Rust-Free PNW cars- The End is Nigh!
eulogious replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok, so I have access to the people who actually make these decisions for WSDOT, and I will try to find out why they have started salting the roads. There has to be a reason. I will say this, WSDOT is actually very good, and this really surprises me that they would change the policy, especially since it's bad for the cars! I have a feeling it has to do with budget cuts. Every department is hurting, so it's probably cheaper to get "salt" than to use "non salt" for the roads. I will ask some questions and try to find out what the thinking was behind the switch. I agree that this is totally lame. I will also voice all our concerns to the highest up person I can. Probably won't do any good, but at least I can try! I can't sit around and do nothing! -
If you want a manual for it, I just saw the FSM (Factory Service Manual) in the Classified section on the forums here. I just picked mine up for 24 bucks, and it covers a lot of stuff, well everything about the car actually. Also there are some links online for the FSM as well... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showpost.php?p=863446&postcount=6 There's my post with the links for the FSM and some other helpful manuals. I hope that this at least points you in the right direction, good luck!

AAV (Auxiliary Air Valve) issues when cold?
eulogious replied to eulogious's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's good. Is the AAV like the IAC? Can I clean it to see if that helps, and if I can clean it, is it the same procedure as cleaning the IAC? What should I look out for to see if it's on its way out the door? I have only had the car for a few months, so when something new comes around I haven't seen before, I like to try to find out if it a problem or a "normal" thing, at least "normal" for a car with 200,000 miles on it What about the high idle adjustment? I am just curious if the bolt is standard procedure. When it warms up a little outside, I might go out and see what happens when the bolt is removed and see what going on. Thanks all! -
So the other day I started my car to let it warm up with my remote start. I went about my usual routine for about 10 more min, and then went down to my car to discover it off. I thought that this was weird, so I started it back up to see what would happen. It started fine, but then the idle climbed to about 2200 and stayed there. So I tapped the gas to see if it would drop the RPM's. This is where it gets a little weird. When I tapped the gas, the idle would drop down to about 1100 RPM's and then immediately climb back up to 2200 RPM's. It did this consistently for about 5 min while I waited to see what would happen. After 5 min passed and nothing changed, I drove to work because I was going to be late. On the way to work, the car acted fine, and when I got to work, it was idling just fine. It was not done this since, that was two days ago. It was also super cold, around 10 degrees when I tried to start the car. I have started it since then in the same weather on a different morning, and I didn't have a problem. I have also started my car several other times after having it sit for a few hours in the cold, and have not had a problem. It seems that this was a one time thing. So my question are these, would the AAV cause this symptom? Where can I find an AAV if it is the problem, rockauto doesn't list them? Should I even be worried about it? The car is a 1990 loyale turbo wagon. My FSM doesn't really say too much about the AAV, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Another question along the same lines... Where is the Fast Idle adjust screw? According to the FSM it should be right under the Fast Idle Solenoid, but when I go out and look at my car, I find the Fast Idle Solenoid, but where I think the fast idle adjust screw should be, there is a bolt there. Yes a bolt with no slot for a screw driver. It's a normal bolt sticking out... So should I remove the bolt and see what's behind it, or just leave it be? I want to adjust the the fast idle speed because it seems really high, when the AC kicks in, the idle jumps to about 1200 RPM's. My FSM says that the idle should be about 850 or so, where the normal idle should be around 800, and my idle is about 800, so according to the FSM, it's high, so I would like to adjust it down to the specs, so any help with this would also be much appreciated.

Tire Size dicontinued? What to use instead?
eulogious replied to Deener's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's good to hear there are some decent people out there that won't break the law for cheaper tires! Props, you are a stronger man than me in that regard. I have smuggled a fair amount of goods to and from Canada, so it's just becomes second nature... Should I be saying this???? *Looks over shoulder, looking for the man* -
I believe they just come off pretty easy. But I am not sure, I have not done that myself. It just seems like they are slightly clogged. Right now it's about 10 outside, and my squiters work just fine, so I don't think the pump is the problem. I would check the squiters for clogs, and check the tubing for the system to make sure there isn't a blockage or something. That's all I got...

Sounds like a plan. The more the merrier!

Looks awesome man! Good start for you anyways! I am pretty busy until x-mas now with family stuff on the weekends unfortunately, but around new years I will be wanting to get out! So I will post back in a few...

I guess I should clarify what I said earlier. The 4EAT is a Full Time 4WD transmission. For this topic, it's the closest thing to "AWD", that's why I brought it up. My bigger point is that there is a difference between the manual and the automatics transmissions. That's all. Let's not start a "AWD" flame war. If anyone wants more info the differences between FT 4WD and AWD, just search for it. It's been covered recently. I just want to throw that in... continue on

Tire Size dicontinued? What to use instead?
eulogious replied to Deener's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Or you just say you have been there for two days (48 hours to be exact). Even easier, DON'T MENTION/DECLARE YOU BOUGHT TIRES. They won't know or care. Of course this is illegal, but so is speeding, and I do that every day I will only stop and pay taxes at the border one time (didn't know about the 48 hour rule), I learned my lesson, and they will never know what I have purchased now, that and I ALWAYS spend 49 hours or more in Canada, according to them anyways Off topic, but I got a Canada stamp on my passport It took asking three different times before they would do it, but I got one I just thought that was cool... -
Just to nit pick/clarify, I have a 1990 Loyale that IS AWD, but I have the automatic 4EAT transmission, so it's a "true" AWD system. So I think you mean to say that all MANUAL Loyales are 4WD. There is some variation with the automatics for the Loyales I believe (3AT? and 4EAT available?), but that's off topic... I think that the reason so many people think that the Loyales had AWD and center locking diffs is because the RX and turbo models had them in the older years, and they don't realize that subaru basically discontinue those trannys for the loyales and replaced them with different offerings. My 2 cents.

82 subaru gl ideas?????
eulogious replied to creswellhick's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wow, that's fantastic! What to do with it? Maybe a new target on the target range? Or maybe set it on fire and practice putting out subie fires with a garden hose? Setup some ramps on the end of a dock and jump it into a lake while it's on fire and you are running around on the shore in your underwear screaming "WHY OH WHY" while your friends video tape it to post on YouTube? I jest of course I honestly don't know what you could do with it. It looks like it has some great mods done to it already, maybe just improve on those Good times -

Tire Size dicontinued? What to use instead?
eulogious replied to Deener's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That tire size should not be discontinued. The only size tire I had trouble finding was 185/80/13 not 185/70/13. When I was looking for 185/80/13 I found a BOAT load of 185/70/13's, but only Les Schwab had the 185/80/13's. Of course all my experience is in the states, so I don't know about Canada. If you can't find a Canadian company to find tires, just go to a Les Schwab across the border... This will only work if you are close to the border of course. I think your tire store is just lazy and doesn't want to do any research for you. I would take my business else where. But that's just me... You would think that a store called CANADIAN TIRE would be able to get all types of tires, but alas, I have never had good luck with Canadian Tire. The store name seems misleading to me. BTW I lived up in Langley for about 6 months, so I had to deal with them. Here's a link to the thread that I started about getting my new tires 185/80/13's... There's some useful info it for ya: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=104450 Hope this helps! -
Annual Hatch Patrol Xmas Tree run

It looks like I will not be able to make it as well. The father-in-law fell off a ladder and messed himself up prettey bad, so it looks like this weekend is going to be spent at the in-laws. Good times... not so much :| You all have fun in the snow, and take some good pics! -
I would go to a JY and grab a new wiper/headlight switch and just plug it in and see if it works. If it works, that's your problem, if it doesn't, then it's something with the wiper motor probably or the wiring. My local Pull a Part lets me test parts before I buy them, so I can test to see what's wrong. Maybe one in your area allows you to do the same. Just a thought.

Thanks for the tip... I was going to do that, but I wanted to be different. I have installed after market power door locks all around on my old wagon, but I really wasn't pleased with the results. I had the five wire actuator on my old one. When I set out to do this mod, I thought about doing it that way, but like I said, I wasn't too pleased with the results the last time I did it, so I wanted a new and different way to accomplish the same thing. It was ALOT of work to fit everything into the doors and it made the bulged out on my old car... The main reason I did this was for the 2 stage unlock. Press once, drivers side unlocks, press again, the rest unlock. That was the original goal, which is fairly easy to accomplish with a few relays. I also wanted to add a switch in the cab for the driver. I realize that this was totally the hard way to go, but it's totally worth it. I have more control over the power door locks then before. The actuator that I installed in the drivers door is actually the front passenger actuator from the JY. Cost me $6.99, and I found new relays w/pigtail for $3 a piece, including tax Gotta love your local electronics wholesaler. (On a side note, if you are in the Olympia area and need electronics (reistors, capicitors, switches, relay, etc.), check out ERI http://www.eresourcing.com/ they have EVERYTHING you could ever possibly want for electronics for cheap, and in stock!) I had to jerry-rig the lock bars, but it fits all up in there stock like. Doesn't make anything bulge out, and doesn't bind up on anything. Right now, everything is setup so all I have to do is wire in the keyless entry. I am really happy with the results that I got. I will be posting a complete guide to installing the keyless entry and remote start, including the FSM scans and wiring diagrams that I made for all this, but I need time to install it all, and then document it. But I will be posting a very through how to on this It's was alot of work firguring it out, but now that's it's done, it's really quite simple and works very well. Like I said, I accomplished exactly what I wanted to do. Sometimes I just like to be different

Ok, so I got the drivers side door motor in, and my locks working! The one thing that I realized in doing the locks this way is that I can no longer lock or unlock all my car doors from the inside the car or when it's running! It won't be a problem outside with the keyless entry, but I can't unlock/lock all the doors easily from the inside. So to remedy this, I installed a couple more relays and wired them up to some push button switches and I now have lock/unlock buttons in my car! I will have pics and diagrams for my wiring to get this to work. Now my keyless entry system will lock/unlock my doors, and I can lock/unlock all my doors from inside my car. It's good stuff. More to come...

Is EA82 Turbo boost adjustable?

Is EA82 Turbo boost adjustable?
eulogious replied to quartus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you are not getting 7 psi, you probably have an exhaust/vacuum leak some where in the system, and that's why you can't hit 7 psi. That or something is up with the waste-gate setup... I am not exactly sure what, but those would be where I would start. In my 1990 Loyale ea82T with 198,000 miles on it, I hit 7.5 psi WOT, no mods done, bone stock. As for the boost controller, you can get a manual one and use that to adjust the boost and plumb it in. Just google for it. I believe any manual boost controller will work, but I wouldn't mess with the stock system too much. The ea82T is a picky son-of-a-bi@#h, so I would leave it stock. I personally want it to last as long as it can, and when it goes, its EJ swap time I will never up the boost, it just equals trouble. That just my 2 cents. -

I take it not so good times happened at some point. That's good to know. I guess it's time to start PMing! Thanks for the tip -
I have heard this as well, but nobody has been able to confirm that this works, especially on a 1990 4EAT out of a loyale. The legacy and the loyale 4EAT transmissions use different TCU's, even when the cars are the same year, the legacy has a different TCU than the loyale or ae82 series for that matter. The legacy TCU has a better cpu in it and some other things that mine does not. I think that contributes to the confusion on what works and what doesn't. You would think that subaru would have just made one TCU for the cars and put the same one in all, but they didn't. I could be wrong when I say that the 1st gear trick doesn't work because I haven't done WOT on it to find out, but like I said, the TCU's are different so that might mean something... Either way, that's why I did the switch. That's what I did to find the wire, I just grabbed my DMM and started testing wires as described in the rs25 forum until I found the correct one. Just make sure you have the TCU, not the ECU I was testing the ECU at first, because the loyale puts the TCU in a different place than the legacy's. Oops, oh well... Feel free to ask me any questions, and I will help were I can, but since I don't have a legacy, I don't know how much help I will be, but I will help as much as I can! Good luck!

I think that I am in for the x-mas tree run. I have to check my calendar, but I think I am available, and it sounds like it will be good times! Thanks for the heads up on the links, I was curious on where it was

I think that I am in, at least right now. It's on a Sunday, so I should be available... We should definitely caravan it over there! I am rockin' a stock subie with snow tires, I should be ok for this, correct? Sounds like a real good time...
