Questions, You Guys Must Be Tires Of Me!
SubaSkeet replied to Vegablade's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
couple things, most have been posted all over the board previously: -shift at higher rpms for most power, many subarus are still comfortable at 5000-5600 rpms. -the larger the tires, the less power you will get out of the engine. same goes for wheels. The added weight bogs it down quite a bit. -tune ups seem to boost the overall performance of the car, even if it is slight. if you havent done this, and dont know the last time it was performed, i recommend having it done. -i, being a loyale owner as well, realize that this car isnt technically made for heavy duty off road, so the options on what to do to keep economy and add power are somewhat limited to what a lot of the motorheads on this site do to their gls, brats, and rx's. they have d/r 4wd, while we are stuck with pushbutton high. nevertheless i have gone places i never thought i could, and on bald tires to boot. -an air intake (for instance, a hood scoop) would be fun to look at on the hood of a car with 90 horsepower, and might boost it up a little as well. if you want to rip up the hood then go for it, but keep in mind that you cant really fix what you've cut into. i have plans to do the same to my loyale since theres a fatty golf ball indention in it. -you can make it look nice just by doing little things: roof rack, grill guard, paint scheme, floodlights (recommended for night-roading), decals from mick (subliminal advertising added here), etc. -disregard that last note, i just realized you said power, not spiffiness. ill keep it in there just in case you wanted tips, eh. -redoing the exhaust system's a good idea for power. 2" pipe instead of the stock 1-7/8" would yield some extra oomph. just what i can think of off the top of my head, more to come from smarter people than me. good luck, skeet -
Is there anyone in the southwest area (AZ, NV, CA, UT) that would like to share a weekend with fellow subaru owners and off roaders? We could meet wherever there was dirt roads and wherever people would want to go. Feel free to post yay or nay to this idea. I'm just looking for some way to meet some of the boardmembers down south, since the north end of the country seems to be quite covered with ants (er, members). thanks for your replies, should there be any. skeet

Clutch
SubaSkeet replied to Erudite's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
i noticed a little while ago that whenever i would push in the clutch a grinding sound would appear. now that noise has gotten a lot more so, and now occurs while just driving along. does this have to do with the clutch, and what is causing the noise? -

why, yes it is. I'm amazed at how many people even know what Homestar Runner is. -

Roof Racks: The who, what, and why
SubaSkeet replied to SubaSkeet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i'd be interested if you were more local. wanna take a roadtrip? i have not the time/money/patience/energy for travelling long distances right now, and i want one before i go up to wash. area next summer. sorry, unless theres some way we can work this out easier. -
As mentioned above, this is about roof racks. For instance, one that i would want to put on my car. ive checked out yakima's, and they have exactly what i need: basic stuff with capabilities for a bike on the top. unfortunately, the deal was priced at $320 friggin kahunas! there's gotta be a cheaper way to do this. just one bike on my roof is all i need, nothing more, for now anyway. any suggestions? i know a lot of you have custom stuff, which i wouldnt mind, considering it would be cheaper than the yakimas by a lot. thanks, skeet

Clutch
SubaSkeet replied to Erudite's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
prolly been stated somewhere on the board before, but to save me the trouble of searching thru every single one in an effort to find my question, how hard is it for someone who doesnt know too much about cars to replace? what tools, how much money for a new clutch, and how long would it take? thanks, skeet -

dang, wish i was closer or id've come. tell me, someone, whats it like? i know for a fact that my car couldnt go thru the most of the damage that wcss deals, so if i came next year would i be able to roll in someone elses car, or would i have to stand on the sidelines? im planning a big trip to washington to show off my subie to a bunch of friends in that area, and to visit with some board members should they want to see me. is there a plan on when next year's meet will be? any info would be great, thanks. looks like it was a blast. -
holy freakin crap, and all this time i didnt read this thread because i thought it was about in-depth car stuff. where did it go wrong?!?!? j/k, i like nearly pointless threads sometimes, its the only place i can post and not sound like an idiot... wait, that just failed. my bad.

Ahh gotta love those Cops...
SubaSkeet replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
with my luck if i was in your position the cops wouldve blamed it on me, or found something wrong with my car (such as the holes in the exhaust, now) to turn the blame. glad the car's okay. -
Just got a free 86 GL-10 Wagon!
SubaSkeet replied to SubaruRichie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Don't go for the autos, since they suck. completely. i mean, you can if you want, but if you wanna off road at all its definitely manual all the way. you can post what you want in the marketplace board, either way. there are tons of subageeks up in northern west coast so youre probably covered in the tranny dept. you can even get help from them to put it in, im sure. good luck, skeet -
should not be hard at all. make sure you check how much freon you put in after its converted... with r134 should not be more than 2 bottles. it would help to check other sites for a step-by-step analysis. heres one, although its a range rover site: http://www.rangerovers.net/rrupgrades/ac134a.htm good luck! skeet

my friends truck has a bad starter, or so he says. how do they work? i know they turn the engine flywheel, but is there some place i can find this type of info out other than howstuffworks.com? thanks, although this is probably the wrong place to post this. -
Feel free to post your own stories on here, folks. and pics, while were at it. ready...GO!

gosh, that almost happened to me this morning as well. I swear, all SUVs should be taken off the road. they are unsafe and from what i see the cause of most accidents not involving alcohol. almost every crash i see here involves a stupid soccermomtank. SUV - Subaru-unearthing vehicles is more like it.
