  1. I have no pics of it, but just unbolt the steering knuckle near the firewall, cut it in half, and weld it with pipe to fit. Be sure to use mild, low-carbon steel, and weld 'er up very well!!!
  2. That sux man! At least no one was hurt, with such a catastrophic failure. Were your rear axles bad to begin with? ~Eric
  3. The EJ swap is basically done. I still need to loom up the harness, ammo box the ECU, and get an aftermarket oil sender, but that doesn't keep it from getting me around. As an additional "upgrade", I'll be swapping out the ECU and MAF for the correct ones soon. Today I worked on comfort, by finally getting the legacy seats installed. Easiest mod so far, with the frame rail holes the same exact width. So by drilling new holes for the rear bolts, the rails bolt right on. They do sit a bit higher than the stock ones, but I'll like that for normal driving. I may just have to dork out and wear a helmet off-road, though. Yes, I know the color doesn't match, and the driver's seat is patched, but at least I won't have a numb a$$ anymore driving to Mt. Hood. So I'm a: Not much left on the original to do list...future plans are all pretty minor. Skid plate, exhaust, bumpers, cargo rack, and winch. Maybe a converted ABS front locker!?!
  4. No, not an off-road test yet...but at least you ate some raw fish for the waterwagon.
  5. Board Member: SoobieDoo Engine: '94 EJ22 Chassis: '86 GL Wagon Tranny: EA82 DR 5-speed Other: 4/3" SJR lift, 6-lug conversion, 27" AT2's on 15" Nissan steels, SJR adapter plate, welded diff, custom tow bar/bumper, lights, CB, etc. Future plans: Legacy seats, 2.25" cat-back exhaust into glasspack, custom roof rack, more lights, rear bumper...it never ends.
  6. Lookin' niiiiiiice, Austin! You will prob have to trim up the front at least, but that's to be expected.
  7. HAHAHAHA...love the tiny tire pics! Lookin very good
  8. Helloooooo... Do you happen to own a Subaru!?!
  9. Here's a good thread for tools and equip: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=97663

    Mt. Hood

Barlow trail would be great, if it had the right amount of snow. The trail's as long as you'd like it be, too
  11. +1, I've never seen any mod like that in action. IDK about caging it though...It's not going to be a rockcrawler, and that would increase the weight quite a bit. Wouldn't that articulated rear actually prevent a roll-over?
  12. And I quote from the previous thread: "it may not be a " Subaru" but for the record I dont really care" ~SJR
  13. Looks great!!! What's next on the long list?
  14. Try the faq in the off road section, but I'd try some 15" Nissan steelies. About a perfect offset on my rig, but that's EA82.
  15. ^ +1 ...exactly my point in "modifying" GD's quote. It's easy enough to run EA82 axles on a hatch, and the wheelbase, weight, and departure angles are great...but it is not the only subaru worth offroading. I like the wagon mainly for it's cargo space, and departure has never been a prob with 4" of lift. (Don't ask my tailpipe, though)
  16. Looks good. Of course it should be on a swing arm, to access the hatch. I'm doubting the stock bumper's ability to hold that much weight, though...maybe go with tube bumpers as well.
  17. For off-road purposes, you want an EA82 Wagon. The hatchback's break axles too easily. EA81 engine, SPFI or EJ22 swap (or Weber - but not as fun), 5 speed D/R, 4" lift. That will get you where you want to be in a hurry. Anything less..... you'll be wishing you have followed my advice in the first place very soon after taking it off-road. EG
  18. Yeah, I've found the california cars to have a completely different fuel system. Mine's a '86, but they may still have some things in common. One filter only, at the tank. In my case, I believe the fuel return line to be causing tank pressure. It always had when the original hitachi was on, then it was disconnected with a weber on. No pressure, no leakage. Now with the EJ, it will not only pressurize the tank, but will leak. I think it's the higher pressure of the pump, and they're connected through the engine. Is flow coming from the firewall, or the engine side?

Are those the adjustable "cop style" spotlights? Nice ride, and we should wheel sometime when I'm up in Zig Zag next!
  20. Not bad...have you rolled it yet to settle out the camber?
  21. Gas mileage isn't that bad, considering the 27" tires. I figured it out today, and put 87 miles on, topped off the tank, and came up with 23 mpg! The MAF is at least doing something, because the car will die when the plug is pulled. So I'm not as concerned with gas/limp mode now...pitch bar and exhaust work next.
  22. EJ it....always wanted to say that!
  23. Time to work on getting her out of limp mode, if it's even in it. I'm getting a code for the MAF, and am hoping this is due to mismatched parts. I have a 5 wire connector and MAF, but if I'm correct, there are two different types of them for the early legacys. If the wrong one is used, then the 5th pin will ground out and cause the ecm to freak, so how can I identify and tell the two apart? I'm also getting a knock code, but it looks to be one of the old ones that likes to crack. At least it may be partially working, 'cause I am hearing no pinging or knocking in the least. Performance seems to be great...but this is coming from an EA82. Mainly I'm concerned about the limp 'cause of gas mileage. Just two trips to work, and I've already used a 1/4 tank.
  24. Nice!!!...you should take a pic of the front camber, John.
