Woohoo PARTS ARE HERE!
Steveman09 replied to Steveman09's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Update: Now I'm just waiting for Delta to send me the cams and everything is pretty much ready to go! I also got a new XT6 Clutch Kit For it Today so hopfully that will help put the HP to the ground a little better than the EA82 Clutch, I hear I'm going to need to machine my flywheel to XT6 Specs or get an XT6 Flywheel which is lighter but extremly hard to find I hear. I went through the entire engine bay last night and cleaned every ground wire and replaced any nasty looking wires with new wire, so the wiring is pretty much done, I just need to get some Wire Covers to make it all neat. I'm getting excited, its allmost ready to drive! -
The BRASS brushes will be fine on aluminum, its the steel brushes you have to worry about. I've been cleaning heads at work (SOA Tech) for years and never had an issue yet.
-
Do this : Clean the Block and Head throughly with a BRASS wire brush and razor blade, some carb cleaner helps break up the carbon, then check the block and head with a streight edge for warpage. This will tell you if you need a new block or the head needs to be sent out. If you have .003 or more then thats too much.

These gaskets do not have the grove around the cylinders that requires the block to be machined to match, these have o-ring inserts around all the coolant and oil passages to prevent coolant and oil mixing as well as external leaks that pleauge these motors. The compression rings are all very well designed and shouldn't be an issue. -

Woohoo PARTS ARE HERE!

More Progress tonight : Well everything is going smooth so far, assembled both heads, lapped in the valves, put the heads on the motor and torqued them all down. I'm waiting on the cams from delta, there in the mail and should be here any day. Tomarrow im fitting the TD04 on with the new flange and welding it all together, basically I measured everything out today and test fit the turbo on the motor, and I'm going to have to raise the turbo UP about 3/4inch, to clear the dogdone bracket, I also had to relocate the EGR Soleniod. So what I'm going to do is CUT off the studs on the stock turbo flange, then grind it all down smooth, then I'm going to CUT off the outter stud part of the flange, about 1 inch of it needs to be removed, then the new TD04 Flange can sit directly on top of the ground down stock flange which will bring the turbo UP 3/4inch and cutting that part of the stock flange allows the outter bolt hole on the new TD04 Flange to fit. Intercooler piping should be easy, looks as I need (1) 90degree Elbow (2.25inch Turbo Inlet to Intake) , (1) 90degree elbow (2.50inch Throttle Body to IC) and some streight pieces to fill in the gaps. Coolant Feed and Return Fittings on the TD04 are angled differenly, this is OK but puts lots of extra stress on the hoses because of the ODD bends, so I swapped the Coolant Pipes from the STOCK turbo to the TD04 and everything is perfect now. Well im beat for tonight, enjoy the pics, More to come tomarrow! -

Running temperature on EA82T ?
Steveman09 replied to habib99's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This is the way I did mine : I installed 2 (30) Amp Heavy Duty Relays, I ran power to them right to the battery with (2) 30 AMP Fuses in between. Then I wired each fan to 1 of the relays. Then I tapped a signal wire into the Thermoswitch in the radiator and wired them to the (2) Fan Relays I installed, so that when the coolant temp gets to 203F both fans kick on and off automatically. The fan on the switch idea worked until I let a buddy drive the car and he overheated it because he forgot what I told him about the fans. I also installed a third relay for the A/C, I wired it to the ECU A/C Signal Wire, so that when the A/C kicks on both fans also come on so the A/C works normally and the engine doesnt overheat with the a/c on. It sounds complicated but this is the right way to do it and I love it, much better cooling control with this system, this is the way most all modern cars are done. -

The springs came from a local guy I found through a friend, he said he got them from Paeco a long time ago and never got around to building his project. He sold em to me for $100, which is a good deal since there are 16 springs on the ea82-t's and OEM's go for around $150. I'm tearing the motor out right now as I type so I will post some more pics tonight before I goto bed. More to come! -

Running temperature on EA82T ?
Steveman09 replied to habib99's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I did the Dual Electric Fan Conversion on my Ea82-T. I'm runnin the 2-row HD Radiator and I wired up my own relays for A/C and such. The Thermoswitch kicks on at 203F, the motor runs between 190-203F -
EA82-T Performance Cams
Steveman09 replied to Steveman09's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah I posted this a few posts back, with the 272 cams you need engine managment so the car can idle and deal with the changes in airflow. -
EA82-T Performance Cams
Steveman09 replied to Steveman09's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just called Delta Cams and talked with the guy, we came to the conclusion that the 272 grind would be best for my engine, and he said thats because I have Engine Managment and the Bigger Turbo. He said it should scream with my mods. He also said the 260 is about as big as you can go with stock engine managment before things get tricky. They want $71 per cam to regrind them and turn around is about 2 days tops. I'm gonna go ahead and do it, I will post dyno results when I get the motor back up and running. -
Hey guys I have been searching for people who have used the Delta Cam Grinds in thier EA82-T's but havent found much. My questions are : Has anyone installed Delta 260 or 272's in the EA82-T's? If so, does the motor finally make power past 5000rpm? Also how is the top end? I'm seriously considering the 272 grind when I get a new set of Gen3 Heads, since I have the TD04 Turbo, Intercooler, Injectors, Ignition and Engine Managment I think it will work out nice, but wanted to hear a few opinions first. Low end power isnt that important to me since right now I have ALL LOW END and NO HIGH END, end result I'm great until the end of 2nd gear then things change. Plus if I had tons of high end I wouldn't have to launch it at 4k rpm's just to make sure I got the ground from the start, I could just launch easy then let the powerband take over Thanks in advance.

Well after just putting on a brand new set of Bridgestone tires, I decided to tackle my leaking turbo coolant hose (lower PITA one) And fix my exhaust leaks (gaskets) at the heads at the same time, everything was going smooth until I looked up into the passenger side head exhaust port, what did I see? Nice and wet inside and a long crack extending upward, this is where you could clearly see coolant seeping out. I noticed it looses coolant slowly over time but since I pressure tested the cooling system and got that turbo coolant hose to drip I was sure that was it. Well it was it but not all of it! I'm so pissed off right now its not even funny, this project was very long and exspensive, I've invested $3k into the Engine and Engine Managment and now this. I do want to fix it, but now I have to find (2) Cylinder Heads in good condition with no problems, I can't replace just the one head since they were both Ported, Polished and had 3-angle valve jobs done on them. So I need (2) Stock Heads, they can be bare. If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it, I'm willing to pay whatever it takes within reason. I thought about ditching this EA82 Block and swapping an EJ22-T or EJ20-T into the car but my EA82 block has nothing wrong with it and I just rebuilt it shortly ago, doesnt burn a drop of oil and has all new OEM subaru internals including a complete blueprint and balance. Well enough venting for now, just had to get some frustration out. If you have any heads in good shape please contact me : AIM: PHWSTEVEMAN09 EMAIL: Steveman09@comcast.net Thanks

Please Help 5-lug Conversion!
Steveman09 replied to Steveman09's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I know about the USRM, but appartently I has some inaccurate information, this comes from people who attempted the conversion. Thats why I'm trying to find input from people who have done it themselfs to make sure I get the right parts before I blow a bunch of time and money on this project.
