Poll: High compression turbo life
Forkspear replied to kingbobdole's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I vote A C and G I lost the rings in one cylinder so I swapped a carbed block from the junkyard. It wasnt the greatest. It had 146k I think. It lasted a couple trips to town on stock boost. About a week later I gave it 12 pounds and went for a freeway run. Got finished and it ran like crap. Not wanting to deal with it i just keep driving. I dont think it has been six months yet. It still ran a 15.6. I beat two 5.0s and a 4.6 from a roll 2 weeks ago. Being slow is annoying so im going to put rings in my old block with turbo pistons. No more of this high compression crap. Well maybe with stock boost it would be alright on something im not going to hotrod around all the time. -
A while back I read a post about putting a legacy 4eat in an ea82 car. They said the bellhousing interchanged. Im sure the torque converters are the same too.

since it is an 86 you probably have a flapper maf. if you do the tps is different than the mpfi picture shown above. the newer tps wont work. the old tps has and idle switch and a wot(Wide Open Throttle) switch. the new tps has an idle switch and a potentiometer. no wot switch. it might work but you might get a check engine light. i have this same problem. i am putting a 4eat into an 86 turbo wagon. the 4eat needs the potentiometer but the engine needs the wot switch. EDIT just noticed you have wiring from 87 or is just the manifold wiring 87?

Air Bags, not Air Suspension ones. . .
Forkspear replied to KNIGHTRIDER's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
uh, whatever dude I don't like air bags and I don't like to wear my seat belt. Mostly because the government tries to make me. An air bag is almost like a shot gun pointed at me. If you set an air bag face down on the ground and set it off it goes like 30 feet into the air. I don't want that hitting me in the face. Anyway the SRS uses a its own special bright yellow wiring harness with several crash sensors. At school they told us you are not supposed to cut or splice the harness. It has to be replaced if something is wrong. So I dont recommend trying to add airbags because you would probably have to cut the harness and the airbag might blast you in the face if you dont wire it right. -
Yeah me too. Is there any way to move the seats closer to the floor?

88 turbo a/t cross over pipe question
Forkspear replied to 86subaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a pipe that was warped at the head. The gasket would always leak between the studs. I stripped out the head trying to tighten it, thinking it was still loose. Fixed the threads and just lived with it. When the pipe was down for some other reason I pounded on the ends of the flange where the holes are with a hammer to flatten it out. Seems to work fine. -

Anyone have 4eat wiring diagram?
Forkspear replied to Forkspear's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Chris Rogers: No not right now I might put the car back together someday. Wouldn't shipping be expensive from here? Thanks for the link. I found a diagram in the fsm for an 88 xt over on XT6.net but it has some small differences from yours. Mine doesn't show the cruise control and some other things are in a different place. Some of the plugs are different too. I uploaded it to my photo gallery. Someone put it together on 1 page. -
As long as the hose you used doesn't melt you should be fine I think. It is for the egr. The heads are the same casting the other head doesn't have the hole drilled and tapped for the tube. If you look there is probably a spot where it could be drilled and tapped. but i wouldn't worry about it the hose should be fine. If not just plug it. As long as everything else bolted up you should be alright.

Ratio of running vs. non-running subarus
Forkspear replied to Snowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
lol more like a collection. most of them were given to me. i recently added two turbo wagons they will run soon 87 gl10 blown head gasket came with 85 wagon with no tranny for parts. i bolted a bell housing to the motor and it started right up. leaks water from the water pump o ring. im going to put in a ft4wd 4spd auto from my xt parts car soon. i just need a wiring diagram to figure out how to wire it. -
I recently aquired an 85 gl turbo wagon with no tranny. It was a 3spd auto. I have an 87 xt gl-10 turbo parts car with a 4eat. I need the wiring diargram to see if it splices into the engine ecm anywhere. Anyone have it?

Springs Rockers Lobes OH MY! HELP!!!
Forkspear replied to SuBrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a valve stick on my rx after a rebuild. If I tapped on the spring it popped it popped back out. Smacked it with a hammer until it stopped sticking. I put 35k miles on it. Was still working when i tore it down. It was slightly bent. Try bouncing a hammer off the stuck springs. They might free up and work. -
I just got my motor back together with a carb block and turbo 300zx injectors. According to my air fuel gauge im almost running lean. The car felt slower during the first test drive. It goes to the lean side of normal in the upper rpms where before it used to be rich. I hooked up my 5th injector and some power came back. Not quite normal yet. Im going to put my old injectors back in tomorrow and see.

Paint code of L series White
Forkspear replied to Chris Rogers's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The code on my 87 RX Coupe is 544(it was faded) and the 88 RX is 828. Hope that helps. Here is the only picture I have on the computer. -
Anyone try the stuff on page 13?

How many of you have low mileage EA82T.
Forkspear replied to Gl-boost's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have a 109k turbo xt motor in a wagon with 150k -
I spun a bearing in an EA82T, but it was an old engine from the shop that had gas in the oil. Drove it home and parked it. The boss let his daughter's boyfriend drive his GL-10, it didn't come back on its own. The two front pistons and rodds were destroyed and the block was broken. I have a carbed wagon with a rod sticking out the top. I think the rings are gone in my RX. Too much boost for too long i suspect.

FWD Turbo 4eat XT? Rare?
Forkspear replied to RallyKeith's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I pulled the motor and front struts off a 2wd 4eat XT at the junkyard. It was a turbo spyder. -
Rear differential bushings ??
Forkspear replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the full time 4wd bushing is larger than the part time bushing. -
Ratio of running vs. non-running subarus
Forkspear replied to Snowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
2 RX's registered 5 move themselves and could be registered but 1 needs a title 1 waiting for a motor 12 for parts some could run but i haven't checked -
Got me a full spyder intake now
Forkspear replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That sounds like the auxillary air valve. It idles the engine up when it is cold. The one on my spyder did not work so its gone and the hose has a spark plug in it. When the engine is cold it will not idle very well without it or maybe my idle is set too low. Your check engine light might come on if you unplug it.
