sheesh, i get no love in my wagon . . . might have something to do with the crumpled rocker panel under the passenger door (might also have to do with the beautiful girlfriend who usually is sitting above said rocker panel) when i get the RX done, for the 10 minutes it's going to run before "it blows up" i betcha i'll look pretty coooool  chris

engine weight ,ea82 turbo motor
audio_file replied to 86subaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
how exact do you want it?, i've got an almost fully assembled longblock, and i can stack the exhaust manifold and orig turbo on it and put it on a bathroom scale for ya, thats about the best i can do, unless somebody else already has the exact #'s chris -
Re-routing turbo hoses?
audio_file replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
went to napa to pick up said hose insulation (the tube shaped stuff) a few days back, they sell it. but for $20 for a 3' tube!!!!! their universal exhaust, coolant, intake wrap was also $20, but for a 1.5x20' roll, so that may be the route to go, unless someone here knows a reason not to use the wrap on anything besides exhaust? . . . i was thinking wrap tight and use thick zip ties/hose clamps on the ends . . . chris -

Tire Chains in the mud?
audio_file replied to wncsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i chained up in the snow/mud at reiter pit (off road park) trying to keep up with the modded subies a few months back, and it worked out pretty well. +1 on the low wheel speed though, especially with heavier duty chains as the "g-forces" from the heavy chains rotating will progressively cause them to stretch those rubber lines that try to hold the chains to the tire correctly. i had one side come off, and as soon as i heard it, i stopped to fix it . . . didn't damage anything (and that was with the "real" chains, not cables) -
The SECRET to cleaning subaru aluminum rims??
audio_file replied to SuperBrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
a good metal (aluminum) polish made by mothers, and a 3" diameter cotton cloth disk that attaches to the end of your 14-18v drill. worked wonders for my treated aluminum wheels after some bonehead at a carwash sprayed the acid stuff on them (basically removed most of the clear-coat ) -
New to me 87 RX (horay!)
audio_file replied to audio_file's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Put my pull-a-part hatch on today, removed the "Subaru DL" logo and cleaned it up a bit . . . Before . . . After . . . Looks sooo much cleaner, now i've just got to decide if I want to clean up the rubber spoiler (strip cracking stained paint off and have it repainted) and put it back on, or leave the rear this way, suggestions????? chris -

New to me 87 RX (horay!)
audio_file replied to audio_file's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
car's gonna be registered in Skagit County (no testy ) i've already got the up-pipe for the flange, and i've talked to my exhaust guy about the welding (want to lift and rotate turbo slightly to reduce clearance issues) sounds like i'm going to go electronic with a few things, the boost controller (per caboobaroo, and you ) and fuel management . . . $$$ will the stock WRX recirc valve that came attatched to the wrx intercooler work? -

re-assembled the heads today!!! mounted them up and it looks like i have an engine again!! no probs with re-torquing the head-bolts at all, the torque specs in the FSM for the cam housing seemed really low though (something like 20nm) but, i followed the directions so . . . took the spider intake apart to check hoses and clean out the 3/4" of sludge that was inside, will reassemble tomorrow . . . now it's time to spend some more $$ need to purchase: 1)wrx downpipe 2)bov 3)boost controller 4)clutch kit (i got in on the .02 special, but only got the disk, and i'm kindof a freak about keeping brands together, so i'd rather find a complete set instead of just buying a pressure plate :-\ besides, i found one by exedy. exedy=cooler ) 5)intercooler piping, i think it sounds like 2.5" is best, and i don't need much . . . 6)fuel pump 7)higher flow injectors (maybe, from what i've read, RX injectors and cpu are capable of close to 300lph stock, can someone verify this or tell me i'm wrong please?!) 8)depending on fuel pump/injector situation, maybe a piggyback fuel management system to keep flow rates correct . . . 9)gauges- boost/vac, exhaust temp, water temp, maybe air/fuel mixture (again depending on if i need to use piggyback system or if RX brains can figure everything out) 10)MSD ignition gear, probably just their uni replacement coil and wires . . . sheesh, talk about spending more on a car then its worth (to NADA) . . . any help/suggestions/deals on my shopping list would be very appreciated chris -

scott, when you say EJ it, you've got something fun up your sleeve and i'd be stupid not to see what it is b.t.w. you should "twin carb" that EJ in the wagon, something about being able to say (insert speed channel's Alain de Cadenet voice here. . .) dual Webber carburettors  -
those look awesome nice find!! chris

1988 EA82 carb wagon and 1988 EA82 turbo coupe
audio_file replied to levonspradlin's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
no disrespect to the massive amt of knowledge with Gloyale and G.D. but i believe the windshield is a taller one in the RX than in the wagon (i've measured, trying to take A-pillars from a wagon to fix the rusted out ones on my RX) by about 1.5 inches -

oh yeah, it gets up to the 2nd or 3rd bar on the digidash, blows out "room temperature" air, but when you have no carpet and no insulation on the floor, its still too darn cold :-\ i'm not hugely concerned with the engine that's in the car now, as i've been building a little stronger (hopefully) one over the past few weeks. however, if once i pull this engine everything looks ok, then i'll probably do a simple rebuild on this engine and maybe put it in my carbed EA82 wagon and switch it over to SPFI . . .we'll see . . . -

audio_file replied to audio_file's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
today i put the seats and belts back in (after removing everything to get the moldy carpet out) and took the car (still in "fresh from years in a field condition) on a little romp . . . that car is sooo much fun! even with that snail shell sized turbo, with no heat (no thermostat), no carpet, an exhaust leak, and the TOD, and the 13" wheels with massive marshmellow tires- it's hard to describe why exactly, but it was such a fun drive!! chris -

somebody had to take over for the departed crazy EA82 fanatic -
thats awesome, i'd much rather do this than $50-120ea for 52mm gauges!! question, you say you're getting 6 total, you mean 6 sensor sets or 6 individual display units? each display unit can display measurements for only one field, or can you display boost pressure, and egt, and water temp on the same unit? how do you plug in for things besides temp, i.e. boost/vacuum? thanks for the update!!! chris
