  1. Hold on here. Youve HAD this problem for awhile and since you say these codes are normal i assume youve HAD these codes.. 102 is a MAF sensor code. 507 is an idle control code. 303 is the misfire code and 420 is a cat. Converter. This was fried due to your misfire. A maf can cause alot of funky readings including lean/rich conditions, misfires, stumble, loss of power and sometimes no starts. Id check the maf first before i do anything. It will cause it to idle eratic throwing a 507, misfire leading to 303 and that 303 caused ur 420
  2. fuel pumps are easy to change on this car too. When it starts back up after dying does it have an extended crank time? if it fires right up i wouldnt suspect fuel for one main reason. If it dies due to lack of fuel it means your lines are empty since it loses all the pressure. The 1-second run time the fuel pump has when you turn the key isnt enough to re-pressurize the entire fuel system. It takes about 5 second crank time to fill the lines back up. That being said if it starts right back up i'd look at an intermittent cmp/ckp or coil pack. It isnt common but it fits the description. But like was said before having a fuel pressure gauge in line never hurts to diag before spending money on ignition and you can splice it into your lines at the pump and run it to the front of the car so you can monitor it while driving without having a line running from under the hood. Also the fact that moisture in the air seems to make it worse leads me to believe that you have a failing coil pack. Happened to me on my old buick 3800.
  3. yeah that one is an auto 98 so most likely 2.5 dohc. Seeing as i know the history on my engine and i've replaced all it's seals i'm gona go with 5-speed swap and keep the car i've got. It's reliable enough despite the trans issues.
  4. Well as i said this is my daily and im a little low on cash. I kinda need it mobile yesterday if you know what i mean. For $100 me and my brother can go to the yard and pull everything I need to do the swap then spend $200 on a clutch kit. If i have to pull the rear diff and drop to 3.9s then so be it. Economical works for me, the car already got 28 with the auto. I suspect 30s with a lighter m/t and lower gears. I'd pay over 300 buying a trans through other non u-pull it yards even with my discount through my shop buying it.
  5. This being my daily after going through 2 transmissions ill take what i can get. Theres no outback or legacy gt available at least none 5 speed atm. Looks like i may have to pull the rear diff with a legacy. I have a bad memory but i think the impreza m/t i saw was awd. If so ill use that. Make sure ive got my list of parts riight Trans awd with mounts Speedo cable Shift cable Pedals brake and clutch Shifter and shift rod Drive shaft? Cv shafts? Starter? Ecu? If its a impreza 2.2
  6. will pedals shifter etc from leggie work in the impreza? or should i focus on getting all those parts from the impreza? I've got access to 2 2wd m/t impreza's and an awd m/t leggie. The 4th car i have access to i cant remember if it's 2wd or awd but it's an impreza. same color as mine too ironically lol
  7. I think im set on doing the 5 speed swap in my 95 impreza. Im curious what models i can get the. M/t awd from. Ive heard m/t awd wasnt used til later 90s since all subarus became awd in 97. No more 2wd option. And if i get a leggie trans i have to get the rear diff to match due to gear ratios correct? Im not sure if they made a 1.8 awd manual but if so will it fit my 2.2?
  8. I never took the clip out. I left the sleeve on the converter and swapped it all over into my new trans. Did they do 2.5 sohc in those outbacks? Those arent as bad correct? Also 95legacy i remember u did a big review on your swap awhile back. It seems easy since ive already got awd and everything. How heavy was the m/t? I know 2 ppl can barely lift an auto. I assume its lighter. That would seriously cut down on vehicle weight. Also theres a junkyard near here thats $50 for whatever you can carry across the scale so if i fill a bag with parts and strap the trans around my shoulder and carry it at my weist thats a $50 swap minus price of a clutch kit. I know where a 1.8 impreza m/t is at the junkyard but cant remember if its awd. I think its 94 so probably isnt. Next to that is a early 90s leggy 2.2 awd 5 speed. Wont work will it? Or what if i was to take the diff too. Im a junkyard dog subarus are awesome since so many parts interchange.
  9. My new trans didnt have a converter. I took my old one out and put in this trans. It took me an hour to get it all lined up so i could bolt it in. I didnt force it just took forever rotating and pushing til all the splines lined up i assume. I swapped the metal sleeve over too since i couldnt get the snap ring out of the converter. I know it raised hell the first time i started it up. Hasnt done as bad since.
  10. Ive considered it but finding a 5 speed awd impreza pre 99 is tough in this area. And the leggie has different rear end gears so i cant use that one. However i talked to the wife and i forgot a good friend of her family owns an independent transmission shop. Her dad used to work there and he was damn good at rebuilding automatics before he passed. Sucks all his special tools for overhaul are gone. I can do it if i had the parts and special presses and pliars to take it apart. Im gona see how much itll cost to overhaul my old one before i look into cuttin and swapping in tbe 5 speed. If i can swap in a rebuilt auto and keep it stock id rather do that. Worst case ive considered buying a 98 leggie outback. A local car lot has one. Its got 130k just like my car and its in good shape.
  11. Ive seen 97 impreza outbacks with power windows and locks and found a unit under the dash that said 'keyless' also ive found a 95 same color as mine with power windows. Took the fuel door and grille from it. Checked the labels. It was 95
  12. my 95 came with those. Theyre good for filling up a corner in your tool box
  13. I finally replaced my trans in my 95 impreza 2.2. My old one had no reverse, awd was stuck and first was on it's way out. I think it was a bad idea to put this one in my car.. It was fine in the car i drove that i took it out of but Now this one has a severe chatter from the trans like its tearing itself apart. It also has some slippage in first intermittently kinda feels like torque bind but it happens when giong straight. It also slips if you put any load on it. seems like air bubbles in the lines. It's worst when first starting up then it gets quiet after a few seconds. During that time the oil temp light flashes. I've read about issues with the strainer o-ring. I've had it back out and it seems to be lined up right. It got better after I got the oil level correct but still slips and whines/chatters like crazy. Any Ideas? Kinda makes me wonder if anyone knows of any remaining good transmission rebuilding shops.
  14. I dont think they did in the imprezas. In the outback version i know they did but that started in 96 or 97. Ive looked at swapping in power windows and door locks into my 95. I think the lx had those 2 major options up on the L model which mine is.
  15. Yep happened to my 95 too. It was melted when i bought the car at 130k. Seems common. I put a oem one in at $95. Theyre pretty easy to change or mine was and i have 0 knock now even under heavy loads. My car has obd2 also. Its mandatory for all 96 and newer vehicles but some companies put them in as early as 93 to test them and make sure they functioned properly by the mandated date in 96.
  16. Not always. Just because the light is off the ecm will store a "history" code until it reaches its 40 key cycles then deletes the code. Since obd2 codes are 2 trip logic the problem must be stored. If it happens 2x within 40 ignition cycles it turns the light on. It will turn the light off as it sees fit depending on whether its transmission related or emissions related.
  17. I recently bought a 1 owner 95 model with 129k and im new to subys and this forum also but im loving it so far. When i bought mine it had a bad water pump due to having water in the block. Since urs is maintained u shouldnt have a problem there. Just keep the coolant mixture right. Once i fixed that its been a great car. If its automatic id be careful with the trans. Ive seen alot of tranny issues. More from legacys than imprezas. Mostly awd clutches from wear or ppl towing them with rear wheels on the ground. I should be putting a new trans in mine this weekend to fix awd clutches, no reverse and weak 1st. But honestly i havent seen big issues so far especially if its been maintained by the dealer. Most issues that come up are from previous owners dogging it out or not maintaining it. Take care of it and itll easily outlast that 350 and that civic.
  18. they dont use different final drives between models tho right? Since my spare trans came from a early 90s impreza 2-door awd and mine's a more base model 4-door
  19. Did you swap the entire box? the MAFs between the 2 are probably different P/Ns seeing as theyre for 2 different vehicles with different weights, ECMs, etc
  20. If its front main you may as well do a timing set and itll come with. Theyre easy to change. Plus the oil will contaminate the belt. Rear one is a bit more difficult.
  21. its a generic guide for automotive shops use. Ive seen it be wrong a time or 2 but compared to what ive seen with my own eyes and compared to what it's saying i'd be willing to put money on it that i cant put more than 13 gallons in my impreza without doing anything crazy of corse lol Verified sources: All listed as 13.2 gal or 50.0 L http://www.edmunds.com/subaru/impreza/1995/features-specs.html http://www.autobuyguide.com/1995/12-aut/subaru/impreza/specifications/index.html http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/autos/carcomparator.action?carsToCompare.id=3493&pid=specs&trimsToCompare.id=26460 That's just 3. Everything i've found for the 95 impreza L 2.2L automatic AWD says 13.2 gallon / 50.0 Liter tank You asked before about it being a loyale. Im not quite sure. I know that's what subaru intended to call them before their release in 93 and my car's production is 10/94 which is within the first 2 years but it was the first year of the 2.2L
  22. Shopkey says 13.2 gallons. which is 50.0L which is what i found on other car review sites since subaru labels it by Liters (or Litres as it says on my tail assy "2.2 Litre") not gallons. Seeing as my tank was empty when I bought the car and i verified this with my sending unit/pump out because my gauge was inop and i was doing testing. I put a 5 gallon container of gas in it and almost had 1/2 tank (as viewed through sending unit holes not gauge) it makes more sense. Seeing as my tank rusted prior to me getting it im not going to risk running it to E and clog up my pump and fuel system to pull the sending unit back out and check it. I'd love to have a 15 gallon tank. That way i could make it to work and back a 5 day week on a tank of gas instead of 4 days. I found a plastic tank (or internally plastic lined) in a laet 90s outback which is where i got my sending unit/pump assy's from. Maybe it will fit and it'll be larger?
  23. Idk but my impreza only holds 12 gallons. Just filled up this morning with 1/4 tank left and i put 9 gallons in and ive had the sending unit out before so i know its right. 12 sounds right for such a small car and with the hump for awd it makes it smaller. Also its a J vin japanese produced car if that makes a difference.
