+1 The same sanding could be done with any paint as rust appears, it just wont show as easily. You'd have to look for bubbling only, instead of discoloration, but a good paint like hammerite will slow the rusting to a crawl. It is glossy, non-absorbant, and does not breathe. No air, no moisture...no rust. Cost is not bad either: $60/gallon compared to $35 for a basic alkyd primer. Oh, and it's primerless paint. Can you tell that I'm a paint salesman!?!

Primer is flat and absorbs moisture, that's why it will rust quick. You could do the roll-on rustoleum paint job, but it'll fade if you don't keep it waxed real well. If you're not too picky on color, I'd go with a smooth hammerite thinned with xylene. It retains it's gloss much better than rusto, and probably rivals true auto paint in hardness. Roll it on anywhere...no worries about over-spray or compressors. If you didn't mind the look of it, you could even go hammered paint, and have it done in only two coats without having to worry about surface imperfections.

That's a good way to beat each other to death around here!

...just saying Scott certainly does not need any of my help, or if you were calling monstaru Eric because of the Jeff/Will thing...then piss off!!!

I hate to see threads not responded to. That's from the big walker meet...good times!!!

Yeah...a paint specialist! I'm not doing any body work on shotgun willie!!!

We'll need an impartial judge...I nominate Jeff!

Build off!?! A little "friendly" competition never hurts.

Don't know about the model, but some mazda 14's are about a perfect offset. Check out post #6 here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=95517&highlight=trail+wagon SJR makes a real nice 4 incher...I like it's light weight, and the 3" drop gives you 1" clearance over stock.

Have you noticed any extra heat or rattles from having the exhaust tucked up more? My exhaust sags and I was thinking of going up and over as well.

I've been on enough runs now to get some pretty good ones. Baker Lake 01/01/10 Custer PSE field 12/27/09 Walker Valley 11/07/09 Custer 'Baru B' Q. 7/26/09 Walker Valley 2/7/09

Great idea! If we decide to go that route, I'll be headed down to portland in a week. Think a slim fan would mount to the underside? The other option Scott came up with is to raise the rad. and support. That would not shorten it, but improve the approach angle.

I would check the relay after fuses.

With the cap off, squeeze the upper rad. and heater hoses to get out most of the air. You can also park nose up on a steep hill and run it, but that's never worked for me...seems to build up pressure and just dribbles water instead of air. Check your water regularly, and if any is missing at all, it may be a blown headgasket. Mine does that, and has never had water in the oil.

We had a great time, as usual!!! You guys do much on that last trail? I spotted a gravel pit of sorts on the left of that trail, coming back down, but we were done and low on gas. All the rest: http://s387.photobucket.com/albums/oo319/ericget/Baker%20Lake%20run%20Jan%201st%20%202010/?start=0

Nice! I had been up to goat eons ago, but never seen (or cared about) any good places to wheel. I'll have to hit that up on one of my oregon trips.

Wheel and bolt pattern exchange
SoobieDoo replied to esteveW's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Same bolt pattern, though your brat wheels may not clear the front calipers. I'd bring 'em just in case, or you could probably mount them on the rears. -
"Off Road" Light Install
SoobieDoo replied to eulogious's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's hard to tell from your small avatar, but isn't yours the newer style EA82? You know...sticks out like a foot, instead of the plastic covered tin foil one. There's not much room there to mount lights into steel. With the cover and foam off, you could carve out some foam and mount some extension brackets. -
What time, Jeff?

The pics are deceiving, but that's a stock wheelbase, so we don't want to make it any longer. Prob pull the rear seat and put a smaller gas tank there. Removable mud flaps for the rear. This thing will be light and powerful with an EJ in it.
-
HA!!!! Everyone's prob worried about their hangovers...but not me. Pam and I will make it.
-
Maybe, but I think the radiator should be relocated and the front chopped too.

Sorry Jeff, it was too late in the day this time. The kid was doing nothing but playing on the xbox, so we left after 2:00 and wheeled until dark. Normally I'd get a much earlier start, but being so close to home allows for this sort of thing. Next time I'll at least give you the chance.
