  1. If the auto manufacturers were required to post their FSMs online, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. But that'll never happen. It's just one of my pet peves.
  2. Man that sucks Corky. I use a digital torque wrench at work and it's nice being able switch units of measure. Problem is that it's a Proto wrench and we can't get repair parts for it anymore even though it's only four years old. I had a similar problem doing heads on a Ford. The Haynes book didn't tell me to replace the bolts and it turned out they're the one-time-use variety (they stretch.) So just as I'm approaching the target torque value on the last bolt...snap! Kinda sucks taking it all apart and buying another new headgasket.
  3. Wow, that sure looks like a labor of love. There ought to be a Lazarus award or medal of honor for those who save Subarus from cancerous death.
  4. That thing really does look pretty in blue. Those bullbars, they're aluminum right? Any idea how much the weigh? I also like that sedan in this pic here: http://community.webshots.com/photo/121010716/121011278PxOyVU Nice work!
  5. Here's a link with info on coverting a stock A/C pump. http://home.kendra.com/xjdlgill/converti.htm And here's a list of links to pages with York type on board air conversions. http://www.jeepsonly.com/How_Tos/On_Board_Air/ I couldn't find any more info on that small lightweight self-oiling pump found on Corollas. I'll try to ask the guy I work with which years it came on. He uses a pump like that on his trail rig to air up 38" tires, power tools, lockers etc and yet his reservoir is only a small fire extinguisher bottle that can't hold more than a gallon or so. Nicest OBA system I've ever seen, but then his whole rig is super cool because he's a hella tool maker and machinist by trade.
  6. :lol:Everyone's jonesing for a plasma cutter! Even if you're all set up to build it yourself I say just buy the kit from PK and slap it in and start having fun! Instant gratification is good and there's no shame in buying an affordable kit that's already proven and works sweet. Besides there's lots of other stuff like bumpers, skid plate, etc. that you can fab. Might as well post pics so we can get on with drooling over that plasma cutter.
  7. Some Toyota Corollas also had a small and light weight self oiled A/C compressor that rockcrawlers are using for on-board air.
  8. Yeah SK as far as I know, Datsun 510 diffs are the same unit we have on our old Subes. I'm not sure just offhand what ratio they came with. Sorry for spewing out all the irrelevant info, I thought was what Bigjim was asking about.
  9. The 80/100 H4 bulbs definitely help. I bought the Eagle Eye brand lamps from JCWhitney for $14/each. They're good but the newer Pilot brand with parabolic style reflector seem to put out a nicer beam. They're $40/pair and probably worth it.
  10. Hi Mick. A month or so ago I was experimenting with the aiming of my roof mounted pencil beams. On straight roads I like having them aimed way out there but on windy roads the two super bright spots shining off into the woods can be blinding and actually make it harder to see. I tried aiming them down so they were shining more where my headlights aim and that didn't help. It just dialated my pupils and made it harder to see around corners. My driving lights weren't working that night and I really missed them since they do a good job of lighting up the sides of the road where the bambis lurk. I'd say if it's do-able, add tons of lights like on rally cars. Or just add one set of good driving lights. Or add a set of dual beam lights (fog and driving in one housing.) Anything would be better than slamming another bambi. Have you already converted the headlights to H4s? Another year or so and HID conversions might even be affordable.
  11. Thanks for the pics! Must have been a great time. I bet there'll be a lot more old school representation at the NASIOC meets. Thanks for the motivation!
  12. Here's a pic of a R200 from a 240z. They're used in a number of other Nissans and Infinity. Big heavy suckers yes, but they're stout. There's lots of info on the net, try searching for "R180" "R200a Nissan" and "R200 Nissan".
  13. Given that 510s had open diffs I can't imagine why we'd want to use a datsun diff. Subaru Brat is apparently going with R180 diffs for his beast. That diff has bigger stub axles and I belive you can either use Nissan axles or Subaru STI axles with it. If you were to use unmodified STI axles it would require STI or SVX wheelbearings to accomodate the big outboard stub axle. I think Subaru Brat was going to splice the inboard STI axle onto beefed up EA81 outboard axle stubs. The R200a diff weighs 26lbs more than our R160 but it's supposedly bombproof up to 300+hp and 31" wheels with lockers. It looks basically like our R160 but it's bigger and burlier. The shorter body R200 can supposedly use the same clutch type LSD or ARB air locker as the R200a but might weigh a few pounds less due to the shorter body. Both of the R200 diffs would require custom mounting. Various ratios are available but I think Pathfinders had the lowest.
  14. Good to hear you've been getting to work on Leroy. Can't wait to see more pics and functional testing. Drivetrain is good to go then eh?
  15. Boy that'd be funny if the swap worked. Can't believe no one has tried it yet and that makes me skeptical. Can't wait to hear the results.
  16. So how is the Rally Justy coming along anyway? Roadworthy yet?
  17. Totally pornographic image! Oh my gosh I'm so offended! Please make those naughty young ladies cover their hair that's obscene too! Where's the soap, I need to wash the sin from my eyes. Fer chis sake... Are we living in Afghanistan or is it Bushistan? Media censorship is getting a bit out of hand these days. Calebz, that would have been cool if the girlies wanted to go for a ride in your pimped out wagon. You roll off with them and all the WRX guys standing there jelous.
  18. What are you doing to get it so hot all this is needed? Flogging it on the track all day or preparing for Paris-Dakar? Sorry not trying to be a wongleflute, just curious why a good radiator isn't cutting it.
  19. Ah yes R180, I was guessing that's what you meant. Those tires are pretty big. How about kicking it up another notch to the R200 or R200a? Then you could use ARB air lockers or Calmini clutch style LSD.
  20. R280 diffs? I'm not familiar with those. Are they on newer Nissans or something?
  21. What kind of diffs, axles, hubs etc are going to drive those big meats?
  22. For whatever it's worth, I had a similar failure with a chrome Pertronix Flamethrower coil. I replaced it with a Super Coil and that's been great. I also cleaned my grounds btw.
  23. From what I've seen in all the catalogs etc, the rolling load rating seems to refer more to winching a vehicle up onto a trailer. That doesn't help much though, since we don't know how steep the ramp is. I mean like ramp trucks can be fairly steep whereas a car trailer isn't much at all. And who knows how steep a given boat launch might be. On my hatchback I have a 1500lb Superwinch that was a dealer option on a '79 Brat. It's a good little winch for being so old. Even without a snatchblock (pulley) I've been able to pull the front of my car sideways in soft soil and also one time it got me off a burm I was high centered on. It was not able to pull me up a very steep and rock strewn trail even with me driving in 2wd mode. And that's not the only time it was just too dang wimpy. Now I'm upgrading to a 4500ld Superwinch. Hope that helps.
  24. Are Trashwagons guaranteed to pickup trashy women? If so, sign me up.
  25. I was surfing the AuSubaru board and spotted this: http://community.webshots.com/photo/121005339/121006838RQbqea Glad I'm not a kangaroo in front of that bumper.
