  1. And this is precisely why our community here is the shi**. 'nuff said.
  2. SPFI MPFI or carb? Does anybody know if these cars have ignitors? Had a similar problem with my brother's 1st gen Impreza and it was the ignitor..
  3. Just to clarify, you're noting the smoke coming out of the tail-pipe? Does the car ever sit long enough for you to tell if it's leaking only while running?
  4. Don't worry. A big dog would take care of your cat problem too. =P Jk. Not partial to cats, I. haha
  5. If anybody needs the whole FSM manual I gots it. Just throwin that out there.
  6. Yeah, desperate times call for desperate measures lol, the car was needed every day without fail, and money was super tight so no way to get a garage to do it quick (not that I would trust one to do so anyway). it took a couple of months until the gf/s semester ended at school before I could take the car off the road and tear into it. For this reason though, I can assure you that driving with a T.O.D. will not do anything harmful to your engine except hurt economy/performance. It will also make people look at you when you drive by 99 percent of the time. and occasionally they will even inform you that it sounds like your car is running with no oil, which is when you get to tell them that you heard that running a car with no oil makes it last longer and smile and drive away
  7. Yeah, pretty sure whenever an alternator goes, the voltage regulator is usually the culprit. even without the voltmeter, you'd have known eventually that it was your alternator when it finally just bit the dust and your car dies 20 minutes later after the battery drains. haha. Old parts go, just the nature of the beast.
  8. Thanks for clearing that up. I'm going to do that same check on mine to see if it's the valve or the heater core itself. Where exactly under the dash is the heater core located, I'm going to assume it's passenger side footwell. I've ripped out the glovebox in the loyale once before (I forget why actually lol) and remember seeing that that is where the blower fan is located if I'm not mistaken. Is it a real P.I.T.A to get to it? I'd like to flush out the core...
  9. would totally trade my gl for that if it was 4wd...and if I lived closer lol. I'd LOVE to get a hatchie.
  10. Ya, get yourself some jackstands and get both front tires up in the air take both wheels off and then use the other side for reference on the side you are working on. Pay attention to what you're doing. Don't get excited and rush. I used to do that when I first started wrenching and all that does is lead you to mistakes that make you have to go back over things again anyway, so patience is key and pays well in the end.
  11. Could you guys elaborate on that flapper and those hoses you blew out? Ben exhibits the same symptoms. His heat sucks.
  12. If you've got some tools, I agree with everybody, just jump in and start tearing it apart. If you haven't got any tools, take 40 bucks, go to sears and get a 50 piece craftsman tool set, and THEN start tearing into it! What have you got to lose? You've also got everybody here that's chimed in's support too if you hit a dead end.
  13. Type of Wrenching: Shadetree, because I guess that means not professionally lol. I've loved cars for as long as I can remember, and was always out in the cold helping my brother whenever he was working on his 65 mustang when I was 4, 5, 6 years old. I want to get into it professionally and hope to go to some type of school to get certs and all that jazz. How long doing it: Only been really tearing into cars the past 2 or 3 years. Before that it was all minor stuff, oil change, tune up, simple stuff like that. I worked professionally doing light work, tires, oil and tune up when I was 19. 24 now and starting to work my way into the good stuff. Need to go to school though... Other skills: Low voltage, telecom, computer repair, and all around if it can be taken apart or analyzed, I will do it, and put 99 percent of it back together
  14. Grab one from another vehicle and swap it in just to see how it performs. And vice versa for your autozone alt. Throw it in another vehicle.
  15. whoops, somehow missed the part about him trying out a replacement alt. About the Autozone alternators though, I've honestly never had a problem with them. However, I'm sure different seaboards of the states get different results in terms of aftermarket parts from such places, so so may be the case out by you guys with the build quality, but I personally have never had an issue. Axles on the other hand....
  16. Is seafoam really all I hear it's cracked up to be? I've been debating using it, as I've heard good, and bad things.
  17. If you're serious into the cameras, for a good 3 - 400 bucks you can set up a digital watchdog system. I used to set them up previously. One or two cameras, a DVR in your garage, and an internet connection and you can view your cameras from any internet capable device (PC, smart phone, etc). You can even set it up for motion detection in your garage and it will alert you via text message if something is moving. Check out ebay.
  18. Surprised nobody else jumped in here to offer assistance, but glad to hear that you managed to somehow take care of it yourself. Persistence is key with these cars lol
  19. Alright, that's what I figured, if the EGR valve itself is still functioning properly, the only thing left is the solenoid, which may or may not be some disconnected/ fouled wires. I gotta get my hands on an ohmmeter. Thanks for reassuring me on that though. By the way, I found this page http://doc.angaar.ee/subaru/8797CH04_13-1.html that was pretty useful. Might have some other good stuff too.
