What Have You Done to your Soobie lately? (Please post in here and keep it going)
How are you going to swap the new front diff in? I thought you couldn't take the pinion gear off and swap it out with a different one, which is the reason when you make a 4.11 d/r you need to have the viscus center... That's really cool!! Someone should get that.

Yes indeed. The easiest way to tell the difference between IDE and floppy is this. The index pin (the filled in hole so you plug it in the right way) on IDE is right near the middle. One floppy cables it is about 4 from one end. Otherwise if you don't have one of each to compare it can be a little hard to tell the difference without counting.

IDE is 40 pin. Some is 80 pin, but that just has extra grounds for less interference.

86 pin SCSI cables have more pins, and are generally longer than IDE cables Of course you can use an 80 pin dual channel IDE cable, but you don't get as long lengths as the 40 pin ones...

clutch grinding sound?
It could be exhaust rattle. My legacy was doing this, it would make a horrible rattle only when the engine was under load at about 1000 RPMs, and generally that's only when taking off from a stop. If I was idling along in first and stepped on the gas it would do the same rattle until just above 1000 RPMs and then stop. Which is what tipped me off it probably wasn't the TOB. Which is what I feared. It's worth checking it out.

This is awesome! I can't wait to see the finished product! The first 20 solder points will be a pain, but you'll get in the grove of it, and the rest won't be so bad. I do quite a bit of really minuscule soldering and it isn't to bad once you get the technique down.

SOHC engine on DOHC harness
987687 replied to 987687's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIndependent ECU? I don't care to much if I have a resident CEL, I'll probably have one anyway. It's all going in a Loyale, I just posted it here because I knew I'd get more traffic and quicker answers than in the retrofitting section ...

SOHC engine on DOHC harness
987687 replied to 987687's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThanks for the answers. I ended up with a phase2 harness for my ej22, and can only get a DOHC harness for free, so I'm going to pull that then! I'm not certain on the year of any of it, just that it's a solid lifter phase 1 ej22, ad the harness I got with it is definitely a phase2... Hopefully I can get it up and running.

2.2 hydraulic vs soild lifters
987687 replied to logic23's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSo the 97 and 98 phase 1 ej22s were solid?

SOHC engine on DOHC harness
People do the swaps from DOHC ej25s to ej22s all the time. So with that in mind, am I correct in thinking that I can run a phase 1 ej22 with an ej25 DOHC harness? Anything I need to swap, or does it just connect right up and work?

My ej22 swap therad.
So, I don't believe my harness matches my engine... I'm fairly certain the engine is out of a 97 impreza, and the ECU has markings (from someone) that I believe imply it's a 98. I figured since the switch to phase 2 wasn't until 99 sometime it wouldn't be an issue. But ... I dunno now. I need to figure out if the ECU will run that engine, then maybe I could go to a junk yard and get the correct connectors from some car so I can plug together. or something... I'm a bit upset it doesn't fit together. It's just going to make it more work.

Sluggish??
On the SPFI the ignition timing is supposed to be 20 DBTDC

Lift Kits?
I figured there was a product for doing flares like that... I'd seen some pictures and it all looked like garden edger I can buy at the hardware store for about $8 to cover all 4 wheels... They still don't like trees.

Lift Kits?
Looks like garden edger plastic? I used it to make flares on mine ... They've since fallen off though, they didn't like trees....

Never gets to Temperature
Mine never reads half either, I think a lot of them do that. I too replaced the thermostat to no avail, so I went to my haynes. It gives the resistance that the sensor for the computer should be at when the engine is at temperature, so I warmed it up to as high as the gauge goes and hooked up my meter. It was spot on to what the manual says. It could also be the sensor, gauge, or the wiring is getting old and has some resistance between the sensor and the gauge causing a low reading. For the note, the sensor that goes to the computer is at the bottom of the thermostat housing and has 2 wires, the one for the gauge is is on the manifold maybe 2" back with only one wire off it. Best bet is to warm it up and check the resistance on the sensor for the computer. If you don't have a manual I can look the resistance up in mine for you, or it's probably on here somewhere.

My ej22 swap therad.
It's going into my 89 GL. Probably after winter because I'll need it for winter. It has an ea81 in it now, so I'm not worried about engine failure or anything like that., just want more power. I'm going to be picking up the engine tomorrow. Free unless it works... Interesting deal he doesn't know how it runs. So I'm going to make a run-in stand so I can test it out. I'll probably start work on that once I get the harness stripped down. I still need to find a wiring manual for the 97 impreza, but life has been incredibly crazy right now and I haven't searched to hard. At least all the parts for the swap are coming together, harness and tomorrow the engine is the majority of it. Then it's just to figure out the flywheel/clutch setup and adapter plate. I've been reading up on a bunch of swap threads. There's always that stupid thing you didn't think you need and it takes you by surprise, but I'm hoping by reading other's experience with the swap I can get past most of the road blocks. I'm probably going to use a after market header, or stock on or something and build the rest of the exhaust myself.

EJ22- interface or non interface?
987687 replied to Arty's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'm pretty sure the legacy changed to the phase 2 in 97, and the impreza lagged. The other difference with the phase 2 is heads. Plugs go through the valve covers much like on an ej25, and they have a MAP sensor instead of a MAF.

axle spins but tire doesnt :(
That trick doesn't work so well when it's a FWD car...

EJ22- interface or non interface?
987687 replied to Arty's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOn the legacy, 90 to 96 is non-interference. 97 and up legacys use the interference motor. The impreza didn't go to the interference motor until around 1999. all 97 and most 98's are non-interference, not overly sure about 99. It was transitional.
