Which engines will be direct bolt in for 90 Legacy
THAWA replied to coloradosubarules's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwait wait wait, you're going to buy a new engine, replace the stuff you need to replace on your current one on the new one and then swap it in? I don't see this being very advantageous, time or money wise. But they switched to obdii in 96

transaxle photos
THAWA replied to daveheld's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXa subaru tranny is long. Using it as a mid engine with a fwd sube tranny wouldnt be the best idea. Even a fwd subaru tranny is long. It'd stick out too much over the rear wheels, you'd probably be better off going with a rear engine design with the trans in the center. But then you might as well stick with your porsche setup.

SVX or Legacy Turbo?
THAWA replied to ShawnW's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXit's already sold I think also I agree with josh, why would you swap out the largest, most unique, only non-interference dohc production engine subaru ever made, and probably the most engineered, for a 4 cyl?

New Guy ?'s
THAWA replied to bnhcooper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXsomeone must've ripped your sticker off then. it's an r160 though that makes no difference as all rear's cept sti's are r160's. What do you mean by, what "type"? The dipstick for you front differential is on the passanger side of the trans housing. It'll either be yellow (mostlikely) or black with a long handle and say diff on it. While we're on it, your ATF dipstick is on the opposite side of the trans case in the same general area, mostlikely black with ATF (DEXRON II) or III on it. And just so you know you can find all this info in your owners manual. You should read it sometime, it's very informative.

Bubbles in coolant reserve tank
THAWA replied to TeamPanic's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXunfortunately your car was overheating, if it weren't the level in the coolant wouldn't had risen. THe gauge just didnt show the change in temperature.

Bubbles in coolant reserve tank
THAWA replied to TeamPanic's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe headgaskets don't have to blow between the water and oil passages, oftentime they blow between the cyl ring and the water passage, so you wouldnt get oil in the coolant or vice versa.

New Guy ?'s
THAWA replied to bnhcooper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf you know your way around an engine you can just look at the timing covers, if you see what looks like two circles on each side of the engine it's dohc, if you only see one circle it's a sohc. Or you can look at where the spark plugs enter the head, if it's in the middle of the head, parallel to the ground, perpendicular to the frame, it's a dohc, if they enter more to the top (when looking at the engine as it's mounted), at an angle to the ground or frame, it's a sohc. Even if it's a phase II I'd still be worried, at least put aside some money if the hg's go. Or just replace it before it happens. As far as the differential/tranny go. It should be a phase II 4eat ( I believe there were only two phases phase I was up to obdII IIRC, someone correct me if I'm wrong), the rear diff should be an r160, if you'd like to know the ratio just peek at the sticker on the rear diff (if you line up your head with your bumper and bend down a couple more inches, look straight ahead and you should see it, might have to wipe it off depending on your driving style ), it'll say 3.900 or 4.111 or 4.444 or something, almost assuredly one of those though. While you're down there, could you check to see if it says VISCOUS or VLSD or LSD or LIMITED-SLIP or something like that on there. Good luck.

2.5 L Vs. 2.5 L
THAWA replied to fweem1970's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe STi block, doesnt have an extra bracing between the cylinders, it has bracing between the cyl walls and the deck. The short blocks of the sti and the outback 2.5xt are the same, most of the othr stuff is different though. What do you want the measurements for? If you're planning to put it into another car yes it'll fit.

EJ20 in my 90 legacy wagon
THAWA replied to coloradosubarules's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXdepends what car it's from, if it's an ej20g you'll just have a few wires to add to the harness, if it's an ej205 or ej207 you'll have more problems with wiring.

Whats in there????
THAWA replied to coloradosubarules's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX91 turbo is the only year to have a LSD as an option, 4eat, or 5mt doesnt matter. It was an option, and while almost all do have them it was still an option. No other years came with them. period Only 91! To reiteriate unless it's a 1991 subaru legacy sport sedan (which yours isn't going by your sig) dont count on it having a LSD in the rear. Even if the car is a 1991 subaru legacy sport sedan dont count on it having a LSD it was an option. Only an option. Wasn't standard. I'm sure someone else will ask again, so just to say it again. 1991 Subaru Legacy Sport Sedan (Turbo) only year with Rear LSD as an OPTION Also From what I've seen only the auto xt6's had LSDs Can't say for sure if it was an option or not,but I haven't seen one on a manual. Also all SVX's came with LSDs and as we all know they're all autos. 00-01 RS's came with LSD auto or manual. All WRX's have them aswell auto or manual. Some Legacy GT's and Outbacks also.

Need Opinions--EJ20 vs. EJ25
the "G" blocks stopped getting made sometime between 94-96 (aside from the 22b) There is only one semi closed block, 257. If you'd like to disprove me please post a picture, or a factual link. I'll gladly eat my words.

Im sure someone else said it but you do know what the baja is right?

Need Opinions--EJ20 vs. EJ25
the ej207 is open. There are only two closed decks, 22g and 20g, and one semi, 257 also the na ej25's ARE notorious for headgasket problems
