EA82T Injector Impedance? High or Low?
Steveman09 replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
high -
Yeah I'm glad to help since I had no help when I did my swap and I was just told it bolts right up, I bought a XT6 Clutch Kit to find out it wouldn't work, then had to spend another $160 on an EA82 Clutch Kit and ended up with 2 clutches!! Let's just say I had a bad week after that.
-
I "attempted" this swap when I did my D/R Manual Conversion, and found out the hard way you have to use the following components to make it work properly : XT6 Complete Clutch Kit (Disc, PP, RB) XT6 Flywheel <---This is KEY since the stepping depth is different from a regular EA82 Flywheel Other than that its bolt on and will give you better performance since the Flywheel from the XT6 is lighter and the clutch has aprx. 5-10% more holding power. Not much but still worth it if your allready there doing the job.

whay NASIOC sucks again....(rant inside)
Steveman09 replied to iluvdrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I agree 100% -
When I rebuilt my EA82 I too had the big cracks between the valves on both heads, I then ported the heads out even bigger and had them pressure tested to extreme PSI and they passed with flying colors. No problems.

Oil Recomendations?? Lifter Noise.
Steveman09 replied to froggymike's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Subaru did state back in the 1980's that 5w30 was fine for EA82's but they later issued a TSB changing the information to : 5w30 only under normal driving conditions 10w30 for heavy duty or high speed driving This is a classic "I dont want to admit I was wrong, but lets suggest another option so that if engines die we can refer to it being said" EA82' Motor's run best with 10w30 SAE Motor Oil, its been proven lots of times so long as the motor is not completly worn out or has bad rings. -
Oil Recomendations?? Lifter Noise.
Steveman09 replied to froggymike's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You guys need to remember that EA82 Engine's were designed to use 10w30, the Oil passeges, bearings, cam towers, lifter oil supply lines, etc were machined to a certain size where a thicker oil will not be able to flow properly, thus increasing engine wear. If you have lifter noise you need to fix the problem rather than switch to thicker oil to shut it up, doing this might shut them up for awhile but your also doing more damage to the engine internals where as letting them tick would actually be better. There are a few things that cause lifter noise on EA82's : 1. Oil Pump Failing (low pressure) 2. Oil Pump Seal Leaking (air in system) 3. Lifter Oil Supply Line clogged with debris (located in cam towers) 4. Lifter(s) bad The lifters are pretty tough in the EA82's and usually dont fail, 9 times out of 10 I have found #3 to be the problem after checking the oil pump and finding it to be good and supplying good pressure. -
do pistons have to match cylinders?
Steveman09 replied to teasdam's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There is one more step that everyone is missing about Ring installation, you must make sure when installing rings on a piston that you offset each ring from each other by about 90degrees. Some manufactors even have a spec on how many degrees each ring should be from each other. I rebuilt my EA82-T from scratch with all new parts and assembled it myself and did the ring offsetting I learned from a 20-year SOA Tech. My ea82-t is not burning any oil and never did even from day 1 when the motor was first installed. Within 3000miles I dont even burn 1/8th of a qt. If you have a few of the ring gaps in the same spot oil will pass through thus making excessive oil consumption. Start simple first tho : 1. Replace your oil cap since thats what they do when the seal gets old 2. Replace your PCV Valve with a Subaru OEM 3. Inspect PCV Hose Routing and Replace cracked or clogged hoses Then if you still have issues tear it down. Emily is right about normal break-in oil consumption to a point, It's normal for a "NEW" engine to use SOME oil during the first 500miles or so. But it should QUICKLY go away after that, I would say 1/2qt to 1 full qt. AT THE MOST within the first 500miles would be ok. -
What is the EA82 oil capacity?
Steveman09 replied to SakoTGrimes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Because the engine is DRY thus requires more oil. You never get 100% of the oil out of the motor from pulling the plug. -

4 to 4.5qts Put 4 in, start the engine and run it at 2500rpm for 30seconds, shut it off and let it sit for 1min then check dipstick. FILL UNTIL AT TOP DOT. -

WRX Intercooler Installed!
Steveman09 replied to Steveman09's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah its not easy cleaning up old cars and making them shine, I've put in some serious time and effort to make mine so clean, when I had the engine out I pressure washed the entire engine bay and scrubbed it, to maintain it I wash the engine bay every month. I just got done Cut and Buffing all the scratches out from WCSS7 and she's really shining now, I hand waxed the whole car too, just today I've gotten 3 offers from people wanting to buy it, LOL I have more plans for the turbo setup, I still havent gotten my TD04 installed yet so I'm waiting until then to finalize the intercooler piping and mounting, I will be doing the hood scoop very soon tho. I'll post some more pics tonight of what the car looks like now after the Buffing and waxing, its shining like a new car now -
Well I finally got around to installing my WRX TMIC w/HKS SSQV, I went down to home depot and fabricated up some high temp ABS plastic piping to make it all work, the end result is nice, much faster on the highway now and lots of low end in cool weather I even modified one of my washer nozzels to spray water down onto the fins Let me know what ya think :

ok I updated the site and fixed it, so now ALL of the pics and movies are there. Enjoy -
Just got the pics from WCSS7 upload and ready for viewing. This was the first time I really got to see what my GL-10 could do out in the woods and I as well as many others were really impressed. It did awesome and I never had any trouble anywhere, it seems the factory air ride adjustable suspension works EXCELLENT OFFROAD, whenever I was articulating to one side it would automatically start to try and level the car out for me helping me out many times I allways had all 4 tires on the ground where as many others only had 2. Enjoy the pics and movies! http://subaru.purehardware.com/images/wcss7

I was also like to add that I had lots of fun. The Show and Shine was OK but I really enjoyed the offroading adventure that me and about 6 other cars went on towards the end of the day on Saturday It was a blast! In the future we need more offroad events imho. -
I'll be there with my GL-10
