88 Justy onto Nissan 4x4 with a EJ
+1, I've never seen any mod like that in action. IDK about caging it though...It's not going to be a rockcrawler, and that would increase the weight quite a bit. Wouldn't that articulated rear actually prevent a roll-over?

15 inch wheel offset?
Try the faq in the off road section, but I'd try some 15" Nissan steelies. About a perfect offset on my rig, but that's EA82.

Vehicle Selection
^ +1 ...exactly my point in "modifying" GD's quote. It's easy enough to run EA82 axles on a hatch, and the wheelbase, weight, and departure angles are great...but it is not the only subaru worth offroading. I like the wagon mainly for it's cargo space, and departure has never been a prob with 4" of lift. (Don't ask my tailpipe, though)

98 OBS Junkyard Fix (Heavy on the pics)
Looks good. Of course it should be on a swing arm, to access the hatch. I'm doubting the stock bumper's ability to hold that much weight, though...maybe go with tube bumpers as well.

Vehicle Selection
For off-road purposes, you want an EA82 Wagon. The hatchback's break axles too easily. EA81 engine, SPFI or EJ22 swap (or Weber - but not as fun), 5 speed D/R, 4" lift. That will get you where you want to be in a hurry. Anything less..... you'll be wishing you have followed my advice in the first place very soon after taking it off-road. EG

Fuel return, early second gen EJ swap
Yeah, I've found the california cars to have a completely different fuel system. Mine's a '86, but they may still have some things in common. One filter only, at the tank. In my case, I believe the fuel return line to be causing tank pressure. It always had when the original hitachi was on, then it was disconnected with a weber on. No pressure, no leakage. Now with the EJ, it will not only pressurize the tank, but will leak. I think it's the higher pressure of the pump, and they're connected through the engine. Is flow coming from the firewall, or the engine side?

Are those the adjustable "cop style" spotlights? Nice ride, and we should wheel sometime when I'm up in Zig Zag next!

Not bad...have you rolled it yet to settle out the camber?

EJ22 swap Q's
Gas mileage isn't that bad, considering the 27" tires. I figured it out today, and put 87 miles on, topped off the tank, and came up with 23 mpg! The MAF is at least doing something, because the car will die when the plug is pulled. So I'm not as concerned with gas/limp mode now...pitch bar and exhaust work next.

No more low-riding for Guido...
EJ it....always wanted to say that!

EJ22 swap Q's
Time to work on getting her out of limp mode, if it's even in it. I'm getting a code for the MAF, and am hoping this is due to mismatched parts. I have a 5 wire connector and MAF, but if I'm correct, there are two different types of them for the early legacys. If the wrong one is used, then the 5th pin will ground out and cause the ecm to freak, so how can I identify and tell the two apart? I'm also getting a knock code, but it looks to be one of the old ones that likes to crack. At least it may be partially working, 'cause I am hearing no pinging or knocking in the least. Performance seems to be great...but this is coming from an EA82. Mainly I'm concerned about the limp 'cause of gas mileage. Just two trips to work, and I've already used a 1/4 tank.

Ej swap here we go a wiring

I ended up getting switched power from the black wire/ignition switch. Never even bothered to test it with the MM, assuming it was just ground. Water temp is real nice just hooked direct to the small, one prong temp sensor. No resistors needed, and Im getting nearly 1/4 on the gauge when fully warm...thanks Gloyale!!!- "Buck Fifty Brat" Build
Great price for a nice brat! Sounds like a solid plan for it too. How is the manastach ridge for wheelin?- Ej swap here we go a wiring
Well, at least I'm not the only one that didn't power the coil... but any probs guys have after this swap are simple fixes, for the most part.- Eric's trail wagon build, 56K b/w!
Did some more buttoning up of the EJ swap today. I found a massive fuel leak where a hose had come loose from the fuel pump. All it needed was a new clamp, but now my fuel gauge isn't working. That may be due to the gauge cluster just floating in place, though. Fixed the racing engine by loosening the throttle cable some and grounding the AT/MT pin off the ecm, and hooked up the speed signal to the cluster. It's getting there SLOWLY but surely!- Ej swap here we go a wiring
I had the same problem, but still haven't figured out the switched power yet...just been lazy and pulling the battery ground. Let me know if you find a solution for this, or I'll do the same if I get to it first. Glad you're up and runnin' now, feels great eh!?!- My New Wheeler Project.....Butters.......... **updated pics**
That hood scoop looks great, and should at least help with cooling. I likes the rear diff hanger too...looks beef. How is the front of it supported, if at all? I can't even tell for sure if you've trimmed the fenders yet, but if not, it doesn't look like it needs much! ~E - Ej swap here we go a wiring
