Cobcob. I've got the matching WRX top mount intercooler, mccord headgaskets, and a downpipe coming!! The plan is to drive her "as is" after replacing the hood and rear hatch and a few other little things, while I accumulate all of the little bits necessary to put in the TD04'd EA82T (BOV, boost controller, gauges, etc). After that I'm going to do the obligatory 5 lug swap, get those A pillars welded in, and repaint the car this color . . . I think this should be a locatable OEM color, but if not, I'm thinking Mopar's Mineral Gray Metallic will work as well. I'll be getting ahold of you, McBrat, for those replacement decals (those look awesome b.t.w.) Whats everybody think so far? (the posts had been slow on the ol USMB for the past few days, so I went ahead and started this project thread at an earlier stage than I had planned, plus I'd love everyone's input!!) Anybody who has those little turbo bits I was mentioning and would like to get rid of them, please PM me! Also, I'm going to need to replace all suspension bushings (all dried and worthless) and the shock/struts and would like some experienced ideas on what to do there . . . believe me I've searched and found soo many ideas, too many maybe- and I'd like to get them narrowed down a bit!! Thanks chris
  13. my wagon is doing this right now . . . traced it to bad intake manifold gaskets, it's leaking at the junction of the manifold and the block, right down into (and out of) the spark plug area below, and then onto the exhaust . . . gotta get that fixed, and the OEM gaskets are only $4 at Napa, Felpro's are impossible to get (f.y.i.)
  14. doors look good will, now if only i could figure out how to get RX doors to open "Lambo Style" chris
  15. um, that stock 87 that removed a certain burgundy wagon out of a snowbank at reiters a month ago its an 87 ea82 3at 4wd pushbutton, by march 15th it should have a welded diff. did ok at reiters, just needed a little better ground clearance and some knobby tires. chris
  16. Jeff, lets get that lift on the wagon and i'm down . . .
  17. seriously . . . this might be the most hondaricerocket.com flamejob i've ever seen here on the USMB :-\ like he said, helpful suggestions people . . . jeeeze i've been searching through 3 or 4 years worth of posts about setting up a reliable turbo system in an EA82t wagon, sifting through all of the "will this work," and "why did this grenade my engine," and it would've been nice to have had one page where most of the information was easily accessed, but what can you do? (search and read until you look like this > ) thank you grossgary for taking the time to take all the info from years worth of (mostly speculatory) posts and condensing them into a format that is much easier to use!!!! (i'm going to be doing "the swap" on an RX soon . . . ) chris
  18. i'll get one of these for the "new to me" turbowag that i'm towing home friday ( ), i think this looks really cool i was just waiting for somebody else to try the thing out, before my investment . . . anybody have actual experience with this? chris
  19. this may be a repost, i find it hard to believe that i couldn't find anything about this website in searching the USMB, especially cosidering the info is from right here in the PNW. this would be a great sticky for new people wanting to find out basic info on their older gen subies, and a good reference for those of us who've just forget some things http://www.cars101.com/oldsubaru.html great year by year info, comparisons, specs, from 69 on! chris
  20. step one, admit you have a problem step two, use the factory service manual when rebuilding engine j/k when all else fails, read the directions is my motto chris
  21. i guess we don't need an explanation for your screen name now . . . gas leaks are pretty easy to find, my constant sinus headache from the gas smell on my wagon led me to repair/replace some hoses around the external fuel pump that had ballooned up and were leaking . . . now my garage and house smell a lot better too . . . my .02 would be that you have a vacuum problem- print out the vacuum diagram thats here on the usmb and start checking hoses (so much fun :-\ ) oh and seafoam, 2 bottles of seafoam, seriously
  22. ya know, i've never done better than @20mpg w my 87 wagon, i'm very interested to see what your problem ends up being. my wagon is also carbed, ea82, 3AT, w full tune-up 3500 miles ago. is yours 4wd? original fuel pumps? seafoam lately? complete emissions setup still or "de-smogged"? (not to judge, just for info) chris
