Since my GL is lifted a stock spare tire jack doesn't work. So I was bored and I fixed it!

EA81 mated to EA82 d/r yet again...
987687 replied to adema2626's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My car has an ea81 and ea82 d/r swapped by a previous owner. So I'm not sure what clutch kit was used, but I do know that it's an ea82 flywheel because the timing marks are wrong and I had to make my own. -
Waterwagon 3 Build-up, and the SJR+EJ Lift Thread!

Your car is awesome!! -
Yes indeed. The easiest way to tell the difference between IDE and floppy is this. The index pin (the filled in hole so you plug it in the right way) on IDE is right near the middle. One floppy cables it is about 4 from one end. Otherwise if you don't have one of each to compare it can be a little hard to tell the difference without counting.

It could be exhaust rattle. My legacy was doing this, it would make a horrible rattle only when the engine was under load at about 1000 RPMs, and generally that's only when taking off from a stop. If I was idling along in first and stepped on the gas it would do the same rattle until just above 1000 RPMs and then stop. Which is what tipped me off it probably wasn't the TOB. Which is what I feared. It's worth checking it out.

Awesome! It's cool the car is coming together for you, and GD is the man! It's awesome he's helping you out with all that.

Thanks for the answers. I ended up with a phase2 harness for my ej22, and can only get a DOHC harness for free, so I'm going to pull that then! I'm not certain on the year of any of it, just that it's a solid lifter phase 1 ej22, ad the harness I got with it is definitely a phase2... Hopefully I can get it up and running.

So, I don't believe my harness matches my engine... I'm fairly certain the engine is out of a 97 impreza, and the ECU has markings (from someone) that I believe imply it's a 98. I figured since the switch to phase 2 wasn't until 99 sometime it wouldn't be an issue. But ... I dunno now. I need to figure out if the ECU will run that engine, then maybe I could go to a junk yard and get the correct connectors from some car so I can plug together. or something... I'm a bit upset it doesn't fit together. It's just going to make it more work.

On the SPFI the ignition timing is supposed to be 20 DBTDC

There's an ej22 sitting on my garage floor Pics tomorrow after work!!

I figured there was a product for doing flares like that... I'd seen some pictures and it all looked like garden edger I can buy at the hardware store for about $8 to cover all 4 wheels... They still don't like trees.

Looks like garden edger plastic? I used it to make flares on mine ... They've since fallen off though, they didn't like trees....

Mine never reads half either, I think a lot of them do that. I too replaced the thermostat to no avail, so I went to my haynes. It gives the resistance that the sensor for the computer should be at when the engine is at temperature, so I warmed it up to as high as the gauge goes and hooked up my meter. It was spot on to what the manual says. It could also be the sensor, gauge, or the wiring is getting old and has some resistance between the sensor and the gauge causing a low reading. For the note, the sensor that goes to the computer is at the bottom of the thermostat housing and has 2 wires, the one for the gauge is is on the manifold maybe 2" back with only one wire off it. Best bet is to warm it up and check the resistance on the sensor for the computer. If you don't have a manual I can look the resistance up in mine for you, or it's probably on here somewhere.

It's going into my 89 GL. Probably after winter because I'll need it for winter. It has an ea81 in it now, so I'm not worried about engine failure or anything like that., just want more power. I'm going to be picking up the engine tomorrow. Free unless it works... Interesting deal he doesn't know how it runs. So I'm going to make a run-in stand so I can test it out. I'll probably start work on that once I get the harness stripped down. I still need to find a wiring manual for the 97 impreza, but life has been incredibly crazy right now and I haven't searched to hard. At least all the parts for the swap are coming together, harness and tomorrow the engine is the majority of it. Then it's just to figure out the flywheel/clutch setup and adapter plate. I've been reading up on a bunch of swap threads. There's always that stupid thing you didn't think you need and it takes you by surprise, but I'm hoping by reading other's experience with the swap I can get past most of the road blocks. I'm probably going to use a after market header, or stock on or something and build the rest of the exhaust myself.
