  1. After searching through the books this is what came up, The only late 80's subaru that has an axle boot listed under a different part number is a 2wd rx and a dl 4wd justy (that is according to the part books they have in the store). Otherwise all the other 80's subarus use part number 85-0911 for the outer joint and 85-0999 for the inner (according to the books) All i need is an axle boot that is a little over 3 1/2 inches in diameter to fit the larger EA82 joints. So im waiting for those boots under different part numbers to get in stock so i can measure them. Maybe one day i will get this figured out -Andy
  2. Glad it has been helpful, its been very helpful for me also. I have been doing some thinking. If yall are right about the 2wd being larger than the 4wd (im confident you are) then that is what is causing my axle boot frustrations. I did some comparrison shots between the smaller EA82 4WD Axle joints and the EA81 Axle joints They do look different in size and they are (EA82 on left, EA81 on right) The diameters are not much different though. Same goes for the DOJ cups (81 on left, 82 on right) What this means to me is i made a mistake. The first time i redid a few axles for Bill i must have picked up a FWD EA82 axle. The boots i ordered of course would not fit because these axles are much larger than both EA81 and EA82 4WD axles. The way i will check this is to get my carquest parts slave (aka my mom) to look up EA82 FWD axles boots and see if the part numbers are different. Then all i have to do is order the right stuff and problem solved -Andy
  3. I know there were more videos taken besides mine, so lets see them! i need proof my Brat made it through that hole because i still dont believe it
  4. This has been frustrating for me :-\ I get most of my auto part needs from carquest because i can get it at cost (im special ) But when i ordered boots from carquest the first time i did a few axles i had problems. The boots fit EA81 axles just fine like they should. On EA82 the boots of course did not fit fine. The outer cv boots were stretchy enough to get on, but the inner boots could not physically fit on the larger DOJ cups. So i go into carquest and get on their computer to do some searching through their providers. They only carry those two boots. I could not even find a third part number anywhere for any EA axle. So my approach has been to use the stretchier outer boots on both outer and inner joints when it comes to the EA82 axles. Seems to work so far. Ive been doing some searching through the net to try and find boots that are sized for EA82 inner joints with mostly no luck. Does anyone know if the DOJ cups on EJ axles are larger than EA81? If they are i might try ordering those to use on EA82 and see if they fit. -Andy
  5. That makes sense As far as i know there are no EA82T's in there. I got these axles from Bill, they were all in a pile and i said i would reboot them for him. -Andy
  6. Comparison pictures: These are all EA82 Axle components Above is a shot of all the axle shafts (one with the cv joint still attached (sucker didnt want to come off)). They are all the same length, but the two on each far side are larger in diameter than the three in the middle. A little hard to see but the two on the outside are both the same larger diameter and the three in the middle are all the same smaller diameter (used a micrometer to make sure). The two on the right are larger CV joints and even slightly longer overall length than the three to the left. Yet the splines and threaded area are the same diameter. Another shot to show the size difference. This is the odd axle out on the left. It is the same size as the smaller ones but the CV joint shape is slightly different. The top three DOJ cups are smaller diameter than the bottom two. There is also a slight height difference. Overall theses axles will fit the same way in any EA82 vehicle. But two of them are noticeably beefier (inside and out) than the other three. I would like to think that they are factory and the smaller three are aftermarket. But i have no way of knowing for sure since i don't know where they originally came from. -Andy
  7. A couple things that i have figured out- If you dismantle the axle completely keep the ball bearings separated. They are different sizes for inner and outer joints. And another thing that stumps me a bit is all the EA82 axles are not the same. I do not know where they each came from originally, but there are differences with the internal components on a few of them (mostly just size difference). This might be an factory vs after market difference but i dont know which is which. Photos coming soon -Andy
  8. I have acquired several axles Top are EA81 fronts with one rear (there is also an EA71 rear in the mix:rolleyes: ), bottom are EA82 fronts. I intend to reuse them. So i am in the process of cleaning all of them like so I will post up pictures showing size differences between inner/outer joint internals and EA81/EA82 parts. If i had an EA82 rear i would have all the possibilities and could see what parts can be interchanged. This is what happens when i have too much time on my hands If anyone has any questions about specifics (sizes, lengths whatever) just let me know and i will see what i can find -Andy
  9. Now thats more like it -Andy
  10. Thanks again everybody for coming out, it was a blast here is a couple shots The rest are here along with a couple videos http://picasaweb.google.com/fenix747/WCSS1202?feat=directlink Next time yall have a run up at walker or down in oregon ill be sure to try and make it -Andy
  11. Good new, the Brat is back together and good to go Im assuming most of you will be over in Cashmere setting up camp and what not. So to make things easier for everyone i will meet you all at the WCSS location so we can leave for the trails as a group. I will show up around noon. Here is my cell if anything comes up (253) 381 6539 See yall tomorrow -Andy
  12. If my Brat is even going to make it to the show there is a chance i wont be able to make it Friday, lots of work to be done and not much time. It should be ready at least by saturday, so i can wheel in the morning if people are up for it. If anything i will come to the show with the impreza again and maybe catch a ride with one of you other wheelers, either way i will be at the show. Lets just hope everything works out and i can wheel friday. -Andy
  13. Ive been removing my transmission a lot lately to take care of clutch issues, so i made a video of the process. I hope this video can help show some people how to swap a clutch and show that it aint all that bad Should be basically the same process for ea82's through ej's, with maybe a few more things to unbolt. Also if you need to take the transmission completely off the only thing extra to do is undo a few more cables and remove the front axles. Good luck -Andy
  14. I went through this exact same scenario, new clutch in Feb without resurfacing, started slipping in April. Last week i pulled the trans and resurfaced the flywheel, used the old (almost new) clutch disk and it was worse. Replaced the old clutch disk with a new one and it works fine now. My buddy did some research and he found .906 as a number. Measured the step and it was .900 on my ea81 flywheel. If this clutch doesnt last long like the previous then im going to assume i have a bad pressure plate. We shall see. -Andy
  15. Cool, i would think Friday would give us time to do any trail we want and as many as we want. If we do saturday morning trail 319 might take too long, but we could run a couple of the shorter trails. -Andy
  16. Hey all, Lets get a group together and hit some trails eh? The location will be in the Liberty area about 40 minutes from Cashmere by highway. Here is a good list of the trails http://nwjeepn.com/WAtrails.htm#liberty Good variety of difficulty, so there is fun for everyone I personally have ran the crystal ridge trail 319 and it is a good one. I have heard great things about other trails in the area too, so whatever we run should be a good time. 319 is long, takes up a good part of the day but provides a good challenge. Other trails are shorter and can be linked together to get a little of everything. So throw out some trail suggestion, i have a GPS with all of them loaded so we can choose on the go if anything. Also throw out some dates that work for you, i am ready to wheel any day through sunday after the show. I want to try to give everyone who wants to wheel with a group of subies a chance to do so, if that means wheeling more than one day im all for it (makes it easy being somewhat local ) So who's in? -Andy
  17. Sure thing, ill start another thread in the offroad section to organizing some wheelin -Andy
  18. Its a 40 minute drive from Cashmere to Liberty Road which is the main access. Although you can access the trails from service roads at the top of blewett pass. To the best of my knowledge this is the closest wheeling to the show. There might be some "local spots" but ive never heard of anything. I think its worth the drive, but i live here If anything its downhill to Ellensburg and i bet there is enough parts between some of us locals to fix up a broken rig. -Andy
  19. The closest easy to challenging offroading can be found here http://nwjeepn.com/WAtrails.htm#liberty Good trails, and you can fallow the service roads back to Cashmere eventually or take the highway. -Andy
  20. Well its been a long week but i finally got things running right. I wanted to figure out what was going on with the clutch issue, after some research i figured it might be because i didnt resurface my flywheel last time i swap out the clutch. So i took out the flywheel and had it resurfaced, installed everything and then nothing. The Brat wouldnt move at all now, i could release the clutch in any gear from stand still and it would just keep idling. So i figure maybe it wasnt resurfaced right or something else went wrong. Took the trans off again measure things out and it was correct. So i put it all back together and still nothing. Took it apart again to check the clutch disk and if it was damaged at all. It was bent very slightly. So i picked up a new clutch, installed it, and presto works like it should. Almost works too well. So after taking the trans off and on so many times i figured im pretty good at that now. Made a little video for fun and to help others out with transmission removal. Ready for some wheelin at WCSS agian -Andy
  21. pulling the tank isnt too bad. Just unbolt the mustache bar and let the diff sag a bit, that gives enough room to get the tank out. Try blowing through the lines to see if there is a clog anywhere. There was a clog in a line inside my tank, used compressed air to blow it out and solved my problems. -Andy
  22. My Brat had been sitting for a few years when i picked it up. It hesitated bucked and bogged just as yours is. Turns out there was a clog in the fuel line. That would help explain why you have to pump the gas a few times, and it hesitates and bucks because its starving from fuel for a moment. What i would try is to pull the fuel line at a couple different spots (like in the engine bay and also by the fuel pump) and blow through it. You should be able to blow easily and if you blow towards the tank you should hear bubbles, if its hard you probably have a clog. (Be aware gas might come back at you after blowing) I had a clog in one of the lines inside my tank, to clear it out i took some compressed air and shot it through. Been running fine ever since Hope this helps -Andy
  23. Fire is contained Still smokey as hell out here though, probably from fires further north. Hopefully i get the rest of my Brat back together, should by tomorrow. So is there any interest out there? Gonna be fun -Andy
  24. For those who are interested, the wheeling trip is up in the air now due to fire hazards. There is a wildfire near Cashmere, it isnt in the area where the 4x4 trails are but it could be. I still plan to go wheeling but only if its safe. http://www.nwccweb.us/index.asp Good place to keep your eyes on, this could potentially effect WCSS too if it gets out of hand. -Andy **EDIT** I found a more informative link http://inciweb.org/incident/2052 Seems the fires are located north of highway 2.
