Very basic Question concerning checking the Dip Stick
Suzam replied to Petersubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf you want an accurate reading pull out the dipstick and give any oil that traveled up the tube with it time to go back down. Wait longer for cold than warm.

legacy lsi question
Suzam replied to Jellef's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI had a 95 L series with 160k and no major problems, until an accident forced retirement. I was aiming on 200k before I was considering replacing it. What to look for is tourque binding and mismatched tires. Make sure the is NO fuse in the FWD socket under the hood. Check for the usual fluid leaks underneath. 120k service which includes a timing belt is due. There will most likely be some cam seals leaking too.

Trailer Towing
Suzam replied to Phillip's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDoes anyone know if the reason North American vs. other countries in towing capacity rating difference is most likely from national and federal requirements and mandates? The physical construction of the basic Subaru framework and undercarriage should be the same, I would think, no matter if it's build in the US or Japan. So I'm guessing it's a NHTSA thing as far as how much gross weight with or without trailer braking? I tow a utility trailer rated at 995 lbs. every so often and I know I've had over 1,000 lbs in it and the handling changes greatly with more gross weight.

Looked at an 02 Ouback today!
Suzam replied to 3Pin's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX02 would tend have an external leak not an internal. If it did have a HG problem, coolant would leak out between the block and head. If Subaru put in the coolant additive if should be covered for 100k, I can't remember if there is a time limit though.

smashed rear driver's door glass
Suzam replied to Legacy777's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI feel your pain... My daughter was in downtown Philly about 5-6 years ago and left her portable CD player (remember those?) on the console. Some smack-head broke the trianglular opera glass out on the rear quarter panel of our MY95 Legacy only to find out he couldn't reach the inside handle. Being the genius that he was, he just blasted out the passenger side window. Stolen walkman cd player & loose change = $25 2 pieces of glass replacement = $240 (+ time) Final cost of portable cd player = $265 (+ time)

What are driving lights?
Suzam replied to eryque's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDriving lights are focused beam aux lights used for forward illumination to a fixed distance. Fogs lights are dispersed at a close distance to the immediate front of the car, which reduces reflection in rain mist and fog.

97 Legacy Driver's Window goes too far up?
Suzam replied to Suzam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYep, I figure the confusing part out all by myself... So from the answers so far the "guides" as I call them that are on the top of the frame aren't what I'm looking for? I'll have to pull open the plastic sound proofing and look inside the door itself.

97 Legacy Driver's Window goes too far up?
Suzam replied to Suzam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThanks for the answers so far. grossgary, What is the "stopper" exactly? I see a pair of what I'd call guides at the top of the inner and outter doorframe, the outer ones have a clothlike patch on them and the inner ones look like white plastic. They oppose each other with the glass in between. The inner ones have bolt adjustments to make them closer/farther from the glass. Are these what you're calling a stop? Or are the stops inside the door itself and if so do they travel with the glass and it's slides or are the stationary? I could take the panel off again and take some pics if I have to.

97 Legacy Driver's Window goes too far up?
Suzam replied to Suzam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYeah I figured there must be a window stop of somekind, But I really couldn't find or identify it. Anyone know what I should be looking for?

97 Legacy Driver's Window goes too far up?
MY97 Legacy, the power window functions fine except at the end of traveling up it sort of shifts out a bit at the bottom makes a clunk noise and goes 1/4" past the front triangular seal (it's actually split the top a bit). I took off the door panel but didn't notice anything out of place (I'm no expert), the inner and outer guide pads seem to be in place but I noticed that on the outside of the glass there is a 1/2" wide faint scratch along the height of the window that aligns with the rear guides. Any ideas if this an adjustment problem?

99 Outback Limited Ed. - Is it Worth It?
Yeah, if the seller (private?) has the maintainence records they are worth their weight in gold. You'd know all the things that were done to the car. Eliminates guesswork and services that you do because you didn't have proof it was done prior to purchase. Check it for torque bind symptoms too (do a search on the board). It it is in exceptional shape then that's not a bad price. Sometimes if you wave $4600 to $4750 under the sellers nose, they bite on it.

question about new scooby purchase
Suzam replied to cls1000's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI think any Subaru dealer can call up the service records of your car if it was done at a dealer. Also you can sign up for http://www.mysubaru.com and possibly get some of the service history when you register as the new owner.

Passenger door mirror replacement
Suzam replied to Dave643's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou can check the part's number online and see what years it is listed for, but the 2000-2005 models may be the same.

How do I restore a foggy headlight?
Suzam replied to dariusbd's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI used wet 400 grit sand paper on one set then sprayed them LIGHTLY with clear acryilic spray. That lasted almost 3 years before I noticed a slight peal of the acrylic.

Shaky Rear View Mirror
Suzam replied to I)arkZrobe's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf you move the day/night lever to half way between does it tighten up? If it does you can remove the mirror form the windsheild and open up the back of the mirror and tighten the fork type thing that presses on the ball joint (2 screws). I've done it to a couple of them. One held fast, the other I have to redo about every 2 years.

Hesitation after fill up
Suzam replied to CougarSport's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDo you "top-off" the tank after the first click? If you do, you could be introducing gas into the vapor recycling tube that leads to the evaporator canister.

MY97 Legacy L Wagon to BUY???
Suzam replied to Suzam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI forgot I started this thread. I picked up the 97 Wagon for $3500. It's in exceptional shape otherwise I would have passed on it. It's a 1 owner garaged beauty. Clean engine compartment with no rusted nuts, bolts or mounting brakets under the hood. And I couldn't let the 2.2 pass. http://www.geocities.com/ss_aruba/golf_shots/BluWagoon.jpg I already replaced the windshield for $200 and will be putting new rear disk brake pads on soon. It's still listed on VEHIX.com: http://www.vehix.com/inventory/VehicleDetails.aspx?zip=19810&make=Subaru&model=Legacy&year=1997&inventoryid=770000008CF497 And Autotrader.com: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?rdpage=thumb&car_id=226289929&dealer_id=294911&car_year=1997&marketZipError=false&awsp=false&search_type=used&num_records=25&keywordsfyc=&make=SUB&transmission=&model=&distance=75&make2=&address=19810&default_sort=priceDESC&advanced=&certified=&max_mileage=&max_price=6000&sort_type=priceDESC&min_price=&body_code=0&end_year=1997&keywordsrep=&color=&start_year=1995&drive=&search_lang=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&engine=&fuel=&doors=&style_flag=1&cardist=12 I will miss the folding side view mirrors on the 95 though. I think will be putting the WRX wheels from the 95 on as well. http://www.geocities.com/ss_aruba/golf_shots/IMG_0096.jpg
