I'm like my brat : old and slow. Therefore I pay about $290 a year for insurance. Half a million on liability and uninsured autos; and full coverage on comprehensive (don't like paying for glass); roadside assistance, and medical. Not too bad.

My local cooper dealer has 15 sets of cooperstt tires in 14" x 205/75 and want to cut me a deal. First they said - $300 even installed and balanced. Then they said $240 same deal. Then they looked at the new tires I had on and said they'd give me some trade in on my current tires. They were making it really tough to walk away, but I have to wait to get my steelies from Austin to buy them. I don't want to put those on my alloys.

Ed and Rob, you're both getting a smoking deal. The only pugs we see here is the set or two we manage to get sent here from you guys, and we're thankfulto pay whatever the cost. With that said, though, it doesn't give you carte blanche to ram it to us now (especially now that we know what you guys pay for them).

Welcome to the board, and don't take offense if I bust out laughing as you are in the parts mecca for subarus. There are a bunch of pull-a-parts (junk yards) in WA state and too many commrades in your neck of the woods to even attempt to think about. You, my friend, are fortunate if you want to fix your Brat up by location alone. As far as body parts, with the exception of 1982 (which will fit, but the antenna is on the wrong side) all Brat body panels are interchangable on the gen 2's (1982-1987). Front fenders from sedans and wagons, I believe, will fit a brat also. There is a fender on e-bay right now. I'm sure before long you'll realize how lucky you are.

It's 2400 miles long, it can have frost heaves that'll cause you to drive 35 mph for long sections, there can be miles of road construction, ever have a 1,200 pound moose run in front of you doing 70 mph? There are some perils (breaking down in the middle of nowhere, especially in winter) but it is a spectacular trip. Heck, the upper Canadian Rockies are worththe trip alone. But right now, the cost of fuel makes the trip spendy.

It looks like theyhave a splined center, not a 4 X 140 bolt pattern.

It all depends on how much you want to trim the wheel wells, and how much you want to bog down the engine. Larger diameter tires require more clearance on the wheel wells and more power to turn over. Either way (14 or 15) you get into a selection of tire designs with more agressive tread.

This is talked about in the repair manual (USRM) but I'm unsure about it. It sounds like you have two options:1. lengthen the original, or2. put in one from the donor car and weld in a bracket to support it and the bearing with it. I'd love to be corrected so I know for sure as this is something I'm planning on doing in the fall.

Spray the lower half of the engine compartment with undercoating to guard against rust.

I second the JB Weld.

They are black hoses that fit over nozzles of different sizes around different places in the engine compartment.

PM Subaru Junkie or Shadow. They are the two "go to" guys for technical help.

Do a quick scan and see if there is a vacuum hose disconnected somewhere.
