  1. Not nearly as cool as a CB but does anyone use those 2 way radios anymore? I have a couple of those and wouldnt mind carrying one or loaning one out so i can call for backup if needed. Compressor for filling back up for the ride home i assume? what about one of those portable air tanks (or something of that nature?) Have a couple straps and such and can grab some random lumber and a shovel. First time out on the dunes soooo it should be interesting.
  2. 90 legacy. Used to get 260-280 miles out of a tank. granted it needs a knock sensor but it was being pretty consistent. Over the last two or three tanks i have watched my miles per tank drop to near 200-220 or so. I have swapped on some other tires and they may have slightly altered the fuel mix for the colder weather but that seems like a bit much. The mileage change has also been gradual, didnt happen all at once when i swapped the tires on or anything. O2 sensor? could it be bad without throwing a code? I'm gonna do the knock sensor this week for sure and go from there i guess.
  3. So my girlfriend lives out in colton, could someone give me some basic directions to get up there? I think i know where you guys were but just curious. I've been up the road off 211 on the right as you leave colton, that eventually winds up a big hill. same place ish?
  4. Is this something that a non-lifted 1st gen legacy could do? I would love to come out and play and meet everyone, but I have a huge fear of getting way stuck.
  5. Well according to wix the 2.5 filter is the 4EAT filter as well (late model ones with the spin on) I would be interested to know if the tranny filter # is the same as the oil filter # from subaru. If someone has that information. I will probably gather parts this week and swap it all over next week. All that is needed is a remote oil filter mount and some fittings and hose. Cost should be under 50, maybe under 40 if the remote mount is cheap.
  6. another neat tool! Old lathes are the only way to go. Plenty of high quality machines just needing some love. now you just need a milling machine to complete the collection!
  7. YAY! Cant wait. Did 3 last year and loved every second. This year I'm gonna have a slightly better setup and will be at every race.
  8. I found the perfect tool for the job. It was a insert that fit into a ratcheting wrench (12 or 13mm) and had a 3/8" drive on the other side. Attach a normal length 12mm socket and it fits in the access hole with intake fully assembled. http://s.sears.com/is/image/Sears/00999648000-1?hei=600&wid=600&op_sharpen=1&qlt=90,0&resMode=sharp&op_usm=0.9,0.5,0,0 Made by gearwrench, called a wrench drive adapter. Bought the set of three for under 20 bucks i think.
  9. Thanks! Lots of good info there. Not to sound rude, but how do you know that about the filter? have you seen the inside? I might just cut one up, for scientific purposes. Do the universal transmission filter setups just use a engine oil filter? I want something fine enough to catch a lot of the junk but i'm worried a engine oil filter will clog to soon, or require short change intervals. Edit: http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=51365 That is the Wix filter listing for the spin on filter on the tranny. Its just a generic oil filter. Looks to be the same as the 2.5 oil filter. Very interesting...
  10. Well, as i explained the external filter is a 50 dollar part. Its specific to the car. I should be able to use a oil or hydraulic filter that is super common and way easier to change while being several times cheaper. I think the filter should be changed on my car, but if i can upgrade to a spin on for the same or less money is seems like a good idea. Why not? I don't have a gauge currently, but would make provisions for one if i add a cooler and filter setup. That is why i was asking about the thermostat as some cars have one plumbed into the stock system. If that were the case i would get a decent sized cooler and let the thermostat do the work. Possibly i can locate a aftermarket one as i understand fluid that is to cold is just as bad as hot fluid. This a stock system and tranny right now. No problems currently but the fluid surely needs to be changed. Who knows when the filter was last replaced. I just see an opportunity for improvement and wanna see if other people have done the same. Thoughts? I'm sure someone has hooked a tranny temp guage up to a 4EAT before, did they see any reason to add a cooler?
  11. Looking for info on the external transmission filter that was retrofitted on the early legacy's. I would like to replace it with a spin on filter of some sort and dont really know where to start. I guess i can go talk to the local hydraulic shop but not sure if they will know much about fluid systems for cars. Mostly looking for flow, pressure and micron ratings. Local autoparts place can get me a Wix one but its nearly 50 dollars. I can buy a spin on adapter and some fittings for that price. Will be installing a small cooler at the same time, is there any kind of thermostat currently in the system? Thanks guys.
  12. is this procedure roughly the same for a 1st gen legacy? Car has 247k on it so I'm sure the motor is dying but if its this easy to clean and check i will do that first.
  13. Just a thought guys but if you have water up over your engine enough to need a snorkel that goes to the roof, you will have lots of other issues i would think. Diff and tranny vents, floor vents, electrical stuff on the engine etc...
  14. Well, they only call for sealant because they don't make a gasket anymore, because people could get the same result with sealant. Therefor he isn't doing any harm at all, just making sure he doesn't have to do it again. Technically he did use sealant.
  15. I only use Wix filters on my Subaru's, mostly because I can't find Mann filters locally. I use Mann on all my euro cars and they seem to be pretty high quality. Wix seems to come close and the local auto parts chain has pretty much every size, including the "big" filters I use. http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=51334 That is the stock filter http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=51344 That is the one i use if they have it in stock. Either one seems to do the job just fine. Really I would like a second bypass filter but since this is a high mile NA engine worth a couple hundred at best i don't see the point. Remote mounting however would be quite handy. As nice as it is to change the oil without covering the engine in oil its still scary having that filter just hang out down there. Edit: Does anyone have any insights into cartridge vs spin-on filters? My BMW uses a cartridge filter in a housing mounted on the front of the engine. Seems like a lot more up front manufacturing cost vs a spin-on fitting and gasket surface.
  16. Bosch microedges. They last one rainy season here (6-8 months). Plus side is they are only 5 or 6 bucks a piece. I've tried the 20+ dollar blades and they all crap out after a season. However, consumer reports voted the valeo 600 the best out of the ones they tested.
  17. Good to know, I will be taking care of that asap. So, dumb question, where is this purge solenoid?
  18. I've had a check engine light on for about a year now and never worried about it much because the car runs great and i've had plenty of other things to worry about. So the other day i pull the codes and i've got a code 22 (knock sensor) and 35 (something about a purge valve?) Background info: I have about 1k miles on my new head gaskets and the whole engine was pulled to change them. Wiring was messed with and unplugged and such. Car seems to run similar to before, maybe with a bit more pep. What is this purge valve? I don't really care about ti as long as it won't effect engine performance. I have read on here about the knock sensor wiring being really iffy, what can i do to help this? Can i check the sensor itself before replacing it for resistance? What about checking the output from the ECU? Is the computer retarding timing and doing other bad things because of this error code? Thanks guys. Hope to get this taken care of so i can fix this low idle problem.
  19. Ya, i understand, just was curious about the area. I've always really liked West Linn and the surrounding area, I too will likely be here for a good while. I just barely remember the sentry, I remember it more as a Thriftway. I think so. I will pull it out of my storage unit in the next couple days and give it a once over and see what i can find. If you have someone that is more familiar with TIG then maybe he could check it out too, let you know if its gonna be something useful or not. Ya, I have a pretty open schedule and I am always interested in meeting local people. I only have one subaru (for now) a first gen legacy. Had an 89 DL I managed to mangle and then sell. You may have seen it, last winter in the snow I managed to hit a parking curb by the subway at a decent amount of speed. Bent the control arm and broke the axle, and bent the unibody where the control arm attached. Sat in the Albertsons lot for a couple weeks, then Les Schwab for a few more. Shoot me a PM of when your free, I can drag some of that stuff over and maybe check out the collection if you dont mind showing off.
  20. Find a big area outside, rent the blasting equipment and do it yourself. Or find a good shop to do it quick. I use a shop in portland that has a one hour min at 50 bucks, and so far i've never used more then that one hour.
  21. Even went to the high school! Very funny. I lived in west Linn till i was 22, born and raised. Not trying to be nosey but what part? I grew up over in Willamette on ostman. Right where they just built those 23 or so new houses. Lived off sunset for the last couple years before moving to LO. I had a welder (before moving somewhere where i couldn't) and honestly you almost need a torch if you have a welder. Really completes the package. I have some pictures somewhere of the unit. I would say your best bet (and my plan) was to pick up a real nice (and large) power supply off craigslist for cheap and use that. Then you just need a torch and a foot pedal. The box isn't in perfect condition, i think both of the flow meters for the gas are in need of repair or replacement and there are some other little things IIRC. Haven't messed with it in a good while. I would be willing to pass it on to you for next to nothing if you plan to actually try and use it (and maybe for some welding and cutting demo's )
  22. Have a few hundred miles on it now. No coolant loss, not much oil loss (It is still at 245k mile motor) Seems to be running great, except for thing, my idle seems to be a bit low. The car vibrates more now then before and the idle in gear is around 500. Not the worst thing in the world but kind of annoying in traffic. Any ideas?
  23. Not that you care but i grew up in west linn, you live there currently? I live in lake oswego now, always funny reading that someone lives so close. On a related note, sweet setup! I have always wanted a good oxy/acetylene torch, they just seem so damn useful. I too usually deal with quimby in tualatin. Good people and they have always been honest and helpful. Considering I made my first large purchase there when i was a teenager, thats saying alot. Most places wouldn't give me the time of day. Looks like you have plenty of welding and cutting fun in your future! Edit: and while I'm new here and you dont know scat about me i think i have some good stuff for your home made tig project. I picked up a high frequency box a couple years ago to use for a tig setup. Never got around to using it and its collecting dust in my storage unit. It needs some TLC but its a sweet machine and with a good power supply(ac/dc) and torch i think you could have a very sweet setup for thousands less than it would cost normally.
  24. the cat is towards the front of the car. It will have an o2 sensor before and after it. They are probably right, i think all OBD2 cars have two o2 sensors. Yup, there is a listing for a front and back. Sounds like you need the other one. But, how did you determine it was the o2 to begin with?
