Mechanic in South Vancouver Island
Vanislru replied to jazzician's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm not in the area but if your up in my neck of the woods give me a call and we'll see what we can do to your car. A cv should run you about 150-200 bucks installed. -

Vac guage is only a loaner, no luck with the oil pressure might post on it later. -

I don't think it's your turbo, the first thing I'd check is for any vac leaks. Then I'd run some really strong fuel injector cleaner through it. Pull the disty and spray the bejesus out of it internally with brake cleaner and then lube it with oil, check to make sure the actuator from the Vac unit on the disty works. How's the fuel filter, when fuel pumps are on there way out they have a very distinct cycling to them, mid throttle the car bucks a bit and hard throttle surges slightly. -
No kiddin!!! Up here in commie land we have the actual tire cost, then enviro levies, GST/PST which is a 14.5% tax, plus disposal charges, makes a $1000 dollars in tires $1400. Taxes on taxes yeah socialism. For the SS's I ordered it took 10 weeks for them to get trucked up from the states!

I looked too but had no luck, what size of lift would be needed to run those, 6"? I've got a bit of tire rub on my flares with my setup, I could remedy it but I'll wait till I tear a flare off or somethin'.

I had SS's on my Ford powerstroke f-350, great all round offroad tire fur sure but in IMO crap on the road, too loud and the tire compound is too hard for snow and ice. I like to stay awake on long commute and SS's are to loud and hypnotic for me. Screw SS's is my personal bias, that is what he asked for personal opinions. Trxus's come in 29'sx10.5 [which I run] and interco said they might have a 27x9.5 next year. They are the best offroad/onroad tire I've run, period. Mud, Snow, Rocks, and Sand. I've not had them in wet clay yet, but everything else and they are stellar especially on ice and snow. I'm planning on a write up for Zapar's tire sticky but I feel that I'd better have more time on these tires otherwise someone might question my experience.

I love my tires, the only time they're loud is if I'm moving slow and I get on the brakes hard. My mpg on the highway is waaaayyy better, in town not as good. Cornering is excellent I've only slid the rear out on ashphalt once and that was a wet highspeed off camber corner. Screw SS tsl's or whatever, checkout interco's TrXus tires. I'll try to post pics latr, there's some in the rim probs thread 1st page.

Performance parts for older Subes?
Vanislru replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Air in and air out, any time you improve the ability to move air the faster your car will be. IMO the last thing you should spend bucks on is the spark, if you really want more power you will be disappointed after spending the big bucks you'll still have a na car. Buy a turbo. As said above exhaust, throttle body, intake[maybe spider], port the heads behind the valve's, NOS[?$$$?] All this and you will still be slower than a stock turbo car. Unless you want to start approaching the limits of reliability. -
Welcome to the board guy there's quite a few canucks on the board, all tho most are lurkers. Whistler, do they have snow? I've been looking at a road trip to Powderking this Feb, in the desperate search for snow the mountains here on the island are screwed. my discs on both of my 86's feel firm with only about an inch or so before the brakes do there thing when I'm on the pedal, the only time they haven't is when I didn't bleed them properly. The high temp of your car is bad juju, check the things you mentioned, maybe buy some rad fluid tester strips, they can tell you if there is exhaust in your coolant and if you have a bad HG. Is there any white chuffs of smoke out of your exhaust? When it's running does the upper rad hose get really hot after driving, if it does then your pumps fine. What kind of shape are things in? Is it turbo, more info please.

Vanislru replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Corey maybe we should start a thread so us islanders can set up a larger meet in the future, probly belongs in meet and greet but there's not all that much exposure there. -
Rally Car Pics....as promised...
Vanislru replied to Do It Sidewayz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The last action shot looks sick! I love sedans, they look good even better than the wagon's IMO. DIS do you have any rally events not in Onterriable? -

Yeah, when I had the TWE pipes w/ 2.5" straight out the back i got complaints from the nieghbors, one guy even threatened to phone the landlord, he looked really distressed when I told him that I owned the place:lol:. It's quieter now the stink eyes where killing me. -
Vancouver Island Suby Mini-Meet
Vanislru replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This link will take you to the vids in my user gallery, i haven't figured out how to link them individually yet but as soon as i do they'll be up. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?pho Some photos of the meet are in there too. Bushbasher is a fitting user name, when we took off up the road Corey drove up and into the brush, over a rock pile and then up a rock face covered in salal. I'm envious, having that sort of terrain and a 4x4 rig u can thrash around in any time can't be beat. Something big breaks and it's almost dark, no problem walk down the hill and you're home, very nice. -
Can't argue with that, Sucker King your avatar rules!

I have 240,000mi/388,000km on my wagon in the sig., it has the orig. motor with a bottom end rebuild about 50,000 mi ago. It gets abused every weekend and driven hard everyday, very reliable.

I felt lucky to be able to get the series, the vids were well worth the money and have inspired myself and many of my friends. Good to here you will still be doing them, I personally would have no prob's with a price increase cause there's no doubting how much work went into the editing, copying and distribution of them. Not to mention taking all the vids first of all.

Cherry bombs also fit best up under the old exhaust housing and the sound with the boxer is so burly. Good choice IMO. -

Just got home, going to work on posting the video tonite. They don't really do justice to how steep your property is, I'd love to have that sort of terrain right out my door. My ears are still ringing from those straight pipes on your wagon, I never really thought a subie i'd be that loud. -
Sweet a JY run I'm there dude, I'll PM.

Update? I'm coming down Sat. maybe I can stare it down for ya. Stupid bolt. Truly maddening, now all you need is for the GF to give you grief for wasteing so much time on that old car:lol:.

Upsizing the oil filter possible?
Vanislru replied to freedster's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I use mobil 1 full synth 15/50 and my oil pressure at idle never drops below 4 [whatever units] and usually cruises 3000rpm just below 6[whatevers]. Did the oil pump mickey mouse seal and the large o ring about a year ago. I personally think magnets are best on the sump pan.
