Mr. Rguyver was very nice about explaining some other mods he did so maybe try asking him about the SPFI system on the EA-81. Bolting on the manifold etc should be easy. Switching the disty gear, the electronics, and the fuel system...that might be interesting but not that bad if you have time to putz. I'm the fool that put the SPFI intake on my EA81 and made the bolt-on Weber adapter plate to keep the carb level. I think it works good but I've spouted enough on that already. In retrospect I kinda wish I had gone SPFI...it just makes sense. Once you get the system working you might even be enlarge the opening in the manifold and go with a bigger throttle body. Didn't Chef Tim or someone stick a EA81 block into a SPFI Loyale? Surely someone has already done this. The intake fits on the block like it was made to, everything lines up perfectly. I used the SPFI EGR pipe and it fits sweet with no interferance and I have a functional EGR system. The heater pipes needed to be bent a bit to clear the oil filler neck (or something over there) but it was no big deal tweeking the pipes to fit. The biggest headache was a small coolant fitting on the thermostat housing. The fitting is in the way of the disty vac advance (for a EA81 disty.) I cut off the fitting and plugged the hole in the 'stat housing. Then I installed a new barb fitting in a new location. (It's for that coolant line that runs from the stat housing to the center of the block under the intake.) Other than these little items, the SPFI intake fits right onto the EA81 block.

Wow that's interesting reading and one hella Frankensteined Justy. I like the name too, since Leroy happens to be my middle name. The page wouldn't load at all in my older version of Netscape but came up fine in IE.

Rumors of Huge Soobie meet..

Illinois in July, sounds lovely. -
Looks like you did the turbo style exhaust huh? I say that because I see a crossover pipe laying on the floor in that last photo. No more busted y-pipes for Jared. How did John do the strut tops? Are they similar to what he did on the Beast or a new design? So how do you like driving it now with the added elevation and gears?

Nice job of forging ahead with the project and doing the previously undone. As for making the adapter plate, do you have access to a mill or are you just roughing it with a bandsaw or something? Thanks!

Just something to mull over....

I searched Switchboard for "Jackman" in California and one result was this: Jackman Machining 1693 Commerce St Corona, CA ZipCode Phone: (909) 735-1317 Business Types: Repair Shops & Related Services, Machine Shops A Google search gave results that suggest Jackman made or makes beadlock wheels for offroad and maybe buggy parts. -
SVX engine in an EA81 hatch...?
Mike W replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The SVX enginge swap has already been done. Naturally it was by one of those gonzo Aussi offroad racers. He put it into a very cool Gen 2 Brat with remote reservoir shocks, cage etc. I'm pretty sure he kept it mated to the auto tranny and raced it that way. There should still be pics around if you peruse the BYB website. -
Made it back from Reiters Pit... barely...

Hey I've been wondering how it was. I've heard of fly by wire throttle control but never fly-by-neon-string in the snow. Sounds like it made for interesting time. So did Jared make it with his Little Roo on growth hormones? Bring on the photos, I want to what I missed out on! -
Hey no bragging Mick! Sigh... Well ok, congratulations I guess. I paid $50 more for mine on ebay. Now I just need to score a welder so I can build hitch recievers and a multimount thing for the winch.

Actually I shouldn't have said bushings since a normal stock carb doesn't have pivot bushings. The choke and throttle plates normally pivot on the aluminum casting itself but as they wear with age, slop develops between the shaft and the holes in the casting. If you grab the choke or throttle plates you can tell how much slop there is. When the slop gets too bad and the hole is all egg shaped, shops will line ream the holes and install bushings into the oversized holes. A couple years ago I bought a lot of 8 carbs on ebay two of them had major slop in throttle pivots. This condition makes it virtually impossible to tune the carb. They could have been fixed with bushings but too much hassle for me so I canibalized them for parts instead.

"Nervous" or stoked and raring to go? Counting the minutes sounds more like stoked. I'm plenty stoked myself but it's looking more and more like I won't be able to go (expletive deleted.) But my car is ready so if I can make an escape you bet I'll be there. I've been wondering how much snow is on the ground out there but couldn't find any info about Goldbar. The closest live webcam and weather info I could find is for Baring. That's a bit east and probably 500 feet or so higher in elevation but should give a decent indication of what things are like. http://www.skycabins.com/currentweather.htm

Did we ever get to see pictures of this thing? If not, we need to and you'll probably get some possitive feedback to compensate for what you're $%^&* neighbor did. Anyway, this may not be much help but there's some info on the Offorad Subaru Club of Queensland website about putting an EJ22 engine into a ea82 style car. Supposedly he used the EJ gearbox and put the EA82 style guts into it. Here's the link: http://www.subaclub.com/TechTalk/NewEngine.htm For more info you might try asking on the BYB message board.

On my Hatchback I have the plastic shield attached on the outboard side with a wire tie and the inboard mount is held in place by my throttle return spring. Any chance there's slop in the choke pivot bushings allowing air to leak past when the choke is on? I've also had cold starting grumpyness caused by a minor vacuume leak and also a coil suffering from old age. When it was the coil, it ran like crap for ten minutes or so then smoothed out, apparently when the coil itself warmed up.

washington state ORV trail closures
Mike W replied to Rooinater's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There's three (or more) areas near Black Diamond that have fun trails to play on. Good for a half day or so of fun. I wouldn't mind going down there again if any of yous are interested. A couple years ago I found some trails and stuff out east of Duval off the Stossle Creek road. No telling what it's like these days but might be fun to explore. -
washington state ORV trail closures
Mike W replied to Rooinater's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Jared, I just emailed you an update on the Miller River Trail (since you have it listed on the Stomper trail page.) Basically what I said about it is that the Forest Service lists it as closed and there's a major tank trap at the trailhead so the trail hasn't been getting used. But technically it might be still open and last Sept I made it around the gate but found the trail to be serious so parked it and walked. In a nutshell, it's a cool trail and 2/3 of it is easy. The other 1/3 is good for testing Subarubicon rigs. Hope we can do it next June or July when the snow melts. -
How white is Subaru white?
Mike W replied to viceversa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would bet it's Liberty White, the same paint as on RX Coupes. I don't have the paint code but you should be able to find it at http://www.duplicolor.com/ and order it from your local parts store that sells Duplicolor. -
There's a couple write-ups of the proceedure on the Ultimate Repair Manual. Here's one of them: http://usmb.net/repair/?CurrentDirectory=FOLDER_3f35c591bdc2e0.78531895/&FileType=Article&File=ARTICLE_3f3c648969ca18.53856943.art

I was joking but I see how right you are. Guess I'll bring the guage to work and compare it to the certified aerospace gauge. My guage was expensive in it's day therefor I assumed...and I should know by now that's a dirty word in the QC dept. Sorry I didn't mean to get this off topic so bad.
-
Dang Tex, hope it's not as bad as it sounds. Sorry I can't help but I'll burn some incense on the Subaru alter and hold out hope it's just a stuck t-stat and condensation in the oil.

Pneumatic suspension maintenance?

Thanks for the info RedLance, that's something I've been wondering about for a while now. Good to hear the engineers were thinking. -
Another Goofy Idea--Storage in Spare Tire Area
Mike W replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How much higher would the hood need to be to clear the big tire anyway? I was thinking if it only took an inch or so, then maybe the rear of the hood could be jacked up where it connects to the hinges (you know like guys do with the rear lid on bugs to get cool air.) If that worked and didn't look totally stupid, some sheetmetal could be added around the sides to fill the gaps. Just another goofy idea... -
GD, I'm glad you know my car better than me. I'm actaully quite happy with my 38 on stock EA81 heads. If you'd like to pay to dyno it to prove that it sucks, hey you're most welcome to do so. Oh yeah and it likes 2.5 psi but I guess that's impossible so maybe my guage needs re-calibration.

I bet the jet drive supplies the water for cooling the engine. The sand trap listed on the parts page must filter out some of the crud. But it still seems like there must be some nasty looking stuff flowing through those expensive engines. I got to looking for pics too and found these crash sequences: http://www.sprintboat.org/modules/xoopsgallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=wrecks&page=1 http://www.lewisriver.com/woodland/sprintboats/2003/

I've wondered if anyone ever carbed an EJ. Nice looking conversion. Those sprint boats are sick! Like rally in water but on land if you miss the turn. I just checked the schedule and it looks like Speed will be airing some races. http://www.speedtv.com/schedule/index.php?m=&d=&week=&ts=&wholeMonth=10&subcat=&program=uim&usecal=no&startMonday=
