K&N drop in filter number?
Forkspear replied to smotocon1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Go with the 33-2010. Thats the number I got when my friend looked up the number. That filter should work with any older fuel injected subaru. I just looked up the numbers on the K&N website. The 33-2232 is the wrong filter. It is for a legacy. The 33-2010 is the right filter. I compared the measurements from K&N with a fram filter I had sitting around. They are the same. -
On my 86 wagon the grill is held on by screws from the front. On my 87 rx I have no grill but it is held on completly different. Two plastic push tabs with a screw in the middle hold it on from the top. As far as I know any 85 to 86 grill would work. 87 and newer would require some kind of modification.

i sense the end of my sooby

Not opening the throttle will just show you less compression than what you really have. 160 is great. -
Knock Knock....Need help
Forkspear replied to XTcollector's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My rx would run with a bad knock sensor. but it is the one wire type. -
I run regular in all my turbo cars and they run fine.

I saw that on ebay a few months ago for $1000. No one bid.

WRX exhaust on 88 GL-10?
Forkspear replied to raceman77's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey welcome to the board. You aren't too far away from where I live. I just bought a wrx "offroad" downpipe and midpipe to use with my wrx turbo when I put the rx together. Doesn't have any cats. I haven't got it yet so I don't know how it fits. That wouldn't happen to be the GL-10 that was on ebay in Colorado would it? Thats how my exhaust was for a while. The factory downpipe muffles the sound alot. I replaced it with a pipe pointed at the ground. It sounds mean after the turbo spools. -
snag on the clutch/trans install...confirm please?
Forkspear replied to ShawnW's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would use the ea82 flywheel with ea81 bolts. I know the throwout bearings are the same size on the two flywheels. I needed a flywheel when I put the turbo wagon back together. I found an ea81 flywheel. It was going to work fine until I tryed to bolt it up. The holes lined up but they were too small for ea82 bolts. -
Another thing. A loose timing belt will make a knock like sound.
-
A knocking rod won't make it run bad. It just makes noise until it breaks. My rx started knocking and it will fire right up and run just as good as before.

I have heard a vavle stick on a rebuilt ea82. It sounded just like it was a rod. Started it up the next day and it was gone. But your engine sounds like every lifter is ticking if it was idling. What rpm was the recording at? The lifters will tick for a while when you first start it up if they are full of air. If its just the lifters I wouldn't worry about it. They should quiet down. It won't do any harm. Did you plastigauge the bearings?

My 88 RX started doing that same thing a few days ago. Runs good when cold then slows down after it warms up. I think I have a boost leak. If I ease onto the gas I can hear rushing air before the turbo begins to spool. Im going to work on it tomorrow if I get a break at work. Ill let you know if I find something.

Two people should be able to lift the short block easily. I have picked up a short block by my self and set it on a table. Its not very heavy.

Nice buildup. Almost exactly what I plan to do. I have the manifold, the turbo, and Im getting ready to buy cams. Still need an intercooler. I need to rebuild my bottom end first. It started knocking two weeks ago. I read on another board somewhere that you can clock the turbo and bolt on the wastegate acuator with one bolt. On my td04 I drilled the turbo to bolt onto the factory flange. Looks like it will work fine but I haven't tried it yet. Hope it turns out good.

how do you define an addiction?

LOL I have six in front of my house too. Then there is a few at the ranch and a couple at the shop. -
84 GL sedan 266k original engine and tranny. Changed the original clutch at 220k. 86 DL wagon 332k 2nd engine and tranny. Its age is starting to show.

I ran a jumper wire from the black ground wire on the wiper motor to a bolt on the strut tower. Worked fine until I had to use the jumper wire to make the engine run.

The pipe is smaller inside. At the bend going down it gets smaller. My exhaust is just the first bend and then a pipe in place of the cat. The pipe ends there instead of bending back. No cat or muffler. It flows a lot better than just the cat and no muffler. It ended just before the second cat before I changed it. The downpipe cat muffles the sound and prevents flow a lot. I noticed an increase in power. I can hear the turbo real good too. I also get a pop and a flame when I let off the gas.

I just ran into this problem at my work last week on a 99 Crown Victoria cop car. There was no compression in one cylinder. I pulled off the intake manifold and when it cranked compression came back out through the intake port. The intake valve wasn't closing because it was dished. This makes the stem longer too. You probably have the same problem.

Diff lock wont turn off
Forkspear replied to xforxlifex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I figured out most of the vacuum lines. My heater works. There was one line that would act like WOT when i connected it to a vacuum source. I would connect it and start the car and it would rev up by itself. It went to 5k in a few seconds and would have kept going if I hadn't turned it off. -
Diff lock wont turn off
Forkspear replied to xforxlifex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have the same issue sort of. My diff lock doesn't turn on. It used to work but then I pulled my engine a few times and now it doesn't work. I know I didn't get all the vacuum lines back in the right place. That might be part of my problem. -
How to open hood with busted hood latch
Forkspear replied to blaster88's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes you push it towards the drivers side. I open my hood like that all the time because I dont have a grill. -
I have modified the turbo to bolt up to the factory cross pipe. Two of the holes already matched and there was room to drill the third hole to match. I will probably keep the same exhaust setup that I had before but with the new flange. Just a pipe coming off the turbo pointed at the ground. I dont plan on increasing boost until I get an intercooler. Ive already killed one engine with too much boost. One of the vacuum solenoids is in the way. Im going to use longer vacuum line and put it somewhere else. I like the idea of a custom up pipe. Ill figure something out for the intake. Right now I have the engine out to change a head gasket. Its probably going to be a week or so before Im finished.
