Do you know what "lowest common denominator" means? That's what happens when the internet is catered to folks with dialup. That'd be like using VHS to release a Subaru movie. Don't be knockin' his pics either. There's some purdy shots there, and quite frankly I haven't seen your EJ do any better.

Typically one side will require you to detach the strut or some such nonesense to get the axle out. Consequently, the other side will come out very easy. Remove the easy side! I usually just drive onto a rock to lift a tire. Use cotter pins instead of spring pins and keep the spindles clean, the job takes like 3 minutes. BTW, I just took my locker OUT, it wasn't worth giving up on-the-fly-4x and didn't work very well in a dry environment. If there was mud here I might think differently. I can always put it back in for special occasions!

I'm down with that, it's the cost of gas that scares me. -

I'd need to see the skid plate, but I'm very interested. -
This pic rules! The Roc don't need no stinkin' lift! Hey, John and I are talking about Mobe sometime before Thanksgiving. What sayeth thee?

I've got a Ozified 3/3, and it's pretty ghetto. I was unfortunate enough to get one of the first aluminum kits, which consisted of aluminum bar stock run through a chop saw. All the bolt hole were haphazardly drilled and frequntly off center. None of the blocks were finished in any way; ie rough edges/sides. Almost all of the blocks had to be ground down or reamed out to fit the car. Then there's other factors like the sheer imposibility of reaching PK, or the lousy intructions. It also took nearly 3 months for me to get my kit, and I have not yet recieved my steering shaft deposit. Now, all that said my lift does what it's supposed to. It's great that PK was making lifts in the US when no else was. But times change, so buy a AA kit.

If you're climbing anything that requires a locker, most of the weight of the car will be shifted to the back wheels. A front locker / rear open would be rather pointless IMO.

I've been trying to get down there to do Imogene all summer. I haven't done Black Bear, but a quick google turned up a good description. http://members.tripod.com/HoboJeepers/SJ7-3-00.htm I've done the Ouray side of Imogene, in an unlifted wagon. That's prolly not indicitive of the rest of route, though. Some pretty intense country down there...

No, but it's fun to pretend! Dave wasn't actually stuck; he knocked some wiring loose and we just moved it to a dry spot to fix.

There's no need to test drive a old gen Subaru. They all have the same things wrong wrong with them. Just get the one with the least rust.

John [the sucker king] pulled my disabled wagon out 13 miles of dirt with multiple stream crossings. We passed a Jeep Grand Cherokee on the way out. Oh, and here's Dave about to pull this Willys with his Hatch:

First car owner + first Subaru owner says hello

Ya know, I've had a lot of cars that sat undriven for months and none attract as many Yellow Jackets as a Subaru. I won't touch my parts car without a can of raid in hand. :-\ -
OK, $25 at the hardware store later, I give you Fort SubieSafari v 1.0. If you're unfamiliar with my roof, here it is. Obviously ventilation wasn't the problem. It's attached only to the car; I could drive with the thing on if need be. Although it'd be hard to see where I was goin'. I utilized the 4" of allthread left from my spare-tire mount to connect the cross beam - it's 1.5 inch PVC with a coupling in the middle so it'll break down for storage. Plus, I had enough PVC left over to make a bong. The tailgate still opens, that was a must. And of course since it's a Subaru and has no pesky window frames, the doors still open too. Mmmm, cozy inside. The tarp sits 1' above the ragtop, so I get airflow AND shade. Anywho, there you have it. Still need a little tweaking, but it'll fly. I've got a 5 day roadtrip in Utah coming up this weekend, I'll post "action" pics later!

Not exactly. I'm fine sleeping in the car, what I really want is shade. Where I live there are no trees and typically no rain.

Waitaminute, if the three bolts are in, what do you need a sprocket wrench for?
-
I'm gonna build a canopy to attach to my car for camping. Anybody else built something along these lines? I'm thinking a 8x10 tarp attached to an 8' peice 2" of PVC that's set perpendicular to the car attached to my roofrack above the spare... the 10' side of the tarp will run to the hood and get bungied to the fr tow hooks/wheel wells. The rear of the tarp and the pvc pipe will be bungied to the rear wheel wells. The rack will allow the Safari Top to still open, so I'll get shade AND ventilation. It's basically so my doggie will be comfortable if he hasta stay in the car. I've seen tents that attach to the tailgate, but I want something that goes up and down quick, is cheap, and is anchored only to the car so i can set it up in parking lots if need be. Anyways, ideas?
-
Everything is fine, I had to use a stock scissor jack to get it up a few inches, then put the floor jack under it. It didn't have a y-pipe at the time, I was in the process of changing it out. I noticed upon further inspection that the drivers side mirror was collapsed foward. You can see it in the picture. That, combined with the empty bottle of Jagermeister on my kitchen floor, supports my theory that some drunkard fell into it.
-
No kidding, I couldn't get the floor jack under it!

I got off an overnight shift at 8 am today, and as I rode my bike back to the house I noticed the Safari Wagon was sitting a little funny... It's been on jackstands for a few days getting a bunch of random stuff fixed. Unfortunetly we had a big storm last night and the dirt got all mushy. Doh! Lotsa dunken folks hang out at my house late-night, I'm thinking somebody probably bumped into it. No big deal, but thought it was kinda funny and surreal in a I-haven't-slept-in-a-while kinda way. Good morning, I'm going to bed.

I made it to Salida and back on one tank... that's about 350 miles with several mountain passes, on 2-lane roads. So 27ish. It does worse on actual highways than backroads.

You can't lift a Subaru. That's crazy talk.
